A PC optimization tool is optional—not a necessary fix for every slow computer. Before installing one, identify what is actually slowing the PC, try the relevant Windows controls, and verify that any third-party tool comes from a trusted source, explains its changes, and offers a benefit you can measure. Avoid tools that use alarming claims or ask you to weaken security protections.
What can a PC optimization tool do—and what can’t it do?
“PC optimizer” can mean different things: a utility might help manage startup apps, clear selected files, or offer other maintenance features. Those tasks may be convenient, but a scan result or a large count of items to “fix” does not by itself show that your computer will run faster.
Microsoft lists limited storage, too many startup apps, outdated software, and hardware that no longer meets current needs among possible causes of a slow PC. Several causes can contribute at once, so work from the symptom rather than assuming a one-click cleanup will solve it. If the underlying constraint is old hardware, software cleanup may not make a significant difference. Microsoft’s Windows performance guide describes these causes and troubleshooting options.
What should you try before installing one?
Use Windows’ own controls first. Choose steps that match the problem, and check whether the same symptom improves afterward.

- Low free storage: Review storage use and remove files you no longer need using Windows storage settings or a built-in cleanup option.
- Slow startup: Open Task Manager, select Startup apps, and review which apps launch when you sign in. Disable only apps you recognize and do not need at startup; an app may still be available to open manually.
- Sluggishness during use: Close apps and browser tabs you are not using, then restart the PC if it has been running for a long time.
- Outdated software: Check for Windows and eligible driver updates through the appropriate Windows update controls. Keep your browser and other apps updated, too.
- Persistent slowdown: Consider whether the PC’s hardware can meet what you now ask of it. Cleanup cannot remove a hardware limit.
Microsoft also points to Microsoft PC Manager for storage cleanup and startup management. Availability and features may vary, so check the current Microsoft source for your Windows version. The performance guide notes that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025; after that date, Microsoft says Windows 10 no longer receives free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes.
How can you assess startup impact in Task Manager?
Task Manager gives startup apps an impact label based on CPU time and disk input/output during startup. Microsoft Learn’s published criteria are useful for deciding which entries deserve attention; they are not a measurement of how much a particular optimizer will improve performance.

- System optimization - Optimize your PC easily with our 1-click optimization tool and other automatized processes
- No more crashes - Fixes annoying errors and crashes
- Speed up - Faster application launches with enhanced Live Tuner
- Clean Windows - Brand new cleaner profiles with support for the latest Windows and browser versions
- Windows 11 - Multiple new Windows 11 tweaks for taskbar, Explorer and more
| Task Manager label | Microsoft’s stated criteria |
|---|---|
| High | More than 1 second of CPU time or more than 3 MB of disk I/O |
| Medium | 300 ms to 1 second of CPU time or 300 KB to 3 MB of disk I/O |
| Low | Below 300 ms of CPU time and below 300 KB of disk I/O |
These are Microsoft’s criteria for startup impact. The label can help prioritize review, but it does not establish that an app is unnecessary or safe to disable. Check what an app does before changing its startup behavior. Microsoft Learn explains the startup-impact measure.
How do you tell whether a PC optimizer is safe?
A potentially unwanted app (PUA) is not automatically malware, but it still deserves scrutiny. Microsoft says PUAs may show unwanted ads, use a device for cryptomining, offer additional software, or behave in other unwanted ways. Use these checks before you install or approve changes:

- FREE UP STORAGE SPACE WITH SUPERIOR CLEANING Reclaim valuable space on your devices and in the cloud. Delete unnecessary files, remove unused apps, and organize your cloud storage.
- INCREASE THE SPEED AND PERFORMANCE OF YOUR DEVICES Bloatware and needless applications running in the background can slow down your devices. Keep them running at their best by reducing background app activity, uninstalling apps you no longer need, and fixing common problems.
- KEEP YOUR DEVICES HEALTHY AND PERFORMING AT THEIR BEST Devices lose performance over time unless they’re maintained. Automated cleaning and optimization tasks help keep them running at peak efficiency, healthy, and performing better for longer.
- KEEP YOUR ONLINE ACTIVITY TO YOURSELF Increase your online privacy by removing your browsing and download history, tracking cookies, and other web browsing data.
- Verify the source. Get the app from the publisher’s official distribution channel or a trusted store, and confirm the publisher matches the product you intended to download. Microsoft advises downloading apps only from trusted sources and being thoughtful about what you install. Microsoft’s PUA guidance explains the risk.
- Read every installer screen. Decline unrelated offers and look for unclear defaults, especially options that add another app or change browser or system settings.
- Demand an explanation for each change. Stop if the tool relies on scare messages, exaggerated repair counts, unclear permission requests, or unexplained system changes. Microsoft identifies rogue security software that reports nonexistent threats as a malware category.
- Do not weaken security. Reject requests to disable antivirus, block security updates, or make unexplained changes to security-related registry entries or boot settings. Microsoft lists interfering with security software or updates, unauthorized registry changes, and boot-process tampering among concerning behaviors in its PUA classification criteria.
- Check reputation-based PUA protection. Microsoft’s instructions for Windows 10 recommend leaving PUA blocking on and enabling both app and download blocking. The download-blocking option works with Edge, and labels or defaults can differ by Windows version. Use the instructions that match your installed version rather than assuming the same settings path applies everywhere. Microsoft’s Windows 10 PUA settings instructions provide the version-specific details.
If you already installed a suspicious app
Microsoft advises uninstalling unwanted software through Settings, running a full Microsoft Defender scan, and using Microsoft Defender Offline if needed. Follow Microsoft’s current instructions for your Windows version: protect your PC from potentially unwanted applications.

Judge a utility by a specific task and a result you can verify—not by the number of items it finds or a subjective “boost” label. First record a baseline, then make one change at a time and check the same measure afterward.

- Choose a measurable symptom: startup time, the launch time of a particular app, available disk space, or whether a recurring slowdown stops.
- Compare the proposed change with the symptom: a startup manager may be relevant to a slow sign-in; a cleanup feature is relevant only if storage or removable files are part of the problem.
- Review the changes before applying them: prefer tools that explain each action and let you select changes individually instead of requiring a bulk cleanup.
- Preserve a recovery option: keep suitable backups or restore options before allowing broad system changes.
- Weigh convenience against overlap and cost: Windows already provides many maintenance controls. A paid utility may be worthwhile to a particular user if its extra features or convenience address a real need, but that is not proof of a general performance gain.
When comparing products, look at the task each addresses, clarity and selectivity of changes, installer transparency, overlap with Windows tools, ongoing cost and limitations, and whether the claimed benefit can be measured on your PC. A review can help identify features and usability, but it is not a safety certification or proof of a universal speed increase.
For example, TechRadar’s comparison labeled 2026 discusses CCleaner, IObit Advanced SystemCare, Iolo System Mechanic, and Ashampoo WinOptimizer. It describes its own testing and flags an optional software offer in the IObit installer; those observations may change as products and installers change. Check current versions, installer screens, features, pricing, and regional availability before relying on them. TechRadar also notes that many optimizer tasks can be handled with Windows’ built-in maintenance tools, while paid editions may sell convenience or additional features. Read TechRadar’s PC optimization software comparison as a dated secondary review, not a universal safety verdict.
