A Google algorithm update is one possible explanation for a ranking drop, not a diagnosis. Compare Search Console data across equivalent periods, check Google’s Search Status Dashboard for rollout dates, and test other explanations—such as indexing problems, changing search demand or a site migration—before attributing the loss to an update. Timing overlap can support a connection, but it does not prove one.

Start by identifying what actually changed

In Google Search Console, open the Performance report and compare the affected period with a comparable earlier period. Review clicks, impressions and average position together: each describes a different part of search performance, and a change in clicks alone does not establish that rankings fell.

Inspect the queries and pages with the largest click losses, then segment the report by country, device and Search type. The Search type filter can separate Web, Images, Video and News results where relevant. Use a 16-month view to check whether a similar dip appears at the same time of year.

  • Clicks down, impressions fairly steady: Look at average position and the affected results. A modest position decline, a change in how results are presented, titles or snippets, or stronger competing results may reduce clicks without a comparable fall in impressions.
  • Impressions and clicks down together: Check which queries and pages lost visibility, and whether the change is limited to a particular country, device or search type.
  • Average position down: Determine whether the movement is small or substantial and whether it affects one URL, a page group or many queries. Average position is a summary, so inspect the underlying query and page rows before drawing conclusions.

Google’s traffic-drop guidance gives a move from position 2 to 4 as an example of a small decline and a move from position 4 to 29 as a large one. These are illustrations, not benchmarks for what every site should expect.

Check whether a Google update lines up with the decline

Review the Google Search Status Dashboard for the start and end dates of a listed core update or relevant broad Search issue. Compare those dates with the first clear change in your Search Console data.

For a core update, Google recommends waiting at least one full week after rollout completion before analyzing Search Console data. Compare the week after that waiting period with the week before the rollout began. This makes the comparison less vulnerable to the unsettled period during rollout.

A dashboard notice supports a possible timing relationship; it does not prove that the update caused your site’s loss. The dashboard reports widespread issues, so no notice does not rule out a cause affecting a limited number of sites or searchers. See Google’s guidance on debugging Search traffic drops and core updates.

Test other explanations against the pattern

Use the scope and timing of the loss to decide which checks are most relevant. A problem concentrated in one group of URLs points toward different checks than a broad decline across queries and sections.

  • Ultra-thin bezels: Maximize your viewing experience with thin bezels.
  • Crawling or indexing: In Search Console, review Crawl stats and Page indexing for changes in errors or excluded pages. If only a page group is affected, inspect representative URLs from that group.
  • Security: Check the Security Issues report in Search Console for findings such as malware or phishing.
  • Spam policy or manual action: Review the Manual Actions report and Google’s spam policies. A policy issue can reduce visibility or remove content from results.
  • Demand or seasonality: Compare affected queries with Google Trends and with the same period in the previous year’s Search Console data. Search interest can change independently of rankings.
  • Site move: If you changed URLs or domains, investigate redirects, recrawling and indexing as part of the migration. Google’s site-move guidance explains the relevant considerations.
  • Search data anomaly: Check Google’s Search Console Data Anomalies information for a processing change or logging error that could affect the chart.

For each possibility, ask whether its timing matches the decline, whether its scope matches the affected URLs, whether it fits the clicks/impressions/position pattern, and whether there is independent evidence—such as a dashboard notice, indexing error, security finding, demand trend or migration. These checks make an explanation more or less plausible; none alone proves causation.

Decide whether the drop warrants a content response

Do not treat every fluctuation as a signal to rewrite pages. Google says a core update is broad and does not target a particular site or page. A ranking decline by itself does not establish that a site was penalized or that its content is fundamentally poor. Google’s traffic-drop guidance notes that “there might not be anything fundamentally wrong with your content.”

If the decline is small and impressions remain fairly steady, first examine the affected results and query-level data rather than making drastic edits to pages that are already performing well. If a large decline persists across many terms, assess the site more broadly: review technical and policy issues and whether the content is helpful, reliable and people-first.

Set a realistic expectation for recovery

Google says some improvements can affect Search results within days, while changes that require its systems to assess longer-term site quality may take several months. Search results are dynamic, and Google does not guarantee a visible ranking improvement from any specific change. Avoid promising a recovery date; monitor the affected queries and pages over time after addressing evidence-backed issues.
