A car can steer itself in a limited sense without driving itself. Lane-centering assistance makes ongoing steering adjustments to help keep the car in its lane; lane-keeping assistance usually nudges the car back when it detects an unintended drift. In either case, the driver may still have to watch the road and remain responsible for driving. Check the manual for your exact vehicle to learn what its system does and when it can be used.
What “steer itself” can mean
Driver-assistance features can apply steering input while leaving the driving task with the driver. The key distinction is whether the system is helping with one or more controls, or whether it is responsible for driving under defined conditions.
- Lane-departure warning: Alerts you to lane drift; you steer.
- Lane-keeping assistance: Temporarily corrects steering when the system detects an unintended lane departure.
- Lane-centering assistance: Makes sustained steering adjustments to help maintain the vehicle’s position within a lane.
- SAE Level 1: Assists with steering or with acceleration and braking; the driver monitors and performs the rest of the driving task.
- SAE Level 2: Can assist with steering and speed control together, but the driver must continue monitoring and remains responsible.
- SAE Level 3: Performs the driving task in limited conditions, with a driver available to take over when required.
These are general concepts, not classifications of a particular model. Vehicle makers may use different feature names, and a car can combine functions. SAE’s J3048 summary distinguishes lane-keeping assistance, which is temporary, from lane centering, which makes sustained steering adjustments: SAE Recommended Practice J3048_202402, revised February 2024.
How to identify what your car actually does
- Find the feature in the owner’s manual. Search the index or the driver-assistance section for the name shown in the car’s display. Do not judge capability from a label such as “pilot,” “autopilot,” “hands-free,” or “assist.” NHTSA recommends consulting the manual for vehicle-specific feature information: Driver Assistance Technologies.
- Check the steering behavior. Does the feature only warn you, intervene briefly when you drift, or make continuing adjustments to help center the car? Those behaviors are different, even if all involve lane markings.
- Check whether it also controls speed. The manual should say whether the system can accelerate or brake, such as to maintain a set speed or following distance. Steering and speed assistance together still do not, by themselves, mean the car is autonomous.
- Read the operating conditions and attention rules. Note where the feature works, what road or lane conditions it needs, how it checks driver attention, and what warnings or takeover requests it gives. Find out what happens if lane markings are unsuitable or the system disengages.
- Follow the vehicle’s instructions while driving. Treat steering input as assistance unless the vehicle documentation explicitly says that the system assumes the driving task in defined conditions and explains your responsibilities.
Why a moving steering wheel is not proof of self-driving
The wheel turning tells you that the car is making a steering input; it does not tell you who is responsible for monitoring the road. Under Levels 1 and 2, the driver remains engaged and responsible even when the system helps with steering, speed, or both. IIHS describes Level 2 as partial automation that requires the driver to remain engaged: IIHS: Advanced driver-assistance systems.

“Hands-free” also does not necessarily mean driverless. A system may allow you to take your hands off the wheel in specified conditions while still requiring you to watch the road and be ready to respond. Use the attention requirements in your vehicle’s manual rather than assuming that hands-free operation transfers responsibility to the car.

NHTSA’s phrase “You must steer, brake, and accelerate” appears in its Level 0 “You Drive, You Monitor” description. It describes that level and should not be treated as a universal instruction for every vehicle or automation level.
