A brief flash or streak is more consistent with a meteor; a smooth light that travels steadily for minutes is more consistent with a satellite. Brightness alone cannot settle it: a fireball is a very bright meteor, while satellites such as the International Space Station can also look bright. Look at duration, motion, and whether a trail remains—and treat an isolated sighting as a best-fit identification, not proof.

What do “meteor,” “fireball,” and “satellite” mean?

  • Meteor: The visible streak or path made when a meteoroid enters Earth’s atmosphere and disintegrates. The meteor is the luminous event, not the space rock itself.
  • Fireball: A particularly bright meteor. The American Meteor Society (AMS) generally uses brighter than magnitude -4—roughly the brightness of Venus—as a rule of thumb. That threshold describes brightness; it does not identify an object by itself. AMS fireball guidance
  • Satellite: An object in orbit that reflects sunlight as it crosses the sky. The ISS, for example, can appear like a bright star moving steadily without flashing or changing direction. NASA Spot the Station

Compare the motion, duration, and trail

Clue More consistent with a meteor or fireball More consistent with a satellite
Duration A brief flash or streak. In one NASA-documented example, the fireball’s luminous passage lasted about one second. NASA’s fireball account A steady pass that can take minutes to cross the sky. NASA Spot the Station
Motion A sudden streak or flash, sometimes brightening or changing in appearance. Smooth, steady motion. NASA says the ISS does not flash or change direction. NASA Spot the Station
After-effect A glowing train or trail can remain after the meteor has passed. AMS says most glowing trains last seconds, while rare ones last minutes. AMS fireball FAQ A satellite can fade or disappear as it enters Earth’s shadow, but it does not leave an atmospheric train. NASA Spot the Station
Brightness “Fireball” is a brightness category; AMS’s general threshold is brighter than magnitude -4, about the brightness of Venus. AMS fireball guidance Satellites can also be bright, including the ISS. Brightness alone does not distinguish one from a meteor. NASA Spot the Station

A lingering trail does not mean the moving object was a satellite. NASA documented a roughly one-second fireball followed by a train that lasted minutes; sunlight reflecting from dust left by the meteoroid made the train visible, and upper-atmosphere winds later distorted it. NASA’s fireball account

How to check a suspected sighting

  1. Write down the time and location. Include your observation date, local time, and where you were watching from.
  2. Record how it moved. Note whether it flashed or streaked suddenly, or traveled smoothly and steadily; estimate how long it was visible.
  3. Map its path. Record the direction, the apparent start and end points against recognizable stars or a compass direction, and its elevation above the horizon.
  4. Describe its appearance. Note apparent brightness and color, but use these as supporting details rather than decisive tests.
  5. Compare with other observations or a pass prediction. For a suspected fireball, submit a report to the AMS fireball reporting service; grouped sightings from different viewpoints can help establish a trajectory. For a suspected ISS sighting, check NASA Spot the Station for a pass prediction matched to your location and date.

When can you see the ISS?

An ISS pass is visible when the station is sunlit while the observer’s sky is dark, so sightings often occur around dawn or dusk. The opportunity depends on the date and location; a pass prediction is more useful than a general schedule. NASA says no telescope is needed to see the station. NASA Spot the Station

What if the clues do not agree?

Do not force a definitive answer from color, brightness, or a short description alone. A single sighting without a reliable duration, direction, or corroborating reports may not support confident attribution. The best practical judgment comes from the combination: a brief flash or streak and possible lingering train favor a meteor; sustained, smooth motion favors a satellite. If you are unsure, keep the observation details and compare them with reports or a location-specific pass prediction.
