Look for a small outward-facing capture light on the front of the glasses. On Ray-Ban Meta models, that light signals when the camera is capturing, but the exact photo and video pattern is described differently by Ray-Ban and Meta. A light you cannot see—or do not recognize—is not proof that the glasses are not recording.
Find the capture light on the front of the frame
On Ray-Ban Meta glasses, the capture LED is on the outside of the frame and faces people nearby. Do not confuse it with the inward-facing notification LED, which is for the wearer, or the light on the charging case, which indicates charge status. Photo and video signals vary by source and model
For Ray-Ban Meta glasses, the official descriptions do not match exactly. Ray-Ban’s FAQ says a photo makes the capture and notification LEDs blink white once, while video recording makes both stay solid white. Meta’s July 2026 FAQ says the outward-facing capture light blinks briefly for a photo and continues blinking during video. These details are specific to the cited Meta and Ray-Ban guidance. Indicator placement and behavior can differ across brands and generations, and the available information does not establish a complete cross-brand comparison.
Why the light is not a guarantee either way
- A visible capture light is a useful signal, not a full explanation. Its presence can indicate that a supported device is capturing, but it does not tell you what has been recorded or how the content will be used.
- No visible light does not prove recording is off. The glasses could be another model, the light could be difficult to see, or an observer might not know where or what to look for.
- Awareness cannot be assumed. A 2024 qualitative study of wearer perceptions around Ray-Ban Stories found that participants did not necessarily expect bystanders to recognize the glasses as camera-equipped or understand the white light as a recording indicator. What Meta says about a blocked capture light
Meta says the capture LED has no off switch. Meta also says its second-generation glasses disable the camera when they detect that the capture LED is blocked; capture remains unavailable until the light is detected as unblocked. Meta’s responsible-innovation guidance likewise says the glasses prohibit capture when the light is covered. Treat this as Meta’s description of its products, not a guarantee for every camera-glasses brand or generation. If you do not want to be recorded
- Ask the wearer directly to stop. A light may be hard to see, so raising the concern is clearer than relying on the indicator alone.
- Move away if practical. If you are at a venue or event, you can also raise the issue with its staff or organizer.
- Do not treat the light as proof of what happened. Its appearance does not establish exactly what was captured, and its absence does not establish that nothing was recorded.
Meta advises people to ask permission before capturing others. The Associated Press reported Meta’s recommendation: “Respect people’s preferences. Not everyone loves being photographed. Stop recording if anyone expresses that they would rather you not.” Associated Press, October 6, 2026
