If someone’s cannabis use and behavior are worrying you, talk when it is safe and they are calm: describe specific actions, listen without judgment, and offer a practical next step. If they are threatening someone, using a weapon, or need urgent medical help, create distance and contact emergency services instead. Cannabis and violence have been associated in some research, but that does not establish that cannabis caused a particular person’s behavior.
First decide whether a conversation is safe
Do not try to persuade someone who is actively threatening or assaulting another person, has a weapon, is rapidly escalating, or appears medically unstable. Move to a safer place, help others get distance if you can do so safely, and contact emergency services for immediate danger or urgent medical need.
For a behavioral health crisis in the United States, call or text 988. Depending on the area, mobile crisis teams or other local crisis services may be available. SAMHSA describes crisis care as “Someone to Contact,” “Someone to Respond,” and “A Safe Place for Help”; local options vary. For immediate danger, use emergency services rather than treating a crisis line as a substitute.
How to raise the concern when things are calm
- Choose a safer moment. If possible, wait until the person is no longer acutely intoxicated, agitated, or escalating. Plan what you want to say, and consider a shared, low-pressure activity if that feels safe.
- Describe what you observed. Give a specific example, including when it happened and how it affected you or someone else. For example: “When you shouted and shoved the door last night, I felt unsafe.” Avoid labels such as “addict,” “violent by nature,” or “psychotic.”
- Invite their perspective. Ask an open question, such as “How do you think things have been going?” Then listen. The CDC’s guidance is: “Try to listen without judgment.”
- Offer support, not an ultimatum. Ask what kind of help they would consider, and suggest one next step, such as speaking with a clinician or looking for treatment. You do not need to have the solution: CDC says, “You don’t need to have the solution if a friend tells you they are struggling with their mental health or substance use.”
- Set boundaries and follow up. You can care about the person while saying clearly that threats or violence are not acceptable and that you will leave or seek help if you feel unsafe. If the conversation cannot continue productively, pause it and check in later only if it is safe.
This approach follows the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s advice to prepare, listen without judgment, let the other person lead if willing, offer support, and follow up. It is practical guidance, not a script proven to work in every situation.

What the evidence does—and does not—say about cannabis and violence
A 2022 scoping review found an association between cannabis and violence in some literature, but concluded that findings varied across populations and that the extent of any causal relationship remained unclear. A study of 1,089 people detained under a UK mental-health law also reported associations involving violent behavior, psychotic symptoms, and recent substance use. Because that was a selected emergency psychiatric population, it cannot establish that cannabis causes violence generally or explain one person’s actions.
The CDC says cannabis can cause disorientation, anxiety, and paranoia, and that use is associated with psychosis and other mental-health outcomes. Those population-level findings do not diagnose someone or prove why a particular incident happened. In conversation, focus on what the person did and the effect it had, rather than claiming cannabis caused it.

When cannabis use may warrant professional assessment
Suggest a professional assessment if use is causing problems and the person seems unable to stop. CDC describes cannabis use disorder as being unable to stop using cannabis even when it causes health or social problems. Possible signs include:
- Using more cannabis than intended.
- Trying to quit or cut down but not succeeding.
- Having cravings.
- Continuing despite problems at home, school, work, or in relationships.
- Giving up important activities, or continuing despite physical or psychological problems.
These signs may be a reason to encourage an assessment; they do not allow a friend or family member to diagnose the person. CDC reported in 2024 that approximately 3 in 10 people who use cannabis have cannabis use disorder. This is a population estimate, not a prediction about any individual; CDC says risk is greater among people who begin during youth or adolescence and use more frequently.

Recognize possible overconsumption and get help
CDC lists severe confusion, anxiety, paranoia, panic, a fast heart rate, delusions or hallucinations, and severe nausea or vomiting among signs of using too much cannabis. If you suspect overconsumption, contact Poison Control in the United States at 1-800-222-1222. Call 911 for an emergency or urgent medical need. Do not try to resolve severe symptoms through a difficult conversation.
