Use the WebDriver screenshot method to capture the current browsing context, or the element screenshot method to capture one specific element. Selenium provides both approaches in Python, Java, and C#. The examples below save PNG files and close the browser session when finished.
Choose a driver screenshot or an element screenshot
- Driver screenshot: Captures from the current browsing context. Use it when you need a screenshot of the page or browser context Selenium is currently controlling.
- Element screenshot: Captures a particular element, such as a chart, image, or panel. Use the element API rather than taking a driver screenshot and cropping it yourself.
Selenium documents its WebDriver screenshot endpoint as returning Base64-encoded image data. The bindings provide methods that save the result to a file or expose the image data for further handling. Do not assume a driver screenshot is universally a full-page capture: capture extent can depend on the browser and driver, and the cited Selenium documentation does not establish one rule that applies to all combinations.
Python: save a driver or element screenshot
Capture the current browsing context

driver.quit()The documented Python method is driver.save_screenshot(path). It saves the current screenshot to the specified path. The Python API also provides get_screenshot_as_png(), which returns PNG bytes when you want to process or store the image data yourself.

driver.quit()Replace main with a selector for the element you need. Python’s WebElement.screenshot(path) saves that element’s screenshot to the given path.

}The Java pattern casts the driver to TakesScreenshot, requests OutputType.FILE, and copies the returned file to the target path. This example uses Apache Commons IO’s FileUtils; include the Apache Commons IO dependency in your project to use that copy operation.

Take a screenshot inside an iframe
WebDriver commands target the current browsing context. If the content you need is inside an iframe, switch into that frame before locating or capturing its contents. Selenium supports selecting a frame by its element, name or ID, or index. Switch back to the top-level page with defaultContent() when you are done.

driver.switchTo().defaultContent();Use the equivalent frame-switching methods in your language binding. Switching frames changes where subsequent WebDriver commands are directed; it is not a screenshot-format option.

Common screenshot problems and fixes
- The screenshot shows the wrong page or tab: Select the intended window or tab before navigating or capturing. Driver-level capture operates on the current context.
- An element inside an iframe cannot be found: Switch into the iframe before locating the element. Return with
defaultContent()to interact with the top-level page again. - The output file is missing: Check that the process can write to the requested path and that the destination directory exists. Use an explicit path if the program’s working directory is not the one you expected.
- Java cannot resolve
FileUtils: The sample uses Apache Commons IO. Add that dependency, or replace the copy operation with your project’s file-copy method. - The saved image does not include the entire page: A normal driver screenshot is not guaranteed to be full-page across browsers and drivers. Check the behavior documented for your chosen driver; use an element screenshot when you only need a specific element.
- The image format does not match the extension: Keep the path and selected format aligned. The examples save PNG files; C# explicitly selects
ScreenshotImageFormat.Png.

Can I get screenshot data in memory instead of saving a file?
Yes. Python’s documented get_screenshot_as_png() method returns PNG bytes. Java and C# expose screenshot results through their binding APIs, including file output methods shown above.

Does a Selenium driver screenshot always capture the full webpage?
No universal full-page rule is established for all browser and driver combinations. Check the behavior documented for the specific driver you use.
