For a still image of the video frame, use VLC’s built-in snapshot command: pause at the desired moment and choose the snapshot command from the Video menu. For a picture of the entire player window, its controls, or another visible part of the desktop, use Windows Snipping Tool instead.
Choose the right kind of capture
“Screenshot” can mean two different results:

VLC’s command is a media-player operation; Snipping Tool is an operating-system screen capture. Use the first when the frame itself matters and the second when the surrounding interface matters.
Take a video-frame snapshot in VLC
1. Pause on the frame
Open the video in VLC and pause at the moment you want. Pausing is a practical way to select the exact displayed frame before invoking the snapshot command.
2. Use the Video menu
Open Video > Snapshot. Some VLC documentation and versions label the same command Video > Take Snapshot. Both labels refer to VLC’s still-image capture of the current video display.

3. Try the keyboard shortcut
The VLC FAQ lists these defaults:

Command+Alt+S
A shortcut may have been changed, may conflict with another application, or may differ from the active build. If it does nothing, use the menu command first, then inspect the configured hotkey.
4. Check or change the active hotkey
- Open Tools > Preferences in VLC.
- Select the Interface section.
- Open Hotkeys settings. If the relevant controls are hidden, enable Advanced options.
- Find Take video snapshot and read or assign its shortcut.
- Save the preference and try the new combination.
The exact menu wording can vary with the VLC release, but the FAQ identifies Take video snapshot as the setting to inspect.
Find the saved image and change its settings
Default locations by platform
VideoLAN’s FAQ lists these default destinations:

The VLC Desktop User Documentation 3.0 guide also describes Windows snapshots as PNG files in My Pictures by default. Installations, operating-system folder conventions, and user preferences can produce a different result, so treat the configured directory as authoritative.
Set the folder or format
- Open Tools > Preferences.
- Select Video.
- Locate Video snapshot directory and choose the folder where captures should be written.
- Use the snapshot-format controls in the same video-preferences area to select the format available in your VLC installation.
- Save the settings, capture another frame, and check the selected directory.
If you cannot find the file, search the configured folder rather than relying on the platform default. A successful snapshot should appear there immediately after the command completes.

Capture the player window or screen with Windows Snipping Tool
Use this method when the VLC controls, a subtitle overlay, the surrounding application, or a specific screen region must appear in the result.
Open the overlay
Press Windows key + Shift + S. The Snipping Tool overlay lets you choose one of four capture types:
- Rectangular snip: drag around the area to keep.
- Window snip: select a visible application window.
- Full-screen snip: capture the entire display.
- Freeform snip: draw an irregular outline.
Select the mode, make the capture, and use the notification or Snipping Tool editor to save it with Save as. Microsoft also documents Print Screen for a static full-screen image copied to the clipboard. Snipping Tool’s automatic-save behavior and folder can vary between Windows releases and settings, so use Save as when you need a known filename or location.
When Snipping Tool is the better choice
- You need the VLC timeline, play button, title bar, or other controls visible.
- You want only a selected part of the desktop rather than the video frame alone.
- The video is displayed in a different application and has no usable snapshot command.
- You need a window or full-screen capture rather than a player-generated still.

A Microsoft Q&A response dated November 25, 2011 describes Windows Media Player 10 on Windows XP using Ctrl+I for MPEG/MPEG2 capture. The same response discusses reducing video acceleration, pressing Alt+Print Screen, and pasting the player window into Paint.

That answer is historical community guidance, not current universal documentation for Windows Media Player. Do not assume Ctrl+I works in a current Windows release or with every video format. If you are using present-day Windows and need the visible interface, use Snipping Tool; if you are using VLC, use its own snapshot command.
Troubleshoot a missing or incorrect screenshot
The Video menu has no obvious Snapshot wording
Look for either Snapshot or Take Snapshot. The two labels are documented names for the same function in different VLC documentation/version contexts. If neither appears, verify that you are using VLC rather than another player or a customized interface.
The keyboard shortcut does nothing
- Use the menu command to confirm that VLC can create a snapshot.
- Open Preferences > Interface > Hotkeys settings, enable Advanced options, and inspect Take video snapshot.
- Assign a shortcut that is not already used by another application, save the preference, and try again.
The file is not in the folder you expected
Open Preferences > Video and read Video snapshot directory. The configured path takes precedence over the platform defaults listed by the FAQ. Check that directory after making a new capture.
The result contains the player or desktop instead of only the frame
You used a screen-capture method. For a media-only still, pause in VLC and use Video > Snapshot. For a deliberate interface capture, keep using Snipping Tool and select the required window or region.

You need the controls in the image, but the VLC snapshot does not show them
Switch to Snipping Tool. Choose a window snip or rectangular snip while the controls are visible, because that tool captures what is on screen rather than asking VLC for the video image alone.
The shortcut differs from the one in a guide
Hotkeys are configurable. The VLC FAQ lists the combinations above, but your installation may have a changed assignment. The hotkey settings page is the definitive place to read the active binding.
