Use Chrome DevTools or Firefox’s built-in screenshot feature to capture the entire rendered page, then save the image with a separate record of its URL, capture time, browser, and viewport. A screenshot can document what a page looked like; by itself, it cannot prove a change in rankings, indexing, or search traffic.
Choose a full-page screenshot method
Chrome DevTools and Firefox both capture content beyond the visible browser window. Choose the browser your team already uses and match the viewport and page state when making comparisons.
| Method | Best fit | What it captures |
|---|---|---|
| Chrome DevTools | People already using DevTools or device mode | The full page, or just the current viewport, depending on the command selected |
| Firefox built-in screenshot | A direct, user-facing capture without opening DevTools | The full page using the Save full page action |
| Firefox DevTools | People who need a selected element or console options | The full page or an element, with options available through the console helper |
The official instructions describe features and steps, not controlled speed or usability tests, so there is no established basis for calling one browser objectively faster or better.
Capture a full page in Chrome
- Open the page in Chrome, then open DevTools.
- If the comparison depends on a device or viewport, enable device mode and set the intended dimensions. Use the same settings for later captures.
- Open DevTools’ More options menu and select Capture a full size screenshot. Do not choose Capture screenshot if you need content below the current viewport; that command captures only what is visible.
- Save the image using a descriptive filename and record the capture context separately.
Google documents the full-size and viewport-only commands in its Chrome DevTools screenshot instructions.

Capture a full page in Firefox
Use Firefox’s built-in screenshot action
- Right-click an unobstructed area of the page and choose Take Screenshot. If the screenshot button is available in your browser, you can use it instead.
- Choose Save full page.
- Download the resulting image and preserve its original file.
Mozilla says the default filename includes the capture date and time and the page title. See Mozilla Support’s Firefox screenshot instructions.
Use Firefox DevTools for a page or element
Firefox DevTools can capture a whole page or a selected element. In the documented workflow, its screenshot toolbar icon is not enabled by default: open DevTools settings and enable Take a screenshot of the entire page, then use the icon. The Web Console :screenshot helper is an alternative when you need options such as a filename, delay, or device-pixel-ratio. Mozilla describes these routes in its Firefox DevTools screenshot documentation.

Keep before-and-after captures interpretable
A screenshot is most useful when someone else can tell what was captured and under what conditions. Keep the original image unchanged and store a sidecar note or a structured filename with these details:
- Page URL, including the relevant path and query parameters.
- Capture date and time, with UTC or an explicit timezone.
- Browser and version.
- Viewport dimensions or device mode.
- What changed and when the change was deployed.
- If the claim concerns a search result: query, locale, device, and result context.
- If the claim concerns indexing or performance: links to or exports from the relevant Search Console records.
For a comparison, keep the URL, viewport, browser conditions, and relevant page state consistent where possible. Record differences such as a consent banner, logged-in state, personalization, delayed or lazy-loaded content, or a page that changed between captures. If a long image is hard to inspect, add a clearly labeled close-up or crop, but retain the original full-page image.

What a screenshot can and cannot show about search
A screenshot records the visual rendering visible in the browser at capture time. A page screenshot does not show a search results page unless you captured that results page. It cannot, on its own, establish ranking history, indexing status, impressions, clicks, or why a search position changed.

For a page-level indexing question, Google Search Console’s URL Inspection tool lets a site owner inspect indexed information and compare it with a live test. Google describes it as a way to see what Google knows about a specific page and test its live version; the tool lets you switch between indexed and live information. Use the relevant Search Console report or a saved result-page record for the specific claim, and identify the query, date, market or locale, and device when those details matter. See Google’s URL Inspection guidance.
Do not infer that a visible page edit caused a search-position change from a pair of screenshots alone. The images document appearance, not causation.

For repeat captures, ScreenshotNeo offers a website screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Its capture workflow can accept cookie or consent banners and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before the shot; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status in headers.

Troubleshooting captures
- The image shows only the visible area in Chrome: Reopen DevTools’ More options menu and select Capture a full size screenshot, not Capture screenshot.
- The Firefox screenshot control is missing: For the DevTools toolbar workflow, enable Take a screenshot of the entire page in DevTools settings. Alternatively, use the page’s right-click Take Screenshot action.
- The captures do not line up: Check viewport or device mode, browser state, login status, overlays, and whether dynamic or lazy-loaded content had time to appear. Note any differences rather than treating the images as a controlled comparison.
- The full-page image is difficult to review: Keep the original intact and make a labeled crop or close-up as a supplement.
- The screenshot is being used to explain an indexing or ranking change: Pair it with the relevant Search Console record or saved search-results capture. A page image alone does not establish search status or performance.
