For bulk URL screenshots on AWS Lambda, use a queue-driven pipeline: validate a submitted URL list, create a job, enqueue one task per URL, and let independent Lambda workers run headless Chromium through Puppeteer. Each worker stores its screenshot in Amazon S3 and records a result for that URL. This design gives you bounded concurrency, retries, and per-page failure tracking instead of making one HTTP request wait for every page.
A single Lambda invocation can work for a small batch if it finishes within the function timeout and invocation payload limits. For larger or unpredictable batches, return a job ID and expose progress and results asynchronously. AWS’s Puppeteer example demonstrates the fan-out pattern, but its older browser and package versions should not be treated as a current deployment recipe.
Choose a batch design
Small batch: one invocation
A single function can process URLs sequentially for a prototype or modest, predictable batch. It is simple to build, but each slow page delays the rest, and one invocation has a finite timeout. Use it only after measuring representative pages and confirming the batch fits with headroom.
Production batch: one task per URL
For production, create a job record and enqueue a separate task for each URL. Workers can run independently, so a failed page can be retried without repeating successful captures. The caller receives a job ID promptly, then polls or subscribes for completion. AWS documents both synchronous and asynchronous Lambda invocation; for asynchronous invocation, events enter a queue before delivery, and delivery can occasionally happen more than once even without an error. Build for duplicate processing rather than assuming exactly-once execution. AWS Lambda retry behavior

Front-door choice
AWS describes Lambda Function URLs as suitable for simple applications and prototyping. Choose API Gateway when you need richer authentication, traffic management, throttling, custom domains, or request/response transformation. AWS guidance on choosing an HTTP endpoint for Lambda
Set capture semantics before coding
Decide what one successful result means; otherwise, captures from different workers may not be comparable. Persist the chosen settings with the job.
- Capture area: viewport or full page.
- Viewport and scale: width, height, and device scale factor.
- Readiness: a navigation event, a specific selector, network idle, or a deliberate delay. A page that never becomes idle needs an explicit timeout or alternative condition.
- Navigation policy: whether redirects are followed and whether targets require authentication.
- Output: image format, naming convention, and any retention policy you implement in S3.
Build the request and worker flow
- Accept and validate the batch. Parse the submitted URLs, enforce a maximum batch size appropriate to your system, and reject malformed or unsupported schemes. If untrusted users can submit targets, restrict requests to approved destinations and block internal networks and cloud metadata endpoints to reduce server-side request forgery risk.
- Create a job record. Store a job identifier, requested capture settings, submission time, and overall state in durable storage separate from Lambda’s temporary filesystem.
- Enqueue one work item per URL. Include the job ID, URL, and capture settings. Use bounded concurrency and backpressure so you do not overwhelm your Lambda concurrency quota or target websites.
- Launch Chromium in the worker. Use Puppeteer to open one page with explicit navigation and operation timeouts. Capture the viewport or full page according to the job configuration.
- Write the image to S3. Use a deterministic object key, such as a path derived from the job ID and URL-task identifier. Keep transient browser files in
/tmp; it is function-local temporary storage, not durable output storage. - Record the per-URL outcome. Save status, normalized URL, object key on success, capture timestamp, viewport, and a useful error category on failure.
- Expose progress and results. Provide a job-status endpoint or notification mechanism that reports partial completion as well as the final batch state.
Package Chromium for Lambda
Chromium and its native dependencies must match the Lambda deployment environment. AWS supports ZIP archives and layers as well as container images; its published Puppeteer screenshot example uses a container image. Pin and validate the browser build, runtime, architecture, and dependency set together in the same Lambda environment you will deploy. The example establishes that the approach works, not that its older base image or package versions remain current. AWS Puppeteer screenshot example
Do not assume a browser will fit default memory or temporary-storage settings. AWS currently documents a standard maximum function timeout of 900 seconds (15 minutes), configurable memory from 128 MB to 10,240 MB, and configurable /tmp storage from 512 MB to 10,240 MB. Lambda allocates CPU in proportion to configured memory. Browser startup, rendering, image encoding, and S3 uploads all use time and resources, so profile representative pages and leave headroom. Asynchronous events may be retried or delivered more than once. Give every job-and-URL pair an idempotency key. On a retry, either recognize and reuse an existing successful result or safely overwrite the deterministic object key and status record. This prevents duplicate objects and ambiguous batch results. Represent each URL independently rather than returning one batch-level success flag. A useful result record includes:
- Job ID and per-URL task ID.
- Normalized requested URL and capture settings.
- Status such as queued, running, succeeded, or failed.
- S3 object key and capture timestamp when successful.
- Error category and a concise diagnostic when unsuccessful.
Monitor function duration, memory use, timeouts, throttles, browser-launch failures, and output size. Increase worker concurrency only when the account limits and destination sites can handle it.
Keep invocation payloads small
Avoid passing a very large URL list in a single Lambda event. AWS documents invocation payload limits of 6 MB for synchronous invocation and 1 MB for asynchronous invocation. Store large batches durably and enqueue references or individual URL tasks instead of embedding the entire list. AWS Lambda Invoke API
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Test, tune, and estimate cost
There is no universal pages-per-second or cost-per-screenshot figure for this workload: page complexity, render wait conditions, browser resources, memory allocation, and concurrency all affect it. Load-test representative target pages, including slow and failure cases. Measure invocation duration and resource use, then adjust memory, timeouts, and concurrency empirically. Count retries and failed captures separately from successful outputs when estimating operational cost; the cited AWS guidance does not establish a general throughput or per-image price.
Common problems and fixes
Chromium fails to launch
Likely cause: the browser binary, native libraries, architecture, or runtime does not match the deployed Lambda environment.

Fix: pin a compatible browser/runtime combination, build for the target architecture, and run a deployment-environment test that launches Chromium before adding batch traffic.
Captures time out or pages appear incomplete
Likely cause: slow navigation, a readiness condition that never occurs, heavy rendering, or insufficient function resources.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Fix: set explicit navigation and capture timeouts, choose a readiness condition suitable for the page, and profile with higher memory or more time headroom. Do not let one stalled URL block an entire batch; isolate it as its own task.
Some URLs fail while others succeed
Likely cause: one or more targets are unreachable, reject automation, require authentication, or return an error page.
Fix: persist per-URL statuses and useful error categories, retry only transient failures with backoff, and leave permanent failures visible in the completed job results.

Retries produce duplicate files or conflicting status
Likely cause: asynchronous delivery is at-least-once in practice, so a task can be processed more than once.
Fix: use an idempotency key per job/URL pair and deterministic object keys, and make result updates conditional or otherwise safe to repeat.
Workers are throttled
Likely cause: fan-out exceeds available account concurrency or sends too much traffic to destination sites.
Fix: cap queue consumption or worker concurrency, apply backpressure, and tune using observed duration, throttles, and target response behavior.
Large submissions are rejected
Likely cause: the URL list exceeds the invocation payload limit.
