For repeatable captures and automated comparisons, use Playwright with full-page screenshots and, when you need regression checks, Playwright Test’s screenshot baselines. In either workflow, keep the browser, operating system, viewport, page state, and capture date consistent so a visual difference is less likely to be a rendering or timing change rather than a website change.
What a full-page screenshot preserves
A full-page screenshot captures content below the visible viewport as well as what is on screen. That makes it useful for preserving a game’s landing page, patch notes, store page, or event announcement as a visual record. A visible-area screenshot is better when the viewport itself is the subject of comparison—for example, how a page appears at a particular screen size.
Decide what you are trying to document before capturing. A screenshot records appearance at a specific time and setup; it does not by itself prove why the page looks that way or establish that text and structure are accessible. For searchable text or semantic structure, use page text or an accessibility snapshot rather than relying on an image.
Capture a full page in Firefox
Use Firefox’s screenshot interface
- Open the page and wait for the content relevant to your research to load. If a menu, animation, delayed image, or other interaction matters, set that state first and note it.
- Open the screenshot interface by right-clicking an empty part of the page and selecting Take Screenshot. You can also use Ctrl+Shift+S on Windows or Linux, or Command+Shift+S on macOS. See Mozilla’s Firefox screenshot instructions for the documented interface.
- Select Save full page to include content below the fold. Choose Save visible when you only want the current viewport; Firefox also supports selecting a region or a highlighted page element.
- Download the image or copy it to the clipboard. Downloaded screenshots go to Firefox’s default download location; the suggested filename includes a timestamp and page title.
- For a research archive, rename or organize the file to retain the page identity and capture date. Add browser, operating system, viewport, and page-state details when they may affect later comparisons.
Use Firefox DevTools for more control
Firefox DevTools includes a configurable screenshot toolbar button for full-page captures. Its Web Console :screenshot helper supports settings such as delay, device-pixel ratio, filename, full-page mode, and a CSS selector. A delay can be useful when you need to capture a menu or hover state after it appears. The helper can also target an element instead of capturing the whole page. Be careful when reusing a filename: capturing again to the same filename overwrites the earlier image. Use distinct names that identify the page and capture date if you need a history of changes.
Capture repeatably with Playwright
Playwright’s full-page option captures the full scrollable page, as if it fit on a very tall screen. A minimal JavaScript example is:

Replace the example URL and filename with the page and naming scheme for your study. The networkidle condition is one possible wait strategy, not a guarantee that every page’s meaningful content has finished rendering; for pages with delayed or interactive content, wait for the specific state your research requires.

Make captures comparable
A visual difference is meaningful only if the captures are sufficiently alike. Browser rendering can vary with the host operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode. For comparisons, try to use the same environment for the original and later captures rather than changing resolution or browser settings between them. Playwright documents these sources of variation and recommends using the same environment as the baseline in its visual comparison guide.

Keep a small record alongside each image. A useful record includes:
- Page URL and capture timestamp.
- Browser and version, operating system, viewport dimensions, and whether the browser was headless.
- Relevant interaction, login, consent, or menu state.
- Any capture delay or other wait condition that could affect what was visible.
This record is a reproducibility practice, not metadata that Playwright automatically saves for you. Page content can change between captures, too, so check for both page changes and environment changes before attributing a difference to a game-site revision.

Compare images manually or with Playwright Test
Manual review
For exploratory research, open the two captures side by side, or use an image viewer’s overlay or difference view. Check that the images show the same page state and have comparable dimensions before interpreting their differences. If they do not align, make a new capture under matching conditions before drawing conclusions.
Automated screenshot baselines
Playwright Test’s toHaveScreenshot() can save a reference image on an initial run and compare later runs against it. To create the initial baseline, Playwright takes multiple screenshots until two consecutive captures match, then saves the last one. You can configure a pixel-difference threshold. A stylesheet can also hide volatile elements such as an iframe to make comparisons more deterministic.
Only mask or hide content that is irrelevant to your research question. Removing a changing element can also hide a real change. Update a reference image when the difference is an intended and verified change, rather than automatically accepting every new image as the baseline.
Choose the right evidence for the research question

Troubleshooting captures and comparisons
- The screenshot misses content below the fold: In Firefox choose Save full page, not Save visible. In Playwright set
fullPage: truein JavaScript orfull_page=Truein Python. - A menu or hover state is missing: Open or trigger that state before capture. In Firefox DevTools, use the delay option if the state needs time to appear; in Playwright, perform the relevant interaction and wait for the resulting state before taking the screenshot.
- The capture is blank or incomplete: The page may not have finished loading the content you need. Wait for a relevant selector or visible state rather than assuming the initial navigation event is enough. Record the wait condition so later captures use the same approach.
- Two captures differ even though the page may not have changed: Check browser version, operating system, viewport, headless mode, power conditions, and changing page content. Capture again in the same environment before treating the difference as a site revision.
- A prior Firefox image disappeared: Check whether you captured to the same filename. Firefox DevTools overwrites an existing image with the same filename; use unique names for successive captures.
- Automated comparisons produce noisy differences: Keep the environment fixed and consider a configured pixel-difference threshold. Hide volatile content only if it is outside the research scope; otherwise, the filter may conceal evidence.
