Use Puppeteer’s ElementHandle.screenshot(): select the target element, wait for it to appear, then call screenshot() on its handle. Puppeteer scrolls the element into view by default. If the node disappears or is replaced before capture, the call throws.
Capture an element with Puppeteer
Install Puppeteer in your project if you have not already, then run this ES module example. Replace https://example.com with the page URL and #target with a selector that identifies the element you want.
import puppeteer from 'puppeteer';
const browser = await puppeteer.launch();
try {
const page = await browser.newPage();
await page.goto('https://example.com');
const element = await page.waitForSelector('#target');
if (!element) {
throw new Error('Target element was not found');
}
await element.screenshot({ path: 'element.png' });
await element.dispose();
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
The key operation is element.screenshot(). The Puppeteer Screenshots guide describes capturing a specific element with ElementHandle.screenshot() (Puppeteer Screenshots guide).

Choose a selector for the intended node
A CSS selector such as #target or .product-card is usually the simplest choice. Make it specific enough to avoid selecting the wrong matching node. Puppeteer also documents text, accessibility role/name, XPath, and selectors that can cross open shadow roots; see its page interactions guide.

waitForSelector() is a lower-level API and returns an element handle. Dispose of the handle after use when it is no longer needed. Puppeteer recommends locators for ordinary selection and interaction, but the screenshot method belongs to the resulting ElementHandle; a locator itself does not provide the element screenshot method.
Choose the output representation
With { path: 'element.png' }, Puppeteer writes the image to that path. Without a path, the screenshot result is a Uint8Array, which you can pass to code that processes or stores bytes. When you need a base64 string, request encoding: 'base64'; the documented overload returns a string in that case. See the ElementHandle.screenshot() API reference.

When to use an element screenshot or a page clip
| Method | Best for | What you provide |
|---|---|---|
ElementHandle.screenshot() |
Capturing a particular live DOM element | An element handle; Puppeteer handles the element’s position and scrolls it into view by default |
Page.screenshot() with clip |
A custom crop in page coordinates, whether or not it corresponds neatly to one element | Crop geometry based on a bounding box; clip scale is optional and defaults to 1 |
For the usual “capture this element” task, the element helper is more direct. Use a page clip when you specifically need to define the crop bounds yourself. The relevant options are documented in the ScreenshotClip API reference and PageScreenshotOptions API reference.

- No element is returned: Check the selector and confirm the page has loaded the content that contains it. Keep the null check if your Puppeteer version or project types allow a missing result, and fail clearly instead of calling
screenshot()on an absent handle. - The screenshot call throws because the element was detached: The page may have replaced or removed the node after selection. Wait until the page reaches the intended state, then query the element again and capture from the fresh handle.
- The target starts outside the viewport:
ElementHandle.screenshot()scrolls it into view by default. ItsscrollIntoViewoption is optional and defaults totrue; consult the installed version’s types and API reference if you need different behavior. - The wrong matching element is captured: Narrow the selector or otherwise choose the intended match rather than assuming an ambiguous selector identifies the desired node.
- The file is not where expected: Check the path relative to the process’s working directory and confirm that the process can write there. If you do not need a file, use the returned bytes directly or request base64 for a string representation.
Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo can capture one element by CSS selector through its screenshot API. A request can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. It also accepts parameters used by other screenshot APIs, which can make switching easier. See the ScreenshotNeo website and API documentation.
