Use Puppeteer’s page.screenshot() method. Launch a browser, navigate to the page, and save the result with a path such as screenshot.png. Set a viewport for predictable dimensions; use fullPage: true for the full document or capture an element when you only need one component.
Set up a TypeScript project
Install Puppeteer in your project so it can download and use its compatible browser. The Puppeteer documentation recommends its bundled browser; using a separate Chrome executable is at your own risk. See the LaunchOptions reference.

npm install --save-dev typescript tsxSave the following as screenshot.ts. Run it with npx tsx screenshot.ts. The code uses the documented Puppeteer flow—launch, create a page, navigate, capture—and a finally block to close the browser even if a step fails.

});The output file is written to the current working directory. networkidle2 is a navigation waiting strategy, not proof that every animation, delayed widget, or other dynamic content is visually complete. If the page needs more time or a specific element to appear, use an explicit wait suited to that page rather than assuming navigation completion means visual readiness. The basic flow is documented in Puppeteer’s Screenshots guide.

Choose the capture scope and output
Capture the visible viewport
The sample captures the current viewport. The setViewport call makes its dimensions explicit; without a deliberate viewport, output can vary with the browser environment. Puppeteer documents an 800×600 default headless screen unless --window-size is specified. Its screen configuration guide notes that --screen-info and dynamic screen add/remove are headless-only.
Capture the full page
Pass fullPage: true to capture the full document instead of only the visible viewport:

await page.screenshot({ path: 'full-page.png', fullPage: true });The screenshot can be much taller than the viewport. If exact output dimensions matter, choose the viewport deliberately and remember that full-page capture changes the capture scope, not the configured viewport itself.
Capture a region or element
Use clip when you want a rectangular region, or select an element and call its screenshot method when you want a DOM component. Puppeteer’s guide shows waiting for the selector before capture; an element screenshot attempts to scroll the element into view.

});Select format, quality, transparency, or returned bytes
Screenshot options let you select an image type, set quality from 0 to 100 for formats that support it, or omit the default background for transparency. Quality does not apply to PNG. Setting path saves a file, and Puppeteer infers the image type from the extension when the type is not set. If you omit path, the method returns image data as a Uint8Array; with encoding: 'base64', it returns a string.

Troubleshooting
The screenshot is blank or incomplete
- Cause: The page has not rendered its important content when capture starts. Fix: Wait for a page-specific selector or other meaningful readiness condition; navigation’s
waitUntilsetting alone does not guarantee visual completion. - Cause: The target content is outside the viewport or loaded only after scrolling. Fix: Use
fullPage: truefor the whole document, or scroll and wait for the relevant content before capturing.
The element screenshot fails
- Cause: The selected element was removed or replaced before capture. Fix: Wait for the selector again immediately before capture and avoid holding a stale element handle across page updates. A detached element causes an error.
- Cause: The selector did not match an element. Fix: Check the selector against the rendered page and handle a missing result, as in the sample.
The screenshot dimensions are unexpected
- Cause: The browser viewport was not set explicitly, or full-page capture was requested. Fix: Set a known viewport before navigation and distinguish viewport output from full-document output. Headless screen settings have separate configuration options and limitations in Puppeteer’s screen configuration guide.
Puppeteer cannot launch the browser
- Cause: The expected browser is missing or an incompatible external executable was selected. Fix: Install Puppeteer’s bundled browser and try the default launch first. The launch reference says Puppeteer is only guaranteed to work with its bundled browser; setting
executablePathis at your own risk.

Which method takes a Puppeteer screenshot?
Use page.screenshot() for a page capture. Use an element handle’s screenshot() method when you need a specific DOM element.
Does Puppeteer return an image or save it automatically?
With a path, it saves the image to that file. Without a path, it returns image data for your code to handle.
