In Windows 11, go to Settings > System > Activation; in Windows 10, go to Settings > Update & Security > Activation. On the Store page labeled “Switch out of S mode” or similar, select Get and follow any on-screen confirmation.
Before you switch out of S mode
S mode limits app installation to apps from Microsoft Store. Leaving it allows you to install apps from outside the Store, but choose installers from the software maker or another source you trust.
Windows 11 S mode is available only with Windows 11 Home. Windows 10 Pro, Enterprise, or Education devices in S mode must leave S mode before upgrading to Windows 11. Check your edition and version before following the steps.
Microsoft says switching is free and one-way. You do not need to buy Windows Pro just to leave S mode. Contact your school or employer’s administrator if the device is managed and the switch is blocked; do not try to bypass an organization’s controls.

How to switch out of S mode in Windows 11
- Open Settings > System > Activation.
- Under Switch to Windows 11 Pro, select Go to the Store.
- On the Microsoft Store page labeled Switch out of S mode or similar, select Get.
- Follow any on-screen confirmation and wait for Microsoft Store to confirm the switch.
After the switch is confirmed, you can install compatible apps from outside Microsoft Store. The “Switch to Windows 11 Pro” label links to the S mode switch flow; it does not itself upgrade Windows Home to Pro.
How to switch out of S mode in Windows 10
- Open Settings > Update & Security > Activation.
- Under Switch to Windows 10 Home or Switch to Windows 10 Pro, select Go to the Store.
- On the Microsoft Store page labeled Switch out of S mode or similar, select Get.
- Follow any on-screen confirmation and wait for Microsoft Store to confirm the switch.
Do not select Upgrade your edition of Windows for this task. Microsoft says that is a separate process and keeps the device in S mode. Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. The PC continues to work, but under Microsoft’s standard support policy it no longer receives free Windows Update software updates or security fixes, or technical assistance. See Microsoft’s current support guidance for your situation.

What changes after leaving S mode?
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Does it cost anything? | No. Microsoft says there is no charge to switch out of S mode. |
| Can you turn S mode back on? | No. The switch is one-way through the normal S mode controls. |
| Does it upgrade Windows Home to Pro? | No. Leaving S mode is separate from upgrading the Windows edition. |
| Can you install apps outside Microsoft Store? | Yes, after the switch is confirmed. Choose installers from sources you trust. |
| Will every app, driver, or peripheral work? | No. Compatibility depends on the app and device. On Qualcomm Snapdragon PCs, check with the software or hardware maker; required peripheral drivers must support the device. |
“Go to the Store” is missing or blocked
First check that Windows identifies the device as being in S mode and that you are using the Settings path for your Windows version. The Store page name may vary. If the device belongs to a school or employer, an administrator may have configured it to stay in S mode. Contact the administrator rather than trying to bypass the restriction.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Choosing “Upgrade your edition of Windows”: This is separate from switching out of S mode and, according to Microsoft, keeps the device in S mode.
- Assuming the switch costs money: Microsoft provides the S mode switch at no charge; a separate Windows edition upgrade is a different transaction.
- Assuming you can switch back: The change is one-way through the normal S mode controls.
- Ignoring app or driver compatibility: Leaving S mode does not guarantee that every app, driver, or peripheral will work, especially on Snapdragon PCs. Check with the maker.
- Trying to bypass organization controls: Ask the school or employer administrator to explain the approved process.
