You can switch carriers on an eSIM-only iPhone without a physical SIM, but first check that the phone is unlocked and that the new carrier supports eSIM for your exact iPhone model, plan, and region. If you want to keep your number, arrange the transfer with the new carrier; then activate its eSIM using the method it provides.

Before switching: check the iPhone and carrier

Check whether the iPhone is unlocked

On the iPhone, go to Settings > General > About and find the carrier or network lock field. “No SIM restrictions” means the iPhone is unlocked. If it is locked, ask your current carrier to unlock it. Apple says only the current carrier can do this—not Apple—and processing may take a few days. See Apple’s instructions for checking and unlocking an iPhone.

Confirm eSIM support for your exact situation

Before signing up, ask the prospective carrier whether it supports eSIM for your specific iPhone model and plan in your country or region. eSIM availability and features can vary by carrier, device, and location. Apple’s wireless-carrier feature list can help you check carrier support, but confirm plan-specific eligibility directly with the carrier. Apple’s eSIM setup guidance also explains that availability depends on the network, model, and location.

If you want to keep your number

Ask the new carrier for its number-transfer instructions before starting activation. Number-porting requirements, account details, and timing depend on the carrier and jurisdiction; there is no single set of steps that applies everywhere. Follow the new carrier’s instructions and wait for its confirmation that the transfer is complete.

#1 Best Overall
Apple iPhone 17 Pro, US Version, 512GB, eSIM, Silver- Unlocked (Renewed)
  • This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
  • Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
  • When you receive the phone, insert a SIM card from a compatible carrier. Then, turn it on, connect to Wi-Fi, and follow the on screen prompts to activate service.
  • The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charger and charging cable.
  • Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.

Do not assume the old and new phones can both use the same number throughout a transfer. In Apple’s eSIM Quick Transfer process between iPhones, the number stops working on the previous iPhone once the transfer completes. That specific behavior should not be assumed for every carrier’s porting workflow.

Activate the new carrier’s eSIM

Your new carrier determines which activation method is available. It may assign an eSIM to your iPhone, or provide a transfer option, QR code, carrier app or link, or manual activation details. An internet connection is generally needed, though Apple notes limited regional exceptions.

Apple iPhone 17, US Version, 256GB, eSIM, Mist Blue for AT&T (Renewed)
  • This device is locked to AT&T only and not compatible with any other carrier.
  1. Get the carrier’s activation instructions. Confirm the method it supports for your device and plan; do not assume every method is available.
  2. Open the eSIM setup options. On an iPhone that is already set up, go to Settings > Cellular > Set Up Cellular or Add eSIM.
  3. Choose the option your carrier provided. Follow the on-screen steps for its assigned eSIM, Quick Transfer, QR code, app or link, or manual details.
  4. Complete the carrier’s activation and confirmation steps. Check with the carrier if activation does not finish or if you are unsure whether the new line is active.

Apple’s eSIM setup guide describes these activation routes. If your previous phone is not an iPhone, contact the carrier for transfer instructions; methods for moving an eSIM from a non-Apple device vary.

If the eSIM will not activate

  • The phone is locked: Check Settings > General > About for “No SIM restrictions.” If it does not appear, contact the current carrier about unlocking before trying a different carrier’s eSIM.
  • No activation option appears: Ask the new carrier which method it supports for your model and region. The available methods differ by carrier.
  • You are transferring from a non-iPhone: Get device-specific instructions from the carrier rather than assuming Apple’s iPhone-to-iPhone transfer steps apply.

Do not delete an existing eSIM as a troubleshooting shortcut unless your carrier tells you to. Confirm with the carrier what to do before removing a plan.
