In the UK, contact the broadband provider you want to join and ask it to start One Touch Switch. Your connection is not guaranteed to remain live throughout: Ofcom says a service loss during a switch should not last longer than one working day. If even a short outage would cause problems, prepare a mobile backup before the changeover.
How to switch broadband providers
- Choose the new provider. Check availability at your exact address, then ask the provider how it will handle One Touch Switch. The new provider normally starts the process and asks for details such as your address, current provider and the services you want to move. Ofcom’s switching guide explains the process.
- Review the information from your current provider. Before confirming, check the proposed switch date, any early termination charge, and what will happen to your email address, landline, TV or other bundled services.
- Confirm installation and equipment arrangements. Ask whether the new service uses a different network, needs an engineer visit or requires new equipment. Find out when the router will arrive and when to connect it.
- Decide whether you need a backup. If an outage would disrupt work, study or essential services, check mobile coverage at home and the data limits on your mobile plan before relying on a hotspot or buying a mobile broadband router.
- Follow the provider’s activation instructions. When the new service goes live, connect household devices to the new Wi-Fi and test the connection. If the new router allows it, using the old Wi-Fi network name and password can reduce the number of devices you need to set up again; keep the password strong.
Will your internet stay connected during the switch?
Not necessarily. Ofcom says any loss of service during a switch should not last longer than one working day. That is a regulated limit, not a promise that there will be no interruption. Ofcom identifies compensation in specified cases, including a loss lasting longer than one working day or a missed confirmed service or installation appointment. How to prepare a temporary connection
A backup is optional, not a requirement for One Touch Switch. The right choice depends on how many devices need access and how much data you expect to use. Broadband.co.uk’s mobile broadband guide describes phone hotspotting and dedicated mobile broadband as options; neither establishes which network or device will work well at your address.
- Phone hotspot: Useful for a short interruption or light use without buying a separate router. Check your plan’s data allowance and whether your phone gets a reliable signal where you will use it.
- 4G/5G mobile broadband router: Can connect more devices or serve as a temporary home connection. Check coverage at the property, data limits and any excess charges before relying on a plan or purchasing equipment.
What to check before confirming the switch
Contract charges and notice
If you are still within a minimum contract term, leaving early may trigger an early termination charge. Under One Touch Switch, your current provider must tell you about charges before the switch. This is separate from notice-period billing: when you use the prescribed switching process, the old provider must not charge for a notice period after the switchover date.

Email and bundled services
Ask whether an email address supplied by your current provider will be affected, and check what happens to any landline, TV or other services in a bundle. Some services may not transfer automatically or may need separate arrangements.
Cooling-off period
Ofcom says you may cancel an order within 14 calendar days. If service has already started, you may still owe for service used and installation costs. Cancelling does not automatically reinstate your old service, so confirm the consequences with both providers before relying on that as a fallback.

Can you overlap the old and new broadband?
Yes, but an overlap is a self-managed switch rather than One Touch Switch. Tell the new provider you want to arrange the change yourself, and separately coordinate cancellation with your current provider. This can help you avoid cancelling the old service before the new one is ready, but a delay may mean changing the cancellation date and paying for both services at once.

Verify current prices and terms directly with the provider. Ofcom notes that customers may be able to save by switching when out of contract, but the best option depends on the household’s needs and available offers.
