You can switch between Meta AI and ChatGPT without rebuilding everything from memory, but don’t expect one service to import the other’s chat history. The official documentation describes service-specific exports and context tools—not a direct Meta AI ↔ ChatGPT migration. Save the useful parts of your workflow—project facts, preferences, source files, and reusable prompts—and set them up in the assistant you want to use next.
What transfers—and what does not
ChatGPT and Meta AI each document ways to access or export information within their own services. The available official instructions do not establish a feature for importing Meta AI history into ChatGPT, or ChatGPT history into Meta AI. Treat an export as an archive you can review, not as a promise that old conversations will appear as native chats in the other assistant.
For a practical handoff, carry forward the context that helps you do future work: project requirements, preferences, trusted source documents, prompt templates, and examples of the output you want. Keep the original files separately. A short, organized brief is easier to reuse than a large history dump.
Save what you need before leaving
Export ChatGPT data
- In ChatGPT, open Settings > Data controls > Export data, or request an export through the OpenAI Privacy Portal.
- When the export is ready, download the ZIP file and inspect it to confirm it contains the conversations and account data you need. OpenAI says the ZIP includes chat history and other relevant account data. The download link expires 24 hours after it is sent, and preparing an export can take up to seven days.
- Keep the archive somewhere secure. OpenAI notes that downloaded data can contain sensitive account information. Review it before sharing or uploading it to another service.
Self-service exports are not available for ChatGPT Business, Enterprise, and Healthcare workspaces. Eligibility in Edu depends on the user’s role and workspace settings. An export cannot restore chats that have already been deleted. Check the current eligibility and steps in OpenAI’s export instructions.

Download Meta AI history from WhatsApp
- Open the Meta AI chat in WhatsApp and go to Chat history.
- Select the conversation you want to download.
- Send
/download-all-ai-infoin the chat and follow the link you receive.
This route is specifically documented for Meta AI in WhatsApp; it should not be assumed to cover Meta AI in other apps or on the web. WhatsApp says you cannot request or download this history after deleting the Meta AI chat or your WhatsApp account. See WhatsApp’s Meta AI history instructions.
Build a portable workflow brief
After reviewing the archive, extract only information that will improve future work. Create a plain-language brief and keep the original source files in a separate folder. For example:

- Project: What you are working on, its goal, audience, constraints, and current status.
- Preferences: Tone, level of detail, spelling conventions, formatting, or approaches to avoid.
- Reusable instructions: Prompts or process steps that reliably produce useful results.
- Sources and files: The documents, links, data, and their relevant dates—not just an AI-generated summary of them.
- Open questions: Decisions still needed, assumptions to verify, and next actions.
Do not treat an old transcript as an authoritative record by default. Check important facts against the original files and sources, and remove personal or confidential details that are not needed for the new workflow.
Set up recurring work in ChatGPT
For repeatable work, a ChatGPT Project can group related chats, files, and project instructions. Where available, move eligible existing chats into the relevant Project and add the portable brief and original files. Project features and availability can depend on plan, region, platform, and workspace; consult OpenAI’s Projects guidance for current details.

Memory can use some relevant information across conversations, but it is not a complete archive: OpenAI states that “Memory does not retain every detail from every conversation.” Check the Memory settings for your account rather than assuming preferences or project facts will persist. For dependable handoffs, put essential instructions in the Project or brief and retain source files separately. Chat deletion and saved-memory management are distinct; see Memory in ChatGPT.
Recreate the workflow in the assistant you are switching to
Meta AI is available through multiple entry points, including the web, mobile app, and Meta’s social and messaging apps. Meta describes support for text, images, voice, files, and web information, though availability can vary by market and rollout. Before rebuilding, identify where you actually work and which capabilities matter; a workflow based on WhatsApp voice interactions may need a different setup from one based on web research or files. - Choose one low-stakes recurring task that represents your normal workflow.
- Provide the portable brief, relevant source files, and reusable prompt or instructions in the destination assistant.
- Use the entry point and task mode you expect to rely on—such as web, mobile, messaging, voice, or file handling, where available.
- Check whether the result has the needed context, sources, and output format. Correct missing or misunderstood instructions in the brief, then try another representative task.
This test is a manual setup check, not a history migration: the destination assistant will not automatically inherit the old service’s native conversation archive.

Temporary or private chat modes may not preserve a conversation for later use. OpenAI’s Data Controls documentation says Temporary Chats do not appear in chat history or create memories; see the Data Controls FAQ. Meta announced Incognito Chat for WhatsApp and the Meta AI app on May 13, 2026, describing chats as not saved and messages as disappearing by default, while saying rollout would continue over the coming months. That announcement does not establish that the feature is available to every user, so check your app. Read Meta’s Incognito Chat announcement.

Before transferring any export or source file, review what it contains and the destination service’s settings and policies. Keep only the material needed for the workflow, protect the local archive, and manage saved memories or data controls separately from conversation exports.
