You cannot currently switch a personal Facebook account back to the old desktop layout. Facebook no longer offers a supported Classic Mode toggle, and there is no verified URL parameter or browser command that restores it. You can adjust feed preferences or try Facebook’s lightweight websites, but neither brings back the pre-2020 design.
Can you switch Facebook back to the old layout?
No. Facebook does not currently offer a supported Classic Facebook or Switch to Classic Facebook setting for personal profiles. The current guidance says there is no verified UI path for reverting to the pre-2020 desktop layout. TechYorker’s current guide describes the toggle as removed.
Facebook’s Help Center says users cannot retain the old settings design. The current settings area uses Settings and Privacy shortcuts, rather than the legacy settings presentation.
Many guides still describe a top-right account menu option called Switch to Classic Facebook. That was a historical option, not a current menu item for personal accounts.

What the old Classic Facebook procedure was
For historical reference, the 2020 procedure was:
- Open Facebook on a desktop browser.
- Click the account or drop-down arrow in the top-right corner.
- Select Switch to Classic Facebook.
- Choose Submit or Skip on the feedback screen.
Rick’s Daily Tips’ historical guide reports that Facebook planned to remove the option at the end of August 2020 and make the new layout permanent in September 2020. The documented button label was Switch to Classic Facebook. These steps are historical and will not work as a current rollback method.
Better current alternatives
1. Change the feed without changing the layout
Facebook’s feed controls can change which posts you see, but they do not recreate the old visual design.
- Open Facebook.
- Open your profile picture or account menu.
- Go to Settings & privacy, then Settings.
- Choose Feed.
- Open Feed Preferences, if available on your account.
Depending on your account and Facebook version, Feed Preferences may let you prioritize friends and Pages, unfollow or reconnect with accounts, reduce suggested content, or limit short-form video exposure. These controls affect feed content, not Facebook’s layout framework.
2. Use the Feeds tab
The default Home feed can include recommendations and algorithmically selected content. The Feeds tab offers a more controlled view of recent content from friends, Pages, groups, or favorites, depending on the options Facebook presents. It is an alternative feed view, not a Classic Facebook switch.
Look for Feeds in the left-side navigation on desktop or in the menu on mobile. You can also try facebook.com/?filter=all, though Facebook may change or redirect feed URLs.
3. Try Facebook’s lightweight websites
These addresses may offer a simpler experience, but neither restores the old desktop layout:
| Address | What it is | What it is not |
|---|---|---|
| https://m.facebook.com | A mobile-oriented web interface | The old desktop layout |
| https://mbasic.facebook.com | A basic, lightweight interface when available | An official Classic Mode switch |
mbasic.facebook.com may redirect to the main Facebook website, particularly in logged-in sessions and some Chromium-based browsers. Logging out or using a private window may reduce redirects, but does not guarantee access.
These are web addresses, not commands. There is no supported command-line syntax or browser command that restores Classic Facebook.

Why common fixes do not work
| Suggested fix | Why it does not restore the old layout |
|---|---|
| Clear the browser cache | It can remove stale local files but cannot override Facebook’s server-side layout assignment. |
| Delete Facebook cookies | It may change a session or what loads temporarily, but it cannot permanently re-enable a retired design. |
| Add a URL parameter | There is no verified, supported parameter that switches a personal account to Classic Facebook. |
| Change language or region | These are not dependable user-selectable rollback methods. |
| Install a browser extension | Extensions may hide or rearrange visible elements, but cannot restore removed menus or features and may break after an update. |
| Use Facebook Lite | It is a separate lightweight app experience, not the old desktop interface. |
What about the Facebook app?
The Facebook Android and iOS apps do not provide an official toggle for the old desktop-style layout. Opening Facebook in a mobile browser may show the mobile website, but it does not change the interface inside the app.
Facebook Lite, where available, is a separate lightweight app experience—not a return to the pre-2020 desktop design.
If the old view briefly appears
An old-looking page that appears briefly may be a temporary or cached interface. Facebook can replace it when its servers apply the account’s current layout assignment. Clearing cookies may delay a change, but does not permanently restore Classic Facebook.
Refreshing or signing in from another browser may change what you see during testing. If the page switches back to the current design, there is no reliable manual request that unlocks Classic Facebook.

Safety note about “old Facebook” tools
Be cautious with extensions, userscripts, desktop programs, or websites that promise a classic layout in exchange for your Facebook password. Cosmetic tools cannot recreate Facebook’s retired backend and may collect browsing data or stop working after Facebook changes its code. Do not give your login details to an unofficial layout-restoration service.
If you already installed a tool you do not trust, remove it, change your Facebook password, review active sessions under Settings & privacy → Settings → Accounts Center → Password and security, and enable two-factor authentication.
Quick answer
There is no current Facebook Classic Mode for personal accounts and no supported way to switch back to the pre-2020 desktop layout. For a simpler experience, adjust Feed Preferences, use Feeds, or try the lightweight mobile web addresses—treat them as alternatives, not a restoration.

Can I restore old Facebook by clearing cookies?
No. Clearing cookies can remove local session data or temporarily alter what loads, but Facebook’s layout assignment is server-side. It will not permanently restore the old design.
Is there a URL to force Facebook Classic Mode?
No supported URL parameter or browser command is documented for restoring Classic Facebook. The lightweight addresses m.facebook.com and mbasic.facebook.com are alternatives, not Classic Mode.
Does Facebook Lite have the old layout?
No. Facebook Lite is a separate lightweight app experience; it does not restore the old desktop Facebook interface.
Can browser extensions bring back the original Facebook?
They may hide or rearrange visible elements, but they cannot restore Facebook’s removed menus, features, or original layout system. They may also break after Facebook updates.

The Bottom Line
You cannot currently switch a personal Facebook account back to the old desktop layout. The documented Switch to Classic Facebook menu belonged to the 2020 interface and was removed. Feed Preferences, Feeds, and Facebook’s lightweight mobile web addresses can offer alternatives, but they do not restore the retired design.
