Support both the person living with Alzheimer’s and their caregiver with patient communication, specific practical help, planned respite, and clear care handoffs. Needs and abilities can change, so revisit the plan over time and check local services, costs, and coverage with providers and the care team.
How do I support someone with Alzheimer’s?
Make interaction easier without taking control away. Alzheimer’s can affect finding and understanding words, attention during long conversations, organizing thoughts, and filtering background noise. A person who learned English as a second language may find it harder to use English and return to their first language. If they are aware of memory changes, listen with empathy and without judgment.
Make conversation easier and preserve dignity
- Use the person’s name, make eye contact if comfortable, and speak in a warm, matter-of-fact tone.
- Reduce competing noise and give extra time for an answer. The National Institute on Aging advises: “Allow more time for the person to respond. Be patient and try not to interrupt.”
- Ask a yes-or-no question or offer two clear choices instead of a broad question. For example, try “Do you want fish or chicken for dinner?” rather than “What do you want for dinner?” Follow the person’s preferences.
- If they do not understand, try different words instead of repeating the same sentence. Notice facial expressions and body language as well as spoken answers.
- Do not use baby talk, interrupt, or speak about the person as if they are not present. A gentle touch or holding hands may be reassuring if welcome.
- If the person becomes upset, stay patient; a familiar snack or walk may offer a gentle change of focus. If you feel frustrated, pause and take time to calm down.
These suggestions come from the NIA’s communication guidance, reviewed July 11, 2024. Adjust them to the person rather than expecting one approach to work in every situation.
How can I help an Alzheimer’s caregiver?
Ask what would make today easier, then offer one concrete task you can reliably do. A specific offer is easier to accept and plan around than “Let me know if you need anything.”

The NIA recommends building a support network that may include family, friends, community or faith groups, and caregiver support groups. Education and peer support can also help caregivers understand responsibilities and find resources. The Alzheimer’s Association’s volunteer-led, locally delivered Empowered Caregiver series covers building a support team and managing stress, supporting independence, communicating effectively, responding to dementia-related behavior, and exploring future care and support services. Check whether a session is available in your area and whether its format and topics suit the current need.
How can a caregiver get a break?
Respite is temporary care that gives a caregiver time away while the person continues to receive care. The NIA describes options ranging from a few hours to several weeks, at home, in a health-care facility, or at an adult day center. The right choice depends on the person’s supervision needs and comfort, the schedule, local availability, staff, transportation, activities, and cost.

| Option | What it may involve | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| In-home help | Companion care or personal care in the person’s home. | Care tasks, hours, staff training and qualifications, references if hiring independently, and fees. |
| Adult day services | A supervised daytime setting with planned activities; some centers provide meals and transportation. | Hours, transportation, activities, supervision, the person’s adjustment to the setting, and cost. |
| Short residential stay | A supervised stay in a long-term-care community. | Care and supervision available, length of stay, staff qualifications, adjustment to a new setting, and payment coverage. |
Descriptions and costs vary by provider and location. The Alzheimer’s Association notes that overnight stays are usually not covered by insurance or Medicare. The NIA says fees may be hourly or charged by day or week; Medicare respite related to hospice has specific conditions, Medicaid assistance may be possible, most private insurance plans do not cover respite, and some long-term-care plans may help. Confirm current prices, eligibility, and coverage directly with the provider and relevant payer.

How do I make care handoffs safer?
Keep essential information together where a substitute caregiver can find it quickly. The Alzheimer’s Association recommends having medical-team contact details and a current medication list readily accessible, including each medication’s dose and frequency. Tell backup helpers where the information is and how to reach the caregiver if questions arise.
A simple folder or log can make those details easier to locate; the important thing is that the information stays current and accessible to the people providing care. The Association’s respite planning guidance recommends discussing backup help with trusted family, friends, or neighbors.

How should we review safety and support needs?
Review the home and care arrangement as the person’s abilities and behavior change. The NIA notes that someone may forget to turn off an oven or faucet, or how to use a phone in an emergency. Walk through the home room by room, consider risks relevant to the person’s current situation, and raise specific concerns with the care team rather than applying every precaution indiscriminately.
Support approaches can also change. The Alzheimer’s Association’s 2026 Facts and Figures report describes a review identifying 44 interventions that benefited people living with dementia as well as caregivers, but says the evidence does not consistently establish which intervention types help caregivers. Its discussion of more than 60 meta-analyses and systematic reviews notes possible positive effects on depression and other caregiver well-being measures, while also describing difficulty establishing what works and why. These findings do not identify one best intervention for every family. Education, help managing dementia-related symptoms, social support, and respite are among the approaches discussed; useful support tends to involve caregivers actively, adapt as needs change, and consider both the caregiver and the person living with dementia.
