The app is preinstalled in Windows 11, and it lets you build desktop flows from ready-made actions or record mouse and keyboard steps. You could use a flow to organize files, copy information into a form, or convert files in a batch; whether a particular flow works depends on the app or website it interacts with.
Here’s how to create a small flow, test it safely, and choose a way to launch it.
What Power Automate for desktop can do
Power Automate for desktop is the Windows application; a desktop flow is the automation you create in it. Microsoft describes the app as preinstalled in Windows 11 and designed for building automations with little or no code. Its examples include extracting website prices into Excel, filling forms, organizing or backing up files, and converting files. These are possible workflows, not guarantees that every site or application will behave reliably.
Microsoft Learn’s Windows 11 getting-started guide covers the built-in app, while its introduction to desktop flows explains the basics. A flow can save you from repeating a sequence of actions, but it does not improve PC benchmark performance or make Windows itself faster.

How to create your first desktop flow
Start with a routine task that has a clear beginning and end. For a first try, choose something reversible—such as moving a few test files into a folder—rather than a task that could submit a payment, delete important data, or change a live account.
- Open the app: Select Start, search for Power Automate, and open Power Automate for desktop. Microsoft’s Windows 11 overview describes accessing automation from the Start menu.
- Create a desktop flow: In the app, choose the option to create a new flow and give it a name that describes its task.
- Choose how to build it: Add actions in the flow designer to spell out each step, or use the recorder to capture mouse and keyboard activity as a starting point. The action-based approach makes the steps explicit; a recording captures what you do. Neither approach guarantees a flow will continue to work if an application changes.
- Review the steps: Check what each action reads, changes, or submits. Adjust the flow so it uses test files or sample data before you point it at important files or accounts.
- Run it manually: Start the flow from Power Automate for desktop and observe each step. If it does something unexpected, stop it and revise the relevant action before trying again.

Choose how to launch a working flow
Once a flow works when started in the app, choose a launch method that fits how and when you need it.

For external invocation, keep the confirmation prompt enabled unless you have a clear reason to disable it and understand what can launch the flow. Microsoft warns: “Disabling the confirmation dialog poses security threats because you could run without notice a questionable flow shared by a malicious actor.” See Microsoft’s guidance for running desktop flows via URL or shortcuts for the launch details.

Windows 11 editions, cloud triggers, and requirements
Windows 11 Home users can create desktop flows and monitor them in the Power Automate portal, but Microsoft says Home does not support triggering desktop flows from the cloud. Cloud-triggered automation and other premium capabilities have separate account and licensing considerations; the available sources do not establish a complete entitlement matrix, so check Microsoft’s current account information for the specific feature you need.
Microsoft’s 2026 Power Automate for desktop prerequisites and limitations list these requirements for a single-user session with the app open. They exclude the resources used by the applications your flow operates:

These are requirements for running the automation app, not evidence that it will speed up your computer. A flow’s run time also depends on the applications and work involved, and those applications’ resource needs are outside the figures above.
