Structure pages to answer a real reader’s question clearly, make their information accessible to search engines, and support important claims with evidence. Google says there are no extra requirements or special optimizations for appearing in AI Overviews or AI Mode—but eligibility does not guarantee that Google will crawl, index, or show a page.

How should you structure a page for AI Overviews?

Use the same foundations that make a page useful in ordinary search: a clear topic, readable organization, accessible information, accurate technical implementation, and material that adds value beyond repeating what is already widely available. Google’s guidance is explicit: “There are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, nor other special optimizations necessary.” Google Search Central’s AI features guidance also explains that meeting its requirements does not guarantee crawling, indexing, or serving.

Give the page one clear job

Center the URL and page on a primary subject. State the answer and supporting facts directly instead of making readers infer them from scattered details or surrounding context. Bing’s Webmaster Guidelines similarly emphasize focused URLs, clear structure, and facts that can be independently verified.

Organize information for people

Group related information into sections and use descriptive headings in a logical hierarchy. Keep paragraphs focused, and use lists or tables when they make steps, requirements, or comparisons easier to scan. Google says readers generally appreciate paragraphs, sections, and headings that provide a clear structure; Bing recommends logical H1–H6 hierarchy and semantic HTML.

Use headings to describe the section that follows, not to insert every possible search phrase. A well-organized page helps visitors navigate and helps systems understand how its parts relate, without requiring a special format for AI.

What information should be visible and verifiable?

Make the substance available as text

Put the page’s important explanation in accessible text rather than hiding its main value in an image, video, or other media alone. Add high-quality images or video when they genuinely help explain the subject. Google’s AI-feature guidance includes textual availability and useful media among established SEO practices.

Support claims readers may want to check

Be specific about facts, definitions, and the evidence behind them. Name relevant entities consistently, distinguish established facts from uncertainty, and link to authoritative sources where appropriate. Where readers expect it, make authorship clear and explain relevant expertise or first-hand experience. Google recommends helpful, reliable, people-first content; its guidance on creating helpful, reliable, people-first content warns against producing large amounts of low-value material chiefly for search engines.

The practical test is whether the page contributes something useful: original knowledge, evidence, expert explanation, or relevant experience. Rewording common information without adding meaningful value gives readers little reason to choose the page as a source.

How do you make a page discoverable and technically eligible?

  1. Check crawl access. Make sure your site does not block the page from being crawled, and review the applicable Google Search technical requirements.
  2. Help search engines find important pages. Link to them from relevant pages on your site so visitors and crawlers can navigate to them.
  3. Check indexing and performance. Use Google Search Console to diagnose technical issues and review search performance.
  4. Keep the page accurate. Update information when the subject changes and make sure any markup describes what visitors can actually see.

These checks address access and eligibility, not a promise of inclusion. Google says AI Overviews do not appear for every query, and that a page may not be crawled, indexed, or served even when it meets requirements and best practices. AI Overviews can summarize more complicated questions and provide links for further exploration; AI Mode supports more nuanced exploration, reasoning, and comparisons. Google also notes that these features may use query fan-out, so results and links can vary.

Do you need special schema markup for AI search?

No special schema is required to appear in Google’s generative AI search features. Use structured data where it is useful as part of ordinary SEO, but make sure it accurately matches visible page content. Google says structured data should reflect what readers can see; accurate markup may support applicable rich-result eligibility, but it is not an AI citation switch. Bing likewise cautions that structured data does not guarantee visibility or grounding traffic.

Do not add markup that describes content absent from the page, and do not treat schema as a substitute for clear writing or crawlable content. The benefit is accurate machine-readable description where relevant—not guaranteed exposure in an answer.

Does content need to be chunked for answer engines?

No. Google sets no ideal page length and does not require breaking every page into tiny chunks. Choose length and organization according to the subject and what readers need to accomplish. Use concise sections when they aid navigation, but keep connected explanations together when splitting them would make the answer harder to follow.

Likewise, do not rewrite everything in a special “AI style” or create separate pages for every wording of a similar question. Google says its systems understand synonyms and general meaning. Producing many pages primarily to manipulate search or generative responses can run afoul of its scaled content abuse policy.

Should you publish an llms.txt file?

Not for Google Search visibility or ranking. Google says it does not use llms.txt files for those purposes; maintaining one for other systems that use it neither helps nor harms Google Search visibility. Treat it as an optional file for those other systems, not a requirement for AI Overviews.

How can you measure visibility and improve a page?

Use Search Console to review search performance and diagnose technical problems. Google says appearances in AI features are included in overall Search Console web performance reporting, and its current guide also points to a Generative AI performance report. Use the reports to observe how pages are appearing, then improve the actual page where the evidence points to a content or technical issue. Reporting can inform decisions, but it does not guarantee future inclusion.

There is no established special optimization system with proven ranking advantages over these fundamentals. Judge implementation choices by whether they improve reader usefulness, factual verifiability, crawl and index eligibility, accessibility, and maintenance—not by promises of AI citations.
