You can stress-test your portfolio for an AI-driven market correction by mapping your underlying exposures, applying clearly labeled hypothetical market shocks to each holding, and measuring the estimated dollar loss against the goals the portfolio serves. The exercise can reveal concentration and weak points; it cannot predict whether a correction will happen or tell you what to buy or sell.
Why include an AI-driven correction in a portfolio stress test?
Official financial bodies have described AI-related valuation concerns as one possible source of market risk—not as evidence that prices are misvalued or that a correction is imminent. The Federal Reserve’s May 2026 Financial Stability Report records market participants’ concerns about AI-related equity valuations, debt-financed capital expenditure and potential labor-market effects, including the possibility that valuation concerns could trigger a correction in risk assets.
In a 31 August 2026 statement, Financial Stability Board Chair Andrew Bailey warned that leverage, high valuations, market concentration and AI-related optimism could amplify a future correction. The IMF’s April 2026 Global Financial Stability Report also identifies stretched valuations and concentration—particularly among AI-related firms—as equity-market downside risks. These points make AI-sensitive repricing a plausible scenario to examine, not a forecast of its timing or severity.
How to map your portfolio’s underlying exposures
Start with all investment accounts that support the goal you are testing. A portfolio can be more concentrated than its number of funds or stocks suggests: several funds may hold many of the same large companies, or different holdings may depend on the same sector or market conditions.

- Define the goal and time horizon. Note what the money is for, when you expect to need it, and what loss you believe you could tolerate. The SEC’s asset allocation and diversification guidance explains that allocation depends on an investor’s time horizon and risk tolerance.
- List holdings across accounts. Record each position and its current dollar value. Include stocks, bonds, cash and funds rather than assessing a single account in isolation.
- Look through funds to their holdings. Check the top underlying positions in mutual funds and ETFs, then note companies or sectors that recur across multiple funds. The SEC cautions that narrowly focused funds may not provide diversification and recommends checking fund holdings.
- Group exposures in more than one way. Classify holdings by asset class, sector, geography and large underlying company exposures. This can show whether apparent diversification relies on a small set of related companies or on equities generally.
A simple worksheet can capture the inputs:
| Holding or exposure | Current value | Asset class / sector | Underlying overlap | Scenario shock | Estimated dollar change |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Example: a broad equity fund | Enter your value | Enter its classifications | List notable repeated holdings | Enter the assumed change | Calculate from value and shock |
| Example: a bond fund | Enter your value | Enter its classifications | List relevant exposures | Enter the assumed change | Calculate from value and shock |
Build several explicit hypothetical scenarios
Write down each assumption before calculating. A useful set includes a broad equity decline, a sharper repricing for AI-sensitive or concentrated technology holdings, and a severe recession scenario that also considers interest rates and credit conditions. The shocks are your chosen hypothetical inputs, not predictions. The cited official sources do not prescribe a standard template or household shock size.
| Scenario | Breadth | Assumptions to specify | What it helps examine |
|---|---|---|---|
| Broad equity decline | Equities across the market | Price decline and the period over which it occurs | How much the portfolio depends on equity markets overall |
| AI-sensitive repricing | AI-related or concentrated technology exposures fall more than other equities | Separate assumed shocks for the more-exposed holdings and the rest of equities | Whether overlapping or concentrated holdings magnify an AI-related sell-off |
| Severe recession | Potentially broad market and economic spillovers | Equity prices, rates, credit conditions and, if relevant to your finances, employment or income assumptions | How a simultaneous market and economic shock could affect the goal |
For a reference point on severity—not a household recommendation—the Federal Reserve’s 2026 supervisory stress-test scenario assumes equity prices fall about 58 percent over its first three quarters, with the VIX reaching a hypothetical peak of 72 percent in the second quarter. Those are parameters in a severely adverse scenario for supervised banks. They are not forecasts, recommended assumptions for a personal portfolio, or estimates of what an individual investor should expect.

Estimate the dollar effect holding by holding
For each position, apply the shock assigned to that exposure. A simplified calculation is:
Estimated dollar change = current holding value × assumed percentage change

For a $10,000 holding assigned a hypothetical 20 percent decline, the estimated change is $10,000 × −0.20, or −$2,000. This is an illustration of the calculation, not a proposed shock or a prediction. Repeat the calculation for each position under each scenario, then add the dollar changes to estimate the portfolio-wide effect. Compare the estimated loss with the portfolio’s starting value and the goal it supports.

- Breadth: Does the shock affect only AI-sensitive holdings, or the full equity market?
- Severity: How large is each assumed price change?
- Speed: Does the assumed decline occur quickly or over a longer period?
- Spillovers: Does the scenario also change rates, credit spreads or employment and income assumptions?
- Portfolio impact: What is the estimated dollar loss, and could it threaten the goal or time horizon?
This calculation is a simplified scenario estimate. Securities can respond differently from the assumptions, relationships among assets can change during market stress, and the result does not predict actual returns.

Ask whether the modeled loss could compromise a near-term spending need or make you abandon the plan. If the allocation no longer seems consistent with the goal, time horizon or loss tolerance you identified, review it in that context. A stress test identifies vulnerabilities; it does not establish a one-size-fits-all allocation or require a particular trade.

If you decide to rebalance, the SEC describes it as bringing a portfolio back toward its original allocation. Investors may use a calendar-based schedule or rebalance when allocations cross chosen thresholds. Transactions can trigger fees or tax consequences, so account for those before acting.
