To play games installed on your Xbox Series X|S or Xbox One away from the TV, use Xbox Remote Play: enable remote features on the console, then open xbox.com/remoteplay in a supported browser and connect a controller. Xbox lists Android 6.0 or later, iOS 15.1 or later, and a connection using 5 GHz Wi-Fi or mobile data at 10 Mbps down. Remote Play streams from your own console; Xbox Cloud Gaming is a separate service that streams eligible games from Xbox.

What you need for Xbox Remote Play

Remote Play sends a game installed on your own Xbox to another device. Xbox supports Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One consoles with remote features enabled. It does not mean that the game is running on your phone or handheld, and it is not the same as Xbox Cloud Gaming.

  • Console: Xbox Series X|S or Xbox One, with remote features enabled.
  • Phone or tablet: Xbox lists Android 6.0 or later and iOS 15.1 or later for compatible mobile access. Use a supported web browser.
  • Account: A Microsoft account with the Xbox profile used for the console.
  • Controller: Xbox requires a supported Bluetooth controller for mobile play.
  • Network: Xbox lists 5 GHz Wi-Fi or mobile data at 10 Mbps down. Mobile data charges may apply.

These are Xbox’s published compatibility and connection guidelines, not a promise of a particular picture quality, response time, or uninterrupted session. Actual performance depends on the networks involved.

How to stream from your Xbox to a phone

  1. Enable remote features on the console. On the Xbox, open Settings > Devices & connections > Remote features and turn on remote features. Menu names can change with Xbox updates; if the path differs, search Settings for “Remote features.”
  2. Check your phone and browser. Confirm the device meets Xbox’s listed Android or iOS minimum and that you can use a supported browser.
  3. Open Xbox Remote Play. In the browser, go to xbox.com/remoteplay and sign in with the Microsoft account associated with your Xbox profile.
  4. Connect a controller. Pair a supported Bluetooth controller with the phone, then follow the page’s prompts to connect to your console and start a game installed on it.
  5. Choose your network. Prefer 5 GHz Wi-Fi where available. Xbox also lists mobile data at 10 Mbps down; check your data allowance and carrier charges before playing away from Wi-Fi.

Xbox announced browser-based access on April 16, 2025, and said direct access to Remote Play from the Xbox mobile app would no longer be available. The current setup route is the browser, not the app’s former Remote Play entry point. Xbox Wire’s announcement explains the change.

Choosing a controller for a phone

Xbox names the Xbox Wireless Controller and Backbone One as controller options. A standard Xbox Wireless Controller can pair over Bluetooth with a compatible phone. Backbone One is a phone-mounted controller option; Xbox describes its use with compatible USB-C iPhone or Android phones. Check the exact phone model and connector before buying or assuming compatibility. Xbox’s examples do not establish that every controller, phone, or connector combination works.

If you already own a supported Bluetooth controller, you may not need a phone-mounted accessory. Whichever setup you use, mobile Remote Play requires supported controller input according to Xbox. See Xbox’s device information for its current product details.

Can you use Remote Play on a handheld?

Potentially, if the handheld can run a browser supported by Xbox and its controls work with the Remote Play session. Xbox describes Remote Play generally as available on browser-supported devices, but the published examples for handhelds do not prove that every model has Remote Play support or that its built-in controls will work as expected. Check the specific handheld’s browser compatibility and try the browser flow rather than relying on its support for another Xbox service.

That distinction matters for devices such as ROG Xbox Ally, ROG Xbox Ally X, Logitech G Cloud, Razer Edge, and Steam Deck. Xbox’s December 19, 2025 guide names the first four among devices for Xbox Cloud Gaming and says Steam Deck support for that cloud service is in beta. Those statements concern Cloud Gaming, not a guarantee of Remote Play compatibility. Read Xbox Wire’s Cloud Gaming device guide.

Remote Play vs. Xbox Cloud Gaming

What differs Remote Play Xbox Cloud Gaming
Where the game runs Your Xbox Series X|S or Xbox One; the game is installed on your console. Xbox’s cloud service; you play eligible games offered there.
What you need A supported Xbox console with remote features enabled, a browser-supported device, and supported controller input for mobile play. A supported device and access to the cloud service and an eligible game; requirements depend on Xbox’s current offering.
Published connection figure Xbox lists 5 GHz Wi-Fi or mobile data at 10 Mbps down. Xbox Wire’s December 2025 guide recommends at least 20 Mbps for stable cloud gaming.
Handheld examples Xbox’s general browser-supported-device guidance does not establish compatibility for every named handheld. Xbox’s December 2025 guide names ROG Xbox Ally, ROG Xbox Ally X, Logitech G Cloud, and Razer Edge; it says Steam Deck support is in beta.

The two connection figures apply to different services and should not be treated as interchangeable. The Cloud Gaming figure is Xbox Wire’s recommendation for stable cloud gaming, not the Remote Play requirement. Check Xbox’s Cloud Gaming guide for current cloud-device and service details.

Subscriptions and game access

Xbox does not say that every Remote Play session requires an Xbox Game Pass subscription. Some games or online multiplayer may require a separate subscription, depending on the game and the way you play. Remote Play itself streams games installed on your console; Cloud Gaming has its own game eligibility and plan details. Check the current requirements for the specific game rather than assuming one subscription rule covers both services.

If Remote Play does not connect or play smoothly

  • The console does not appear: Confirm remote features are enabled and that you signed in with the Microsoft account tied to the Xbox profile on that console.
  • The controller does not respond: Check that it is paired to the phone over Bluetooth and is a supported controller. Xbox names its Xbox Wireless Controller and Backbone One as options.
  • The stream is unstable: Check the connection and try 5 GHz Wi-Fi if available. Xbox’s 10 Mbps down guidance is not a performance guarantee; network conditions can still affect play.
  • A handheld does not work: Verify browser support for that device and test the Remote Play browser page. Cloud Gaming support for a handheld does not by itself confirm Remote Play support.
  • Mobile data use is a concern: Xbox notes that mobile-data charges may apply. Check your carrier plan before streaming away from Wi-Fi.
