To stream to a custom RTMP destination, get the ingest URL and stream key from the destination, enter them under Settings > Stream in OBS using the destination’s required field format, configure a supported bitrate, then start the stream and confirm reception in the destination’s live-control page. Treat the key like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to publish to your channel or event.

What you need before connecting

  • An encoder such as OBS and a stable internet connection with enough upload capacity for your chosen video bitrate.
  • The destination’s current ingest URL and stream key or equivalent credential. These details are specific to the destination, account, or event; do not guess an address or reuse another event’s values.
  • The destination’s current guidance for protocol, port, key placement, bitrate, and supported formats. Custom destinations do not all use the same settings.

If the destination uses YouTube, retrieve its live-stream details in YouTube’s current live-control interface. For another service, use that service’s own encoder instructions. Interfaces and endpoint values can change.

Set up a custom destination in OBS

  1. Retrieve the ingest details. Create or select the live stream in the destination’s creator or live-control interface, then copy the ingest URL and stream key. Keep both private.
  2. Open the stream settings. In OBS, go to Settings > Stream, choose the custom streaming server option, and enter the server URL and stream key in their respective fields. OBS documents these as the custom-server fields.
  3. Follow the destination’s key format. Some setups expect the URL and key separately. Others require the key to be included in the URL or path. YouTube’s Live Streaming API documentation describes an ingestion URL and stream name that may be supplied separately or combined as STREAM_URL/STREAM_NAME. Use the format the destination specifies; do not append a key unless instructed.
  4. Set output to fit the connection and service. In OBS output settings, choose a video bitrate that is within the destination’s current limit and sustainable on your upload connection. OBS notes that bitrate depends on both connection capacity and service restrictions. Its guide, published 2021-08-25, gives 6000 kbps as a Twitch example; that dated example is not a universal setting or confirmation of Twitch’s current limit. Check the destination’s latest specifications.
  5. Start and verify the feed. Start streaming in OBS, then inspect the destination’s preview, ingest-health indicator, or live-control page. Confirm that video and audio arrive before treating the connection as ready for viewers.

Choose RTMP, RTMPS, or another ingest method

Use the protocol named by the destination. RTMPS is RTMP carried over a TLS-encrypted connection; it is not interchangeable with a plain RTMP endpoint. For YouTube, Google recommends RTMPS for ordinary content, particularly when low latency matters. Its documented RTMPS connection requires a valid YouTube RTMPS ingestion endpoint and application name, the rtmps protocol, TLS, and port 443.

Option When it fits What to check
RTMP When the destination supplies a plain RTMP endpoint and the encoder supports it. Use the exact host, path, port, and credential format the destination specifies. Do not substitute an RTMPS address or assume the secure endpoint uses the same port.
RTMPS When the destination offers a secure RTMP endpoint; YouTube recommends it for ordinary live content, especially low-latency use. For YouTube, verify the endpoint is RTMPS, the connection uses TLS, and port 443 is used.
HLS ingest For YouTube workflows involving HDR or codecs that RTMP does not support, if the encoder supports HLS. YouTube’s documented HLS stream URL begins with https, and the stream key is already incorporated into that URL for this workflow. Follow the HLS-specific instructions rather than entering a separate key by assumption.

Compatibility, security, and format needs matter more than choosing a protocol by name alone. Check that the encoder and destination both support the desired protocol and codec, and handle credentials exactly as the destination describes.

Protect the stream key

A stream key authorizes an encoder to publish to an account or stream. Twitch explicitly warns broadcasters never to share their key. Avoid exposing it in screenshots, public chat, support posts, or recordings of your settings. If it is exposed, refresh or reset it using the platform’s current process, then update the encoder. Twitch notes that refreshing a broadcaster’s own key does not refresh guest stream keys; manage authorized guest access separately.

Troubleshoot a custom RTMP connection

  • The destination receives no signal: Compare the URL’s protocol, hostname, path, and port with the destination’s current instructions. Check that the correct event’s key is in the correct field, and confirm the destination has an active stream selected.
  • The URL looks right but YouTube RTMPS reports a certificate or TLS error: Check that you used an rtmps endpoint rather than a plain RTMP endpoint. Confirm the connection uses port 443 and TLS.
  • TLS setup fails despite the correct URL and port: Inspect the encoder’s SSL diagnostics. YouTube’s guidance identifies Server Name Indication (SNI) as a detail to verify against the connected hostname.
  • The connection times out after connecting: One possible cause is sending cleartext RTMP to an endpoint expecting RTMPS. Recheck protocol selection and the endpoint supplied by the destination.
  • The connection starts but drops or the picture stutters: Reduce bitrate to a level your sustained upload can support, and make sure it remains within the destination’s current limits. Verify the selected protocol and format are supported by both encoder and destination.
  • The destination rejects the key: Re-copy the key from the correct stream or event and check whether its format requires a separate field or a URL/path combination. If the key may have been exposed, rotate it before trying again.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is an always-on YouTube stream made from uploaded videos, StreamNeo is a different option from configuring a custom RTMP encoder: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops the video from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. The same plan supports uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card; the monthly option is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo for details, or start the free day.
