You can stream PC games to Steam Frame over your home Wi-Fi, but Valve says the included wireless adapter’s direct connection tends to be less congested and more reliable. For the normal setup, connect and pair that adapter with your PC, then choose Stream on a game in the headset’s Steam Library.
Choose a connection: home Wi-Fi or the included adapter
Steam Frame supports streaming over your existing home Wi-Fi. Valve cautions that this path tends to be more congested and less reliable than the direct connection provided by the included wireless adapter. The adapter is a plug-and-play 6 GHz link between the headset and PC; Steam Frame’s dual radios let it use the adapter for streamed audio and visuals while the other radio connects to Wi-Fi. Valve also describes multi-link streaming that uses available headset connections with adaptive redundancy. Valve’s Steam Frame setup documentation and Steam Frame product page provide the connection details.

The official materials do not guarantee that a particular router, Wi-Fi generation, channel, or distance will match the adapter’s performance. A Wi-Fi 6E router is not established as a Steam Frame requirement.
Set up the included wireless adapter
- Plug the included adapter into the PC, preferably into a USB 3 port.
- Launch SteamVR and accept the prompt to install the adapter driver.
- Follow the pairing prompt. When the headset displays a pairing code, enter it on the PC.
- In the headset, open the Steam Library, select the PC game you want to play, and choose Stream.
Valve describes connecting directly to the PC from the VR dashboard as primarily a development option. For ordinary gameplay, use Stream on the game in the headset’s Steam Library. See Valve’s Steam Frame setup instructions for current steps.

If pairing or streaming does not work
- No pairing prompt: Valve’s setup instructions say to opt the PC Steam client into the Steam Beta Update and reboot if necessary. Confirm that the headset is signed into the same Steam account. Beta availability and instructions can change, so follow Valve’s current setup page rather than assuming a beta branch is always required.
- Choppy home Wi-Fi stream: Steam Support says simultaneous wireless traffic between the PC and router, and between the router and streaming device, can cause interference and choppiness. Reduce competing wireless traffic and, if possible, test closer to the access point. The proximity suggestion is general troubleshooting, not a Valve performance guarantee. Steam Support’s Steam Link network guidance recommends using 5 GHz rather than the more congested 2.4 GHz band.
- PC is also on Wi-Fi: Where practical, connect the gaming PC to the router with Ethernet. Steam Remote Play lists a wired PC-to-router connection, a Wi-Fi 5 router, and a 5 GHz channel in its published VR minimum requirements. That section names Meta Quest 2, 3, and Pro, not Steam Frame, so treat it as general Steam Link VR guidance—not a confirmed Steam Frame-specific requirement. Steam Remote Play VR requirements.
What Foveated Streaming does—and what its number means
Valve says Steam Frame’s Foveated Streaming optimizes detail where the user is looking and “typically offers over a 10x improvement in image quality and effective bandwidth.” This is Valve’s vendor-reported claim on its Steam Frame product page; the page does not specify a test protocol for that figure. It is not an independently established performance result or a guarantee for every network and game.
