OBS Studio cannot receive an iPad screen directly. You need to give OBS a video source first: a wired iPad feed through QuickTime on a Mac, an AirPlay receiver, or an HDMI capture card. The best method depends on whether you prioritize low latency, mobility, cost, or audio simplicity.

For most Mac users, a USB cable and QuickTime Player are the most dependable starting point. For Windows users, an HDMI capture card is usually the cleanest option.

Choose the right iPad-to-OBS method

Method Best for What you need Main limitation
QuickTime Player on Mac Low-latency wired streaming Mac, USB cable, QuickTime Player, OBS Requires a Mac and usually a wired connection
AirPlay receiver Wireless demonstrations and casual streams Compatible Mac or AirPlay receiver app More latency and possible network interruptions
HDMI capture card Windows, consoles, and production setups iPad HDMI adapter, HDMI cable, capture card Additional hardware; protected video may not appear
Third-party wireless receiver Wireless streaming to Windows AirPlay receiver software and a shared network Quality depends heavily on Wi-Fi and the receiver app

Before opening OBS, decide whether viewers need to hear the iPad. Screen video and iPad audio are separate problems: a method may mirror the picture while failing to deliver game or app audio to OBS.

Method 1: Stream an iPad to OBS with QuickTime Player on a Mac

This is generally the simplest wired setup. QuickTime displays the iPad as a live video window, and OBS captures that window.

  • The Anker Advantage: Join the 80 million+ powered by our leading technology.
  • Vivid Video: The HDMI adapter lets you connect to any TV or display with an HDMI port to stream video in up to 4K resolution.
  • Plug and Play: Instantly turn your laptop’s USB-C port into an HDMI port, with no installation necessary. This product does not support charging or Power Delivery (PD).
  • Premium Construction: A lightweight aluminum casing allows for greater heat dissipation, while the reinforced braided-nylon cable is designed to withstand the twists and tugs of daily use.
  • Compatibility: Supports USB-C DP Alt mode, USB4, and Thunderbolt connections.

1. Connect and trust the iPad

  1. Connect the iPad to the Mac with a USB cable.
  2. Unlock the iPad.
  3. If the iPad asks whether to trust the computer, tap Trust and enter the iPad passcode.
  4. Close any app or notification that you do not want visible on stream.

If the iPad does not appear later, try another cable or USB port, keep the iPad unlocked, and confirm that it is visible in Finder.

2. Open the iPad as a movie recording source

  1. Open QuickTime Player on the Mac.
  2. Choose File > New Movie Recording.
  3. When the recording window appears, click the small arrow beside the Record button.
  4. Under Camera, select the connected iPad.
  5. Under Microphone, choose the audio source you want. Select the iPad if it is offered and you want its audio routed through QuickTime.

You do not need to press Record. The live preview is enough. Leave this QuickTime window open while OBS captures it.

3. Add the QuickTime window to OBS

  1. Open OBS Studio and create or select a scene.
  2. In the Sources box, click +.
  3. Choose Window Capture.
  4. Name the source something clear, such as iPad screen, and click OK.
  5. Choose the QuickTime movie-recording window from the Window menu.
  6. Click OK.

In the OBS preview, drag the red handles to resize the iPad feed. Hold Option while dragging a handle on macOS if you need to crop an edge. To fit the source to the canvas without stretching it, right-click the source and choose Transform > Fit to Screen.

4. Add and check audio

Look at the OBS Audio Mixer while playing a sound on the iPad. If the meter moves, OBS is receiving the audio. If the picture works but the meter stays still, add an audio source separately:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. In Sources, click +.
  2. Choose Audio Input Capture if the iPad appears as an input device.
  3. Select the iPad or the audio device carrying its sound.
  4. Click OK, then watch the mixer for movement.

If QuickTime sends the iPad audio to the Mac but OBS does not capture it, use an audio-routing utility or capture the Mac’s output with an OBS-compatible audio source. Avoid adding several sources carrying the same sound, or viewers will hear an echo.

Method 2: Mirror the iPad wirelessly with AirPlay

AirPlay is convenient when the iPad must remain untethered, but it introduces delay. It is suitable for drawing, presentations, and slower demonstrations; it is less suitable for fast games or music performance.

Using a Mac as the AirPlay receiver

  1. Put the iPad and Mac on the same Wi-Fi network.
  2. On the iPad, open Control Center by swiping down from the upper-right corner.
  3. Tap Screen Mirroring.
  4. Select the Mac.
  5. Open OBS and add a Window Capture source for the mirrored display or receiver window.

The exact receiver window depends on the macOS version and configuration. If the Mac is not listed, check that AirPlay Receiver is enabled in macOS settings and that both devices are on the same network. Corporate, guest, and hotel networks often block the device discovery AirPlay needs.

Using an AirPlay receiver app

On Windows or on a Mac where the built-in receiver is unavailable, install a reputable AirPlay receiver application. After installing it:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open the receiver application.
  2. Connect the iPad and computer to the same network.
  3. On the iPad, choose Control Center > Screen Mirroring.
  4. Select the receiver application.
  5. In OBS, capture the receiver window with Window Capture.

Use a wired Ethernet connection for the streaming computer where possible. Keep the iPad close to the access point, stop large downloads, and test for several minutes before going live. A wireless mirror can look fine in a short test and still freeze when the network becomes busy.

Method 3: Connect the iPad through HDMI and a capture card

This method works with Windows and is also useful on a Mac when you want the iPad to appear as a standard camera-like source.

Apple USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter
  • The USB-C digital AV multiport adapter lets you connect your USB-C enabled Mac or iPad to an HDMI display, while also connecting a standard USB device and a USB-C charging cable. This adapter allows you to mirror your Mac Display to your HDMI-enabled TV or display.
  • Simply connect the adapter to a USB-C or Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) port on your Mac or select iPad model and then to your TV or projector via an HDMI cable (sold separately).
  • Use the standard USB port to connect devices such as your flash drive or camera or a USB cable for syncing and charging your iOS devices. You can also connect a charging cable to the USB-C port to charge your Mac, iPad, or iPhone.
  • System Requirements: macOS Mojave 10.14.6 or later; iOS 12.4 or later
  • Requires an HDMI cable (sold separately) for connection to your TV or projector. Supports both video and audio output.

Hardware required

  • An iPad-compatible USB-C or Lightning digital AV adapter
  • An HDMI cable
  • An HDMI capture card with USB output
  • A USB port on the streaming computer

Connection order

  1. Connect the adapter to the iPad.
  2. Connect HDMI from the adapter to the capture card’s HDMI In port.
  3. Connect the capture card to the computer by USB.
  4. Unlock the iPad and allow any accessory prompt.
  5. Open OBS and select the capture card.

Add the capture card in OBS

  1. In the selected OBS scene, click + under Sources.
  2. Choose Video Capture Device.
  3. Give the source a name and click OK.
  4. Select the capture card from the Device menu.
  5. Set the resolution and frame rate to Device Default first.
  6. Click OK, then resize the source in the preview.

If the capture card supports it, you can later choose a specific format such as 1920×1080 at 60 fps. The iPad, adapter, capture card, and OBS settings must agree; mismatched frame rates commonly produce a black screen, stutter, or an unsupported-format message.

Configure the OBS canvas and output

For a typical landscape iPad stream, open Settings > Video and start with:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Setting Practical starting value
Base (Canvas) Resolution 1920×1080 for a standard landscape stream
Output (Scaled) Resolution 1920×1080 if the computer and upload speed can handle it; otherwise 1280×720
Common FPS Values 30 for presentations and most apps; 60 for fast games if the entire chain supports it

For a vertical iPad stream, use a vertical canvas such as 1080×1920, or keep a landscape canvas and place the portrait feed beside a webcam, chat panel, or branding. Do not stretch a portrait feed to fill a landscape canvas; use Transform > Fit to Screen and fill the unused space deliberately.

Then open Settings > Output and choose the streaming service. Use the service’s recommended bitrate rather than choosing an extreme value. A faster frame rate and resolution require more encoding and upload capacity.

Add a webcam, microphone, and overlays

  1. Add the iPad source first so its size and position are correct.
  2. Add a webcam with Sources > + > Video Capture Device.
  3. Add a microphone with Sources > + > Audio Input Capture.
  4. Add labels, borders, or alerts with Image, Text, or browser-based sources.
  5. Put overlays above the iPad source in the Sources list. OBS renders sources higher in the list over sources below them.

For a tutorial, a useful layout is the iPad at the center, a small camera view in one corner, and a text label identifying the app or controls. Keep important buttons away from the edges: viewers may see less of the image on mobile devices.

Prevent notifications and accidental interruptions

  1. Enable Do Not Disturb or a suitable Focus mode on the iPad.
  2. Turn on Guided Access if you want to lock the stream to one app. Set it up in Settings > Accessibility > Guided Access.
  3. Disable automatic rotation if the app must stay in one orientation.
  4. Charge the iPad during long streams.
  5. Close private apps and remove sensitive widgets from the Home Screen.

Some apps deliberately block screenshots, recording, or mirroring. Streaming services that use HDCP may produce a black image through HDMI, and an app may show a black or blank area even though the rest of the iPad is visible. OBS settings cannot remove that restriction.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix common problems

Problem Likely cause What to try
QuickTime does not list the iPad iPad is locked, untrusted, or the cable is data-incompatible Unlock it, accept Trust, reconnect, and try another cable or port.
OBS shows a black QuickTime window Wrong window selected or macOS capture permission is missing Re-select the movie-recording window and check System Settings > Privacy & Security > Screen Recording for OBS.
AirPlay is delayed or freezes Wi-Fi congestion or weak signal Use USB or HDMI, connect the computer by Ethernet, and reduce network traffic.
Capture card has no picture Wrong HDMI port, unsupported format, or protected content Use HDMI In, reconnect the adapter, set the source to Device Default, and test another app.
Picture is present but no sound Audio is not routed into OBS Check the OBS mixer, select the correct input, and remove duplicate or muted sources.
Sound has an echo The same iPad audio is captured twice Mute one of the duplicate sources in the Audio Mixer.
Stream is choppy while preview is smooth Encoder, GPU, USB, or network overload Test a recording, lower output resolution or frame rate, close heavy apps, and try a different USB port.

Check Mac graphics information when OBS performs poorly

Metal compatibility is not the same thing as capture compatibility, and a large amount of VRAM does not by itself identify the Metal version. If a Mac has rendering or graphics-related problems, use Apple’s definitive check rather than guessing from the GPU name.

  1. Choose Apple menu  > System Settings > General > About > System Report.
  2. Alternatively, hold Option while choosing Apple menu  > System Information.
  3. Select Graphics/Displays in the sidebar.
  4. Read the Metal Support or Metal Family field.

If the pane shows Metal Support, macOS displays the latest Metal version supported by that Mac. If it shows Metal Family, Apple says the Mac supports Metal 2 and earlier; that label does not prove Metal 3 or Metal 4 support.

For context, Apple’s current support information says Metal 4 requires an Apple-silicon Mac running macOS Tahoe 26 or later. Metal 3 requires macOS Ventura 13 or later on supported models, with exceptions for Intel models using AMD Radeon Pro 500-series graphics. This matters when diagnosing graphics software, but it does not replace OBS’s own performance test.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

Run a private test before going live

  1. Start an OBS recording rather than immediately starting a public stream.
  2. Play the exact app or game you plan to show.
  3. Check the recording for frame drops, audio delay, cropped controls, notifications, and readable text.
  4. Open OBS’s View > Stats window and watch for dropped frames, rendering lag, and encoding lag.
  5. Fix the largest problem before changing several settings at once.

A wired QuickTime or HDMI setup is usually the safest choice for a long live broadcast. Use AirPlay when freedom from cables is more valuable than the lowest possible latency.

FAQ

Can I stream an iPad directly into OBS without a computer or adapter?

No. OBS runs on the streaming computer and needs an incoming source. Use QuickTime on a Mac, an AirPlay receiver, or an HDMI capture card to bridge the iPad to OBS.

Which method has the least delay?

A wired connection is normally best. QuickTime over USB and HDMI through a capture card generally have less delay than AirPlay over Wi-Fi.

Why is my iPad visible in OBS but its audio is missing?

Video and audio may be arriving through different devices. Check the OBS Audio Mixer, add the iPad or capture card as an Audio Input Capture source, and make sure the source is not muted. Also ensure the sound is not being captured twice.

Can I use an iPad with OBS on Windows?

Yes. The most reliable Windows setup is an iPad digital AV adapter connected by HDMI to a USB capture card, which you then add in OBS as a Video Capture Device. A wireless AirPlay receiver is another option but usually has more latency.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does the HDMI capture card show a black screen?

Check the adapter, HDMI In port, USB connection, and source format. Some apps and streaming services use content protection that prevents their video from appearing through HDMI. OBS cannot bypass that restriction.

Should I stream at 30 or 60 frames per second?

Use 30 fps for presentations, drawing, and ordinary app demonstrations. Use 60 fps for fast games only when the iPad output, capture device, computer, encoder, and upload connection can sustain it.

Does a dedicated GPU guarantee Metal support for OBS?

No. GPU type, VRAM, and the distinction between integrated and discrete graphics do not by themselves identify the supported Metal version. On a Mac, check System Information > Graphics/Displays and read Metal Support or Metal Family.

The Bottom Line

For a Mac, start with QuickTime Player over USB: select the iPad in File > New Movie Recording, then capture that window in OBS. For Windows or a more conventional production setup, use an iPad HDMI adapter and capture card. Choose AirPlay only when wireless operation is worth accepting extra latency, and always make a private recording to verify both picture and sound before broadcasting.
