To stream OBS Studio to Wowza, create or select a destination in the Wowza product you use, copy that destination’s connection details into OBS under Settings > Stream, then start the stream and verify that Wowza is receiving it. Wowza Video and Wowza Streaming Engine use different setup screens and connection values, so use the details shown in your own account or server—not a generic endpoint.

Before you connect: identify your Wowza product

Wowza Video is a hosted service. Wowza Streaming Engine is media-server software installed in your own environment. The OBS workflow is similar, but the destination setup, connection details, and verification screens differ.

Destination Where to get connection details What to enter in OBS Where to verify reception
Wowza Video The Overview page for the live stream configured with an RTMP encoder source The assigned RTMP server URL and stream name/key; source username and password where required Start the live stream in Wowza Video, then check its video preview and metrics
Wowza Streaming Engine Application Connection Settings in Wowza Streaming Engine Manager The application endpoint and unique stream name, plus source credentials if authentication is enabled Check the live source or application status in Manager and confirm the published stream appears

Collect the correct Wowza connection values

Wowza Video

Create or select a live stream whose source is an RTMP encoder, then open that stream’s Overview page and use its displayed source connection information. It includes the ingest server, port, application, stream name, and source credentials. Wowza’s RTMP encoder instructions describe an RTMP URL built from the assigned ingest server, port, and application; the stream name/key and source username/password are separate values. Follow the values shown for your stream rather than copying an example from elsewhere.

Wowza Video also documents RTMPS on port 443 when the encoder supports it. This is an available option, not a guarantee that it will resolve every network or connection problem.

Wowza Streaming Engine

Create or select a live application, then open its Application Connection Settings in Manager. Use the server, port, application, stream name, and source login shown for that application. The Wowza Streaming Engine publisher guide says source authentication for RTMP/RTSP is required by default; login is unnecessary only if the application has been configured not to require it. TCP port 1935 is Streaming Engine’s default streaming port, but a deployment may use a different port or have network rules that block it.

Configure OBS Studio for Wowza

  1. Open the stream settings. In OBS, go to Settings > Stream. Choose the custom service or custom streaming server option rather than assuming a dedicated Wowza preset is available. OBS documents custom server setup in its streaming connection guide.
  2. Enter the destination server. Copy the Wowza-provided server URL into OBS’s server field. For Wowza Video, use the assigned RTMP URL and values displayed on the stream’s Overview page. For Streaming Engine, use the endpoint from that application’s Connection Settings.
  3. Enter the stream name or key. Put the Wowza-assigned stream name/key in OBS’s stream key field. Enter any source username and password in the fields provided by the Wowza connection workflow. Do not paste account secrets into a public example or screenshot.
  4. Save the settings and run a short test. Click Apply and OK. Test for a few minutes before an event; OBS’s Quick Start guide recommends testing rather than making a first live broadcast your first check.

Choose output settings for your specific destination

OBS controls video bitrate, audio bitrate, resolution, and frame rate. OBS’s streaming connection guide explains that video bitrate depends on your upload speed and the service’s limits; resolution and frame rate are configured in OBS’s Video settings. The Wowza connection guidance cited here does not establish one bitrate, codec, resolution, or frame rate that applies to every Wowza product, account, and deployment. Use the profile required by your workflow and verify it with a test at the receiving destination.

Start the stream and confirm Wowza receives it

For Wowza Video

  1. Start the live stream in Wowza Video.
  2. Start streaming in OBS.
  3. Return to the Wowza stream page and confirm that the video preview and metrics show incoming media.

Wowza’s encoder setup instructions use the preview and metrics as the reception check. OBS showing that it has started is not, by itself, confirmation that Wowza is receiving usable audio and video.

For Wowza Streaming Engine

  1. Start streaming in OBS.
  2. Open the application or live source status in Wowza Streaming Engine Manager.
  3. Confirm that the source is listed and active, and compare the connection details in Manager with the server, port, application, and stream name configured in OBS.

Troubleshoot connection and media problems

  • OBS fails immediately or targets the wrong destination: Check that you are using settings for the correct Wowza product. Compare the complete server, port, and application values with the account’s Overview page or the Engine application’s Connection Settings.
  • Authentication fails: Recheck the source username and password. For Streaming Engine, confirm whether source authentication is enabled; it is required by default unless the application is configured otherwise.
  • The connection stalls or appears blocked: Check the configured port and relevant network or firewall rules with the system administrator. Streaming Engine’s default streaming port is TCP 1935; Wowza Video documents RTMPS on port 443 for encoders that support it. Changing ports will not necessarily solve every network issue.
  • Wowza connects but receives no usable audio or video: Review OBS’s output configuration and run a short test. Use settings appropriate for the particular destination; there is no universal profile established for every Wowza account.
