To stream a pre-recorded playlist to YouTube Live in 1080p, use an encoder to play the files and send one continuous feed to a YouTube Live event. Set the encoder output to 1920×1080 and choose either 30 or 60 fps; YouTube’s recommended H.264 ingest bitrate is 14 Mbps for 1080p30 or 17 Mbps for 1080p60. The playlist and loop behavior come from the encoder, not a universal YouTube playlist-broadcast control.
Choose a fixed frame rate and bitrate
Set resolution and frame rate in the encoder. Choose a target rate that matches the source files where practical, and avoid changing it while the stream is live. The following are YouTube Help’s recommended ingest bitrates; they are encoder settings, not a guarantee that every viewer will immediately receive playback at that resolution.
| Codec | Output | Minimum bitrate | Recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|---|
| H.264 | 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| H.264 | 1080p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| AV1 or H.265 | 1080p at 30 fps | 4 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
| AV1 or H.265 | 1080p at 60 fps | 4 Mbps | 12 Mbps |
For example, if the videos are 30 fps and do not need the smoother motion of 60 fps, 1080p30 uses the lower recommended H.264 bitrate. The upload connection must sustain the selected bitrate reliably; test and check YouTube’s stream-health indicators rather than assuming a configured value is sufficient. YouTube transcodes the incoming live feed into multiple playback formats, so the encoder’s 1080p setting does not mean every viewer will see 1080p immediately. YouTube’s encoder settings guidance also recommends testing with audio and movement similar to the real stream.
Recommended Free Tools
Configure the encoder output
YouTube’s RTMP/RTMPS recommendations include H.264, H.265, or AV1 video, frame rates up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), a recommended keyframe interval of 2 seconds (no more than 4 seconds), and AAC or MP3 audio. YouTube recommends RTMPS. For SDR, its advanced recommendations include Rec. 709, progressive scan, square pixels, and 8-bit depth. These are ingest recommendations; the encoder must produce the feed in the selected format.

YouTube normally detects encoder settings automatically. If you need to choose the resolution manually, create a custom stream key and turn on “Turn on manual settings” under “Stream Resolution” in the stream-key settings. Labels and placement can change; consult the current Live Control Room and encoder interfaces if they differ. YouTube Help: encoder settings
Set up the YouTube event and playlist
- Create the event: In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room, create or schedule a live stream, and set its title, visibility, and other metadata. Select an encoder stream key. Treat the key like a password: anyone with it may be able to send a feed to your event. YouTube Help: create a live stream with an encoder
- Set the output: In your encoder, choose 1920×1080 and one target frame rate, such as 30 or 60 fps. Set the codec, bitrate, CBR mode, keyframe interval, and audio format according to the settings above and your encoder’s available options.
- Add and verify the files: Add the pre-recorded videos using the encoder’s media playback or playlist controls. Check the order, transitions, audio routing, and what happens when playback reaches the end. If the broadcast should repeat, confirm the encoder actually loops the playlist. Playback and loop controls are encoder-specific.
- Connect the encoder: Enter the YouTube server URL and stream key in the encoder’s stream output settings. Keep the key private; do not include it in screenshots or public instructions.
- Test before going public: Start the encoder and inspect the Live Control Room preview and stream health. Test representative movement and audio, and verify that the feed stays stable and the playlist behaves as intended before making the event public or allowing it to begin.
Using OBS or dedicated hardware
OBS on a computer
YouTube lists OBS as a verified software encoder. Use its supported media playback inputs or playlist controls to feed your files, then verify ordering and end-of-playlist behavior in the OBS version you have installed. The available documentation does not establish exact playlist controls or behavior for a particular OBS version, so do not assume that a playlist will loop until you test it locally. You do not need a capture card just to play video files already stored on the computer. YouTube’s verified encoder listing · OBS media sources

Dedicated hardware
YouTube’s verified-encoder listing describes the AJA HELO Plus as a standalone H.264 encoder with a PlayToStream feature that can schedule pre-recorded media directly to YouTube Live. It is an optional hardware route, not a requirement for an ordinary software-encoder setup. Current price and retail availability are not established here. YouTube’s verified encoder listing
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsTroubleshoot common problems
- The preview does not appear: Check that the encoder is running, the correct event and stream key are selected, and the server URL and key were entered correctly. A stream key is event authorization, so a wrong or outdated key can send the feed elsewhere or prevent the event from receiving it.
- The stream reports unstable health or drops frames: Confirm the upload connection can sustain the configured bitrate, then lower the bitrate if necessary and test again. Do not treat YouTube’s recommended bitrate as proof that a particular connection can carry it reliably.
- The output is not 1080p or uses the wrong frame rate: Check the encoder’s output settings first. If YouTube is expected to use a manually selected resolution, confirm the custom stream key has “Turn on manual settings” enabled under “Stream Resolution.”
- The playlist stops or does not repeat: Check the encoder’s playlist and end-of-media behavior. Looping is not a universal YouTube event setting; verify it in the exact encoder version before relying on continuous playback.
- Audio is missing or movement looks wrong: Check the encoder’s audio routing and selected audio format, then test a section containing both sound and motion in the Live Control Room preview.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you want a YouTube channel to keep playing uploaded video without leaving an encoder computer on, StreamNeo runs the stream from the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. The stream plays uploaded videos; it does not broadcast a camera feed.

Before broadcasting a playlist, confirm that you have the rights needed to stream every video and its audio. YouTube’s copyright and monetization policies apply to live streams as well as uploads; permission to use a recording in one context does not automatically establish permission to rebroadcast it live. Review the current rules in YouTube Help and the applicable YouTube policy pages before scheduling a stream. Also consider whether repeated or minimally changed material complies with the policies that apply to your channel and intended monetization.
