To store XRP safely in self-custody, protect the account’s seed or private key: it is the authority that lets someone sign transactions. Keep that secret offline where practical, never share or enter it on a website, and choose a wallet based on how often you transact and how confidently you can secure its recovery material. If you lose the key, the XRP Ledger has no recovery option.

What self-custody means for XRP

A wallet does not hold XRP in the way a physical wallet holds cash. XRP and account records are recorded on the XRP Ledger; wallet software or a hardware device manages keys and signs transactions. In self-custody, you control the signing secret and take responsibility for generating, protecting, and recovering it.

Anyone who knows your account’s seed or private key can create signatures to authorize transactions. The XRP Ledger documentation warns that a person with the secret can authorize transactions with the same authority as the account owner: Cryptographic Keys. If you lose the keys, the ledger cannot restore access: Crypto Wallets.

Choose a storage approach

There is no single best choice for every person or balance. Weigh how often you transact against key exposure, recovery-copy handling, physical security, transaction compatibility, and the operational complexity you can reliably manage.

Approach How it works Main trade-off
Software wallet Keys are stored digitally on your device. Convenient and accessible, but exposed to risks such as device or software compromise.
Hardware wallet A physical device stores the secret key and can be disconnected when not in use. Reduces direct exposure of the signing secret, but you must secure the device and its recovery material and confirm model and transaction compatibility.
Air-gapped signing Keys remain on an offline machine; signed transactions are transferred to an online machine for submission. Provides greater isolation but requires careful software sourcing, secure transfer procedures, and protection against physical access.

The XRP Ledger’s documentation describes software and hardware wallet approaches and offline signing: Cryptographic Keys and Secure Signing.

When a software wallet may fit

A software wallet can suit frequent transactions when ease of access matters and you can keep the device and its software secure. Download wallet software only from its official provider, and generate keys in a trusted environment. A compromised application can expose keys, so convenience does not remove the need to protect the secret.

When to consider a hardware wallet

A hardware wallet is a dedicated signing device that can be disconnected when idle. It can reduce the secret’s exposure to an internet-connected computer, but it does not protect you if someone obtains your recovery material, tricks you into approving a transaction, or gains control of the device. Before buying, check the exact model’s current XRP Ledger support and which transaction types it supports. The XRPL documentation names Ledger Nano S as an example, but that reference does not establish current availability or support for every model or transaction: Secure Signing.

When offline signing may fit

In an air-gapped setup, the machine holding the keys stays offline. You move a transaction to it for signing, then transfer the signed transaction to an online machine for submission. This reduces network exposure, but it is not automatically safe: physical access to the offline machine or compromised software moved onto it can undermine the setup. Do not reuse a transfer drive that has been connected to a networked computer. Follow the XRP Ledger’s precautions for secure signing.

  • NO ELECTRONICS FOR OFFLINE XRP STORAGE - No battery, no Bluetooth, no USB, and no firmware updates. These stainless steel XRP coins are designed for offline cold storage and keep key information separate from internet-connected devices.
  • NO SEED PHRASE AND NO PIN OR PASSWORD - Ballet simplifies XRP cold storage with no 12 or 24-word seed phrase to write down and no PIN or password to remember, making setup easier for beginners and long-term holders.
  • WORKS WITH BALLET CRYPTO APP FOR XRP - Use the Ballet Crypto App for iOS and Android to scan each coin, view the XRP address, load XRP, check balances, and transfer XRP through a guided workflow.
  • TAMPER-EVIDENT SECURITY LAYERS - Each coin includes peel-to-reveal protection that helps provide a clear visual signal if the private key area has been accessed. Once opened to move funds out, the coin should not be reused for secure cold storage.

Protect the seed or private key

Choose a trusted environment for key generation, and keep the master secret away from internet-connected systems wherever practical. XRPL documentation describes offline storage options including a securely stored physical copy or an air-gapped machine. If you store a copy digitally, encrypt it; do not leave it as plain text on a connected computer. If you store it physically, protect it from theft, damage, and unauthorized viewing: Cryptographic Keys and Secure Signing.

  • Never email or message your seed or private key, enter it on a website, or give it to a support agent or online signing service.
  • Do not keep an unencrypted copy in a notes app, document, screenshot, or other file on an internet-connected device.
  • Restrict access to physical recovery copies; a hidden copy that others can find is not secure.
  • Keep recovery material usable and legible, while ensuring that a person who finds it cannot readily identify or access your account.
  • Use only wallet and device-management software from the provider’s official source, and verify transaction details on the signing device where the wallet supports doing so.

The XRPL’s warning is direct: “Any configuration in which outside sources may gain access to your secret key is dangerous, and is likely to result in a malicious user stealing all your XRP (and anything else your XRP Ledger address has).” See Secure Signing.

Understand recovery before storing XRP

There is no central XRP Ledger administrator who can reset your seed or recover your account for you. Losing the only usable copy of the secret can mean permanent loss of access; disclosing it can let another person control the account. Plan for both accidental loss and unauthorized access before relying on a wallet for funds.

A recovery copy is itself a key to the account. Store it independently and securely rather than treating it as an ordinary backup file. Avoid making copies in places that are easy to access remotely or that other people can view. For a hardware wallet, the recovery material remains essential even though the device stores and uses the signing key.

Advanced XRPL authorization options

Regular keys and multi-signing change how an account authorizes transactions. They can reduce reliance on a single key for routine use, but require careful account configuration and are not necessary for every self-custody user.

Regular key

An account can use a regular key for routine transactions while keeping its master key offline. If the regular key is compromised, the master key can replace it. This is an advanced setup: understand the account configuration and recovery implications before changing keys. See the XRPL documentation on cryptographic keys.

Multi-signing

Multi-signing lets an account require signatures from multiple keys, which may be held on separate devices or by different people. It adds setup complexity, transaction costs, and a reserve requirement. A configuration mistake can impair access, so it is best suited to people prepared to manage the added operational burden. Details are in the XRPL documentation on multi-signing.

Check account requirements and changing details

The XRP Ledger account documentation retrieved in 2026 stated that a funded account requires a 1 XRP reserve. Reserve requirements can change, so confirm the live figure in the account documentation before funding an account or changing its configuration. Multi-signing also has reserve and transaction-cost implications.

Wallet compatibility and account requirements are not permanent assumptions. Check current documentation for the exact hardware model, software version, and transaction type you plan to use, and confirm any ledger requirement immediately before acting.
