When a wine delivery arrives, move the bottles out of direct sunlight and away from heat. Keep them in the coolest, darkest place at home where the temperature stays reasonably steady. A wine cooler is useful for longer storage or when your home has no suitable spot, but it is not necessary for every delivery.
What to do when the delivery arrives
- Check the package. Look for broken glass, leaking bottles, or visibly damaged packaging before putting the wine away.
- Move it away from heat and light. Do not leave the delivery in direct sun, a hot car, or beside a heat source. The International Organisation of Vine and Wine (OIV) advises avoiding high temperatures and direct light during shipping and storage (OIV shipping, storage and distribution guidance).
- Choose a stable place. For bottles you expect to drink soon, a cool, dark cupboard, crate, or carton may work if the location does not heat up or fluctuate frequently.
- Contact the seller promptly if there is damage. Photograph the packaging and bottles, then check the seller’s policy and contact the seller or carrier. There is no single remedy or deadline established for all sellers and routes.
Where to keep delivered wine at home
Choose the location for its conditions, not just because it has a rack. Keep wine away from direct light, heat, strong odors, and frequent temperature swings. A cabinet, crate, or original carton can shield bottles from light, but none regulates temperature or humidity. A wine rack organizes bottles; it does not create storage conditions (Publix wine-storage guidance; Liebherr FreshMAG wine-storage guide).
Published recommendations are not identical, so treat their figures as source-specific guidance rather than a single agreed target:

The practical lesson across these different recommendations is to avoid hot conditions and frequent temperature swings, rather than treating one number as a universal rule. Liebherr also reports a tasting example in which fruit aroma decreased dramatically after six months at 31 °C (88 °F); the effect was also clear after 12 months at 23 °C (73 °F). The guide does not give a publication year for that example (Liebherr FreshMAG).

Do you need a wine refrigerator?
Not necessarily. A cool, dark, steady location is generally a reasonable choice for wine you plan to drink soon. Consider a wine refrigerator if you intend to store bottles for an extended period or your home lacks a suitable, stable place. A thermometer-hygrometer can help you measure a closet or cellar, but it does not change the conditions.
When comparing wine refrigerators, focus on the factors that affect your use: temperature uniformity, capacity, shelf fit for your bottles, intended storage duration, noise, energy use, and convenience. Consumer Reports discusses these considerations in its Wine Refrigerator Buying Guide. A standard refrigerator can chill wine before serving, but Liebherr cautions that ordinary refrigerators are limited as long-term wine storage, including because of temperature fluctuations and food odors.

How to position bottles and handle different closures
For cork-finished bottles intended for extended storage, horizontal positioning keeps the cork in contact with the wine, as described in Miele’s and Publix’s storage guidance (Miele USA wine-storage guidance; Publix). Do not assume every closure needs the same orientation. If the bottle will be consumed soon, prioritize a suitable cool, dark, stable location over buying a rack just to lay it down.

If a bottle is broken, leaking, or enclosed in damaged packaging, take photos and contact the seller promptly; also check the carrier’s and seller’s terms. If the wine feels warm, move it to a stable, cool place and ask the seller how to proceed. Warmth alone is not a reliable consumer test of whether a wine has been harmed: the Australian Wine Research Institute explains that transport conditions can affect sensory properties, but does not provide a universal temperature threshold or a simple diagnostic test (AWRI transport and storage).

Delivery rules also depend on the carrier and route. UPS’s U.S. wine-shipping guidance says an adult aged at least 21 must be available to complete delivery under its wine-shipping process, and advises insuring shipments against temperature-related issues and breakage. Check the current terms for the applicable carrier and seller rather than assuming this applies everywhere (UPS: How to ship wine).
