For occasional builders, keep each LEGO set’s spare pieces in its own labeled bag or compartment, and store its instruction booklet with the set or in a nearby labeled file or bin. If your collection is larger, sort loose pieces by set, type, size, or color and use bins, craft boxes, or drawers that make your chosen groups easy to retrieve. Keep bricks dry and away from heat and direct sunlight.
Choose a system that matches how you use your LEGO
Decide whether your priority is keeping each set together or finding a particular kind of piece quickly. LEGO identifies sorting by set, color, size, and type as common approaches; the right choice depends on your collection and how often you rebuild. The options below are practical recommendations, not results of a controlled comparison.

Consider collection size, available shelf or drawer space, and how often you handle the pieces. For a handful of spares, a labeled bag inside an existing box may be enough. For more parts, a clear storage bin, divided craft organizer, small-parts storage box, or plastic drawer system can keep groups apart. Resealable bags and household food-storage containers are other options; you do not need a specialized product to make a useful system.
Store bricks away from heat, sunlight, and moisture
LEGO recommends keeping bricks somewhere dry and away from heat. Its official guidance cautions against direct sunlight or temperatures above 104°F (40°C), which may make bricks brittle or discolored over time. The page does not display a publication year. Read LEGO’s storage guidance.

LEGO lists clear storage bins, tool or craft boxes, sandwich bags, plastic drawer systems, food-storage containers, LEGO Storage bricks, and minifigure display cases as possible formats. These are options, not a single required method. Choose a container that suits your sorting system and keeps small groups from mixing.
Keep instruction booklets easy to find
For a small collection, store each booklet with its set’s labeled spare-parts bag or compartment. If booklets need a separate home, place them in a labeled file, binder, or box and use the set name or number on the label. Match the container to the booklet dimensions and how often you handle it.

LEGO’s US customer-service page says building instructions for thousands of sets, old and new, can be downloaded. It does not say that every historical manual is available. A downloaded file can serve as a backup reference if a paper booklet is misplaced. Find LEGO building instructions.
