The easiest small-space system is to sort only as finely as you need: group bricks into a few useful categories, store small categories in shallow compartments, and keep less-used groups in bags or broader bins. Measure the shelf, drawer, closet, or under-bed area first; then choose containers that fit its footprint and your collection.
Choose a sorting method you will actually use
There is no single official way to sort LEGO bricks. The LEGO Group lists sorting by color, set, size, and type, and says the right choice depends on the builder and collection. More categories can make parts easier to browse, but they also take more compartments and effort to maintain. For a small space, start with the broadest groups that still help you find what you need.
For a mixed collection
Useful starting categories might be bricks; plates and tiles; unusual or large elements; and minifigures and accessories. These are practical suggestions, not a hierarchy prescribed by LEGO. If you build with small parts often, separate just those parts into additional compartments rather than subdividing every category.
For collections kept as sets
Keep each set’s parts together in a labeled bag or container. This is often more useful than mixing pieces by color or type when you want to rebuild that particular set. You can put the bags in a larger bin to use one defined storage footprint.

Measure the space before choosing containers
Measure the available width, depth, and height, including any shelf clearance or drawer limits. Decide whether the storage will stay in one place or needs to move, and leave room to open lids or pull out drawers. Container types LEGO lists include clear bins, tool or craft boxes, sandwich bags, plastic drawer systems, food-storage containers, LEGO storage bricks, and minifigure display cases.
Match the container to the category: shallow, compartmentalized organizers are a practical choice for small pieces you need to see and reach; broader bins or bags suit groups that do not need frequent fine-grained access. This is a layout recommendation based on the available storage forms, not a tested comparison of their performance.

Check the dimensions of LEGO’s organizer cubes
The LEGO Group’s Canadian listing for its three-piece organizer cubes describes them as suitable for sorting or transporting LEGO parts or small builds. The listing gives these dimensions:
- Small cube: over 3.5 inches (8 cm) high, wide, and deep.
- Large cube: over 4.5 inches (11 cm) high, 9 inches (23 cm) wide, and 4.5 inches (11 cm) deep.
The listing says the smaller cubes fit inside the yellow cube when not in use, and describes clear windows and zip closures. These are manufacturer-published details, not independent testing; check the listing for availability in your region and do not assume the stated dimensions establish how many bricks will fit.

Store bricks away from heat and sunlight
The LEGO Group says: “When it comes to storing your LEGO bricks, we always recommend that you store them somewhere that is dry and away from any heat source.” Its official storage guidance also advises avoiding direct sunlight and temperatures above 104°F (40°C), which may make bricks brittle or discolored over time. Keep containers in a dry indoor location away from heat sources and sunny windows.

- Measure the spot. Record the usable width, depth, and height of the shelf, drawer, closet, or under-bed area.
- Decide what you need to retrieve. Keep sets together if you rebuild by set; otherwise choose a few broad types that reflect how you use the collection.
- Assign containers to categories. Use compartments for small groups you access often and bags or broader bins for groups that can stay together.
- Label the groups. Labels on bags or containers make categories easier to return to their assigned place.
- Place storage for access and care. Make sure drawers and lids can open, and keep the collection dry and away from direct sunlight and heat.
LEGO identifies several storage formats but does not publish comparable prices, long-term durability tests, or capacity figures across them. Choose by fit, access, and compatibility with your sorting method rather than assuming one container system is universally best.
