There is no single temperature that suits every prescription: follow the product’s label and patient information, and contact the dispensing pharmacist if the delivery or instructions raise doubts.
What to do when your prescription arrives
- Check the parcel and medicine. Confirm the medicine and strength match your prescription information. Look for visibly damaged or compromised packaging. If anything is wrong, contact the dispensing pharmacy before using the medicine.
- Find the storage directions. Check the dispensing label, manufacturer packaging, and patient information for temperature, light, moisture, refrigeration, and any after-opening requirements. Follow the product-specific instructions. NHS Specialist Pharmacy Service (SPS) guidance explains that manufacturers define ambient ranges, which can vary; its professional guidance gives 15°C to 25°C as an ideal for ambient storage areas, not as a universal range for every medicine (NHS SPS guidance on ambient storage).
- Act on refrigeration requirements promptly. If the medicine must be refrigerated, transfer it to the required storage as soon as practical. If the parcel is unexpectedly warm, frozen, delayed, or otherwise seems to have breached its intended conditions, contact the dispensing pharmacy before deciding whether to use it.
Correct handling during dispatch, transit, delivery, and transfer matters for temperature-sensitive products. NHS SPS warns that direct contact with cool packs can over-cool or freeze medicines, so a cold pack is not proof that the medicine was kept within its required range (NHS SPS guidance on transport).
Where to keep medicines at home
For medicines without special storage requirements, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recommends a cool, dry place, such as a dresser drawer, storage box, closet shelf, or kitchen cabinet. Avoid damp bathrooms and locations near sinks or hot appliances, where heat or humidity can affect medicines (FDA guidance on expired medicines and storage).
- Keep medicines in their labeled packaging where practical so you can refer to the medicine’s identity, strength, directions, and expiry information.
- Keep medicines away from children and from anyone for whom they were not prescribed. A lockable medicine box may help restrict access in some households, but it does not regulate temperature or humidity; choose a location and container compatible with the product’s instructions.
- Do not use medicine beyond its expiry date. The FDA says an expired medicine is not guaranteed to remain safe and effective.
What to do if storage conditions may have gone wrong
Do not decide that a medicine is safe to use based only on its appearance, or apply a general temperature rule to an unknown exposure. Stability depends on the product and the conditions it experienced. Check the medicine’s instructions and promptly ask the dispensing pharmacist or prescriber for product-specific advice before using it. NHS SPS provides professional guidance and a refrigerated-medicine stability tool, but these are not a universal consumer determination for every medicine or delivery incident (NHS SPS refrigerated-medicine stability tool).

How to dispose of unused or expired medicine
Disposal rules depend on where you live and on the product. In the United States, the FDA prefers a take-back location or prepaid mail-back envelope for most unused or expired medicines. If those options are not readily available, check whether the medicine is on the FDA flush list; if it is not, follow the FDA’s household-disposal instructions. Some products, including certain sprays and lozenges, can have specific directions, so check the label or ask a pharmacist (FDA guidance on medicine disposal).
Outside the United States, follow your local pharmacy or medicines regulator’s instructions rather than applying the FDA flush list automatically.

How to check an online pharmacy in the UK
For UK readers, the NHS advises checking that an online pharmacy is registered with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC). It warns that an unregistered website may sell medicines that are out of date, diluted, fake, or unsuitable. The NHS also advises checking relevant registration for online doctor services. These checks are specific to the UK; other countries have their own regulators and registers (NHS guidance on online pharmacies).
