Store darts outside clips, and follow the instructions for your specific blaster when clearing jams or cleaning it.
How to store a Nerf blaster
- Unload it. Remove darts before storage, as directed in the [Hasbro instruction manual](URL).
- Leave it unprimed. Do not put the blaster away cocked or ready to fire. Hasbro’s 2009 manual says not to store the covered blaster cocked; its [Nerf Hyper instructions](URL) likewise say not to store that blaster primed and ready.
- Remove batteries for long-term non-use when the manual says to. The cited Hasbro manual advises removing batteries if its product will not be used for a long time. Check your model’s instructions rather than assuming the same battery guidance applies to every blaster.
- Keep darts out of clips. Hasbro’s jam-prevention advice is: “Do not store darts in the clip.” Put loose darts in a separate container instead.
These directions reflect specific Hasbro instructions, not a single universal storage procedure for every Nerf product.
How to store and care for darts
Use darts that are undamaged and compatible with your blaster. Hasbro advises: “Always use undamaged, official Nerf darts.” Check the model instructions for the correct dart type; projectile types are not universally interchangeable. Hasbro product listings identify some included darts as Official Nerf Elite foam darts, but that does not establish compatibility with every blaster.
Set aside darts that are visibly damaged rather than loading them. Keep usable darts loose in a separate container, not inside a clip during storage.

What to do if darts jam
For a dart jam while priming, Hasbro advises pulling the priming handle fully back before moving it forward, seating darts correctly, and using undamaged official darts. Consult the manual for your exact model’s jam-clearing and access-door procedure; do not force a stuck mechanism or open the blaster as a routine fix.

- Confirm the batteries are properly inserted and new.
- Remove any jammed darts using the model’s stated procedure.
- Close the jam door completely.
- Make sure the clip is locked in place.
- Pull the trigger fully.
These checks come from Hasbro’s motorized-blaster support guidance, updated August 23, 2023; they may not apply to a manual blaster or every model.

Do not treat one product’s cleaning directions as a universal method for all Nerf blasters. For example, Hasbro’s 2023 Nerf Pro Gel Fire Legion instructions say to lock the trigger for storage and clear round residue from the hopper feed or barrel with a long, soft, clean item. Those instructions permit a damp cloth or a soft, clean, dry item for cleaning. This advice is specific to Pro Gel Fire; for foam-dart blasters, Nerf Hyper, or another product, use that model’s manual instead.
