For carded figures, choose a protector that supports the card without pressing against the bubble. These steps reduce risk, but no case or storage method can stop all aging.
Choose between storage and display
Storage minimizes exposure; display necessarily adds light and handling. Light damage accumulates over time, and the Library of Congress explains that it is generally irreversible. UV-filtering glazing can reduce ultraviolet exposure, but it does not make visible light harmless or allow indefinite display. See the Library of Congress guidance on caring for collections.
- For long-term preservation: keep figures in a dark, stable indoor location and inspect them periodically.
- For display: limit the time and intensity of exposure, keep the display away from windows and heat sources, and use a stable enclosure made from suitable materials.
The Museums Association’s 2019 guidance for the majority of plastics recommends a dark, cool, dry room, temperature restricted to 20°C, relative humidity of 30%–50%, and limited display. It reports a recommended maximum light level of 50–150 lux, varying with curator or conservator judgment. These are broad collection-care recommendations, not tested safe limits for every vintage toy or a guarantee against damage. See its plastics-care guidance.
Pick a suitable location and storage material
A cool, dry indoor location with stable conditions is preferable. Avoid sunny windows, hot attics, and poorly controlled basements or garages. A sealed bin will not correct excessive heat, dampness, or environmental swings in the room where it is kept.

For bags, bins, or materials that contact collectibles, the Library of Congress identifies polyethylene, polypropylene, and polyester without added slip or coating agents as stable options. Avoid PVC and unidentified plastics. Its collection-care advice also cautions that some plastics may need ventilation; do not assume airtight storage is appropriate for an item whose material or condition is unknown.
Store loose figures with minimal contact
- Keep figures out of direct light and away from heat.
- Arrange them so they do not rub against or press on one another.
- Use known suitable storage materials rather than unknown bags or containers.
- Handle them as little as practical, and look for surface changes during periodic checks.
Institutional plastics guidance recommends checking collections regularly—at least once a year in the Museums Association’s 2019 guidance—and separating an item that appears to be deteriorating. Degradation products from some plastics can affect nearby objects, so do not leave a visibly changing figure in contact with the rest of the collection.

Protect carded figures without stressing the card or bubble
For a mint-on-card figure, the protector should support the card while leaving the blister free of pressure. Kenner card formats and blister depths vary, including across releases and countries, so verify the fit for the specific item rather than assuming one case suits every card.
- Measure the card and note the blister’s depth and shape.
- Compare those measurements with the protector’s usable interior dimensions.
- Confirm that the card sits securely and the blister does not touch or press against the case.
- Place the protected figure in a stable location away from sunlight and heat.
This fit advice comes from a collector retailer’s Star Wars protective-case guide, not a conservation standard. A case can help prevent handling and contact damage, but it does not eliminate light exposure or make a poor environment safe.

Inspect for deterioration and avoid improvised repairs
Some figures made with plasticized PVC may develop sticky or dripping surfaces and later white crystals as plasticizer migrates. Yvonne Shashoua, Senior Researcher in Conservation at the National Museum of Denmark, described this in a 2010 discussion; it is not a diagnosis for every Star Wars figure. The archived discussion is available through Conservation DistList.
If you see stickiness, crystals, cracking, or another change, separate the item from nearby figures and seek advice from a qualified plastics conservator. Do not apply heat, reshape, re-glue, or try a universal cleaning method. For routine care, minimize handling and clean the outside of a protector rather than repeatedly rubbing original surfaces.
