To protect a large LEGO build, keep it dry and away from direct sunlight and heat, measure the complete model before choosing a shelf or cabinet, and support it on stable furniture with a suitable verified load rating. For cleaning, LEGO recommends hand washing with water no hotter than 40°C (104°F); avoid appliances and other heat sources.
Choose a safe place for the set
LEGO advises storing bricks in a dry place away from heat and direct sunlight. It warns that temperatures above 40°C (104°F) or direct sunlight can make bricks brittle or discolored over time. These are manufacturer care recommendations; the cited guidance does not specify a humidity target or quantify how quickly changes occur. LEGO’s storage guidance applies to loose bricks, but its advice to avoid heat and sun is also useful when deciding where to display an assembled model.
- Keep the display away from heaters and other heat sources, as well as direct sun.
- Choose a dry location. The cited LEGO guidance does not establish a specific humidity level.
- If you store a completed build rather than displaying it, keep it dry and away from heat and sun. LEGO’s cited pages do not prescribe a particular packing material or long-term boxed-storage method.
Measure the model and the display space
Measure the assembled set itself and the space where it will go before buying or installing furniture. LEGO’s large-set guide gives a sense of scale: it describes the Artemis launch-system model as 70 cm tall and the Titanic as 135 cm long. Those examples are not substitutes for checking your own model’s dimensions. LEGO’s large-set display guide also features fan display ideas.
- Measure the model’s width, depth, and height, including its stand and any protruding parts such as masts, wings, or open doors.
- Measure the display’s clear interior dimensions—not just its outside dimensions. For a case, check the space available with the doors closed.
- Allow room to place and remove the model without catching or pressing on fragile protrusions. Consider whether you need access to turn or reposition it.
- Check that the shelf or cabinet is stable and has a verified load rating suitable for the completed build. The LEGO display guide does not provide furniture load ratings or installation specifications.
Choose between an open shelf and a cover
LEGO’s guide discusses shelves, plinths, glass showcases, and custom shelving. An open shelf is easy to access but leaves the model exposed to settling dust. A cover or showcase can reduce dust settling directly on the build, but it must fit the full model and allow safe access. Neither option makes a poor location safe: keep covered and uncovered displays away from direct sunlight and heat.

Check the furniture’s stability and, where relevant, its wall attachment and anchoring. These are practical product-selection checks, not ratings or installation rules supplied by LEGO. The guide includes fan examples such as a converted cupboard with a custom glass plate and custom plywood shelves; these describe individual choices, not tested preservation methods.
Do not assume that a LEGO-branded case intended for display will fit a large set. The Play and Display Case – Blue, model 5006157, is listed at 39 cm wide × 14 cm deep × 19 cm high and includes a transparent cover and six baseplates. Those dimensions make it a small-case example, not a general solution for large builds.

Compare display options against your needs

These are practical comparison criteria, not an official LEGO rating system. The best format depends on the particular model, available space, and how you plan to access it.
Clean the model without exposing it to heat
LEGO recommends hand cleaning with water at or below 40°C (104°F), using a soft cloth or sponge. Mild detergent may be used, followed by a rinse with clear water. For electronic parts or sensitive elements containing metal, LEGO advises using a cloth moistened with water and mild detergent that contains no perfume or oil. Use lighting and angles as presentation choices
LEGO’s guide relays fan suggestions such as choosing an angle that suits the model, using mirrors to show details, indirect LED lighting, and rotating a display temporarily. Treat these as aesthetic ideas, not tested conservation requirements. Whatever lighting you choose, do not place the build in direct sunlight.
