Choose that location before choosing a box: a polyethylene or polypropylene bin can help keep out dust and incidental water, but it cannot fix poor temperature or humidity or protect a collection from flooding. Then sort toys by material and condition, support fragile pieces, and keep materials that can react with one another apart.
Choose a stable room before choosing containers
Use an indoor space with steady conditions and low risk of leaks or flooding. Keep toys away from windows, heaters, vents, and direct light. The Library of Congress advises, “Do not store objects of value in the basement, attic, or garage,” where temperature and humidity are often less controlled and water risks can be higher. Dark storage helps because light exposure is cumulative. Put toys away in closed storage when they are not on display, and turn off storage-room lights when practical. The Canadian Conservation Institute (CCI) recommends no more than 150 lux illumination and UV below 75 microwatts per lumen for rubber and plastic objects. These are conservation recommendations, not universal damage thresholds for every toy. Sort toys by material and condition
Before packing, identify what each piece is made of as far as you can: plastic, rubber, metal, paper or cardboard packaging, fabric, or a combination. A single toy may combine materials with different storage needs, so avoid assuming that one humidity level or enclosure suits the whole collection.

Look for corrosion, sticky or powdering surfaces, cracks, distortion, and strong acidic odors. Keep actively corroding metal and strongly deteriorating materials separate from other objects. If a toy is unstable, sticky, powdering, or strongly odorous, consult a qualified objects conservator before trying specialist treatments or unusually dry, cold, or oxygen-reduced storage.
Choose containers and supports that suit the toys
Use stable plastics as secondary protection
Polyethylene and polypropylene bags, sleeves, or bins without added slip or coating agents are considered stable and inert by the Library of Congress. Confirm the container’s material rather than relying on a generic “plastic” label, and avoid PVC and unidentified plastics. A bin can limit dust and incidental water exposure; it does not control room temperature or humidity or make a flood-prone location safe. Library of Congress: General Preservation FAQ.
Do not seal every object by default
Some materials can release acidic gases as they deteriorate. Cellulose esters and Ebonite are examples identified by the CCI; objects made from these materials may need ventilation rather than an airtight enclosure. If a toy’s composition is uncertain or its odor is changing, do not seal it indiscriminately.

Support fragile pieces instead of stacking them
Use clean, stable supports and padding to prevent bending, flexing, pressure, and stress. Brittle toys may break under their own weight. Keep sticky rubber from touching neighboring objects or porous materials, where it can adhere. Use suitable non-stick interleaving only where contact is a concern, and avoid stacking objects in a way that puts weight on fragile parts. Plastic and rubber
Radiation, high humidity and temperature, oxygen and pollutant gases, and physical stress can contribute to deterioration. The CCI advises avoiding UV and high-intensity light, heat sources, and relative humidity above 65% for rubber and plastics. Cold can make plastics more brittle, so a cool room is not automatically safer for every toy. CCI: Care of Objects Made from Rubber and Plastic.
Do not clean rubber or plastic with solvents or water-based cleaning solutions under this guidance. For ordinary dust, the CCI recommends careful dry brushing or vacuuming; if that is not sufficient, seek expert advice rather than escalating to a stronger cleaner.

Metal
For stable metal artifacts in a mixed collection, the CCI recommends 35–55% relative humidity. It recommends isolating actively corroding metal and keeping it below 35% RH pending assessment. Keep metal storage clean and ventilated, use chemically stable enclosures and supports, and inspect it regularly. These targets are for metal artifacts; they are not a single humidity prescription for a mixed collection of toys. CCI: Storage of Metals.
Paper and original packaging
Store paper and cardboard packaging in cool, relatively dry, clean, stable conditions with minimal light. The Library of Congress gives about 35% RH as a general paper-storage recommendation. Acid- and lignin-free folders, mats, or boxes can help where they suit the object and its media. Keep paper flat when appropriate, and do not use rubber bands, adhesive tape, or glue to bundle or repair it. Library of Congress: Care, Handling and Storage of Works on Paper.

Monitor conditions and inspect the collection
A digital temperature-and-humidity monitor can help you observe room conditions over time, but a consumer device is not equivalent to conservation-grade monitoring. Record changes if conditions fluctuate, and inspect stored toys periodically for new odor, tackiness, cracking, distortion, corrosion, mold, or changes to packaging. If you find active deterioration, separate the affected piece as appropriate and get a conservator’s assessment before changing its environment substantially.

Not as a general storage method. The CCI discusses cool storage around 4°C or cold storage around −18°C only for selected plastics when the benefits outweigh risks such as brittleness and shrinkage. Such storage also requires careful support, cushioning, moisture control, and precautions against condensation. A practical packing sequence
- Sort and assess: Identify materials where possible and note corrosion, tackiness, cracks, powdering, distortion, or strong odors.
- Choose the room: Prefer a stable indoor location away from direct light, heaters, vents, and water risks; avoid basements, attics, and garages for valuable toys.
- Select compatible enclosures: Use verified polyethylene or polypropylene where a container is appropriate. Avoid PVC and unidentified plastics, and do not seal objects that may need ventilation.
- Support each object: Prevent bending, pressure, and contact between sticky or degraded surfaces and other materials. Do not stack fragile toys under heavier ones.
- Reduce light and monitor: Keep stored objects dark when not in use, observe room conditions, and inspect periodically for change.
