Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf a wanted call doesn’t ring, it may be blocked, silenced or screened, or sent to voicemail. Check the phone’s blocked-number list first, then unknown-caller and spam controls, any contacts-only rule, and your carrier’s call-filter settings. More than one layer can affect the same call.
First identify what is happening to the call
A number-specific block is different from a setting that silences or screens unfamiliar callers. Spam protection and carrier filtering can also intercept calls independently of the phone’s own block list. Google notes that its Phone app’s number-blocking behavior does not necessarily block every number missing from your contacts; check the specific filter rather than assuming all unknown callers are blocked (Google Phone app: Block or unblock a phone number).
- Blocked: The number may appear in a blocked list or a carrier’s blocked-number controls.
- Silenced or screened: The phone may handle an unfamiliar caller differently without placing it on the blocked list.
- Sent to voicemail: A phone setting or carrier filter may route the call away from ringing normally.
Check the phone and carrier settings that apply to your setup; changing one control may not affect another.
On iPhone, review blocked contacts and unknown-call handling
Open the iPhone’s Phone settings and review both blocked contacts and the controls for identifying, screening, filtering or blocking calls. Apple’s instructions also cover marking a caller as known. Follow Apple’s current steps because menu names and locations can vary by iOS release: Apple’s guide to identifying and screening calls.

If you recognize the caller, save the number as a contact or use the available option to mark the caller as known. If the number is explicitly blocked, remove it from the blocked list. Then check whether an unknown-caller or filtering feature is still handling it.
On Android with Google Phone, check the blocked list and spam protection
- Open the Google Phone app and review its blocked numbers. Unblock the wanted number if it appears there.
- Open the app’s settings and review caller ID and spam protection. Adjust the relevant spam or screening control if it is suppressing a call you want to receive.
- Check the call history and voicemail after changing the setting to see whether the caller is still being diverted.
Google’s help explains number blocking and caller ID or spam protection, but available controls depend on the Android version, installed phone app and device configuration. Follow the instructions for your version: Google Phone app: Use caller ID and spam protection.

Check for a contacts-only rule
Some services can limit incoming calls to people in your contacts. If the wanted caller’s number is not saved, such a rule may suppress the call even when the number is not individually blocked. Google Fi documents an option to receive calls and texts only from contacts; add the caller to your contacts or turn off that rule if you want calls from other numbers. See Google Fi’s instructions for blocking calls and texts.
Google Fi also documents a 48-hour suspension of this contacts-only restriction after a 911 call, so unknown first responders can call back. That detail applies to the Fi feature, not to all phones or carriers.

Review your carrier’s call-filter settings
A carrier filter can have separate allow, block or spam controls, so changing the phone’s settings may not be enough. Open your carrier’s app or account and look for call-filter settings, blocked numbers and an allowed-number list.
| Example service | Control documented | Where to check |
|---|---|---|
| Verizon Call Filter | An allowed-numbers control | Verizon Call Filter app or service settings; see Verizon Call Filter FAQs. |
| Xfinity Call Guard | Separate call-block and filter settings | Xfinity Call Guard settings; see Xfinity Call Guard support. |
These are examples of carrier-specific controls, not features that work identically across providers. Use your own carrier’s current instructions and add a trusted number to an allowed list if that option is available.

If the call is still missing
- Look at the phone’s recent calls and voicemail to see whether the call was logged or routed away.
- Check the phone’s blocked list, unknown-caller or spam controls, and any contacts-only rule.
- Check the carrier’s filter app or account for separate block, spam and allowed-number settings.
- If the cause is still unclear, consult current support instructions from the phone maker or carrier for your model, software version and service.
There is no single setting that fixes every case: the result depends on the phone, operating system, dialer app and carrier, and more than one filter may be active.
