If your phone loses charge while navigating in the car, reduce screen use, confirm the charger and cable can keep up, and manage heat. A car’s USB port may provide power too slowly to offset navigation, screen and audio use. Set up your route before driving; use voice directions and make adjustments only when safely parked.
Why navigation can drain the battery even when your phone is plugged in
Navigation draws power for several tasks at once. Google Maps says it uses your device’s current location, screen and speakers during navigation. Android’s battery guidance also identifies long navigation and GPS use as battery-intensive activities. If the power source supplies less energy than the phone is using, the battery can still fall while connected.
A car’s USB port is not necessarily equivalent to a dedicated charger. Apple notes that some car USB ports may charge an iPhone more slowly than a USB-C charger. The result depends on the phone, vehicle port, charger, cable, navigation workload and temperature; there is no single output rating guaranteed to keep every phone charging during every trip.
Reduce screen use first
When you do not need to look at the map, turn off the display and keep listening for spoken directions. Google Maps says voice directions continue with the screen off. If the screen needs to stay on, lower its brightness. Android also recommends reducing screen brightness to conserve battery.

Start the route and make any display or settings changes before setting off. Google recommends using a power adapter for navigation, especially on trips longer than 30 minutes; that is practical guidance, not a guarantee that every car charger will replenish the battery.
Check whether the car charger is keeping up
- Confirm the connection. With the car safely parked, check that the phone indicates it is charging and that the cable is firmly connected at both ends.
- Watch the charge level. Compare the battery level after a short period of navigation. If it continues to drop, the current power source may not be supplying enough for the workload.
- Try a compatible charger and cable. If the built-in port is too slow, consider a car charger compatible with the phone and vehicle, along with a suitable cable. Check the output supported by the phone and the vehicle, how output is shared across multiple ports, and whether the cable is in good condition.
Apple’s charging guidance varies by iPhone generation and connection type, so check the requirements for your specific phone rather than assuming a particular wattage will work. A higher-rated charger cannot guarantee net charging in every car or under every set of conditions.

Keep the phone from getting too hot
Heat can slow or pause charging. Apple advises keeping an iPhone or iPad out of direct sunlight and away from hot spaces; using navigation in a hot car can also affect device behavior. Position the phone away from direct sun and hot surfaces. If charging slows or pauses, or the phone displays a temperature warning, move it somewhere cooler and let it return to a normal temperature.
A mount can help position the phone where it remains visible without sitting in direct sunlight, but it is not a cooling device. Keep the display and mount placement safe for driving, and do not handle or reposition the phone while the car is moving.

Use wireless charging with realistic expectations
Wireless charging can reduce cable clutter, but it is not a guaranteed cure for battery drain. Apple says charging may be limited if an iPhone gets too warm. If you use a wireless charger, check whether the battery level rises during navigation and manage heat just as you would with a wired connection.
Should you turn on Battery Saver?
Android Battery Saver can reduce or turn off background activity and connections, which may delay some features. It may help reduce battery use, but check that navigation behaves as you need on your particular phone. Do not disable location services while navigating: the app needs location to provide directions.

A quick troubleshooting order
- Set your destination before driving and use spoken directions with the display off when practical.
- Lower brightness when you need the map visible.
- Check that the phone recognizes the charger and whether the battery level rises.
- If it falls, test a compatible charger and cable that suit both the phone and car.
- Move the phone out of direct sun and let it cool if charging slows or pauses.
- Consider Battery Saver only after checking its effect on navigation features you rely on.
