If the problem continues after those checks, your carrier may need to review voicemail timing or call routing. Does it happen with every caller or only some, and does your phone show a missed call?
1. Check Do Not Disturb and other Modes
Swipe down from the top of the screen to open Quick Settings and check whether Do Not Disturb is on. Turn it off and ask someone to call again. Do Not Disturb and other Modes can silence or filter calls, so a call may not ring even when the handset has service.
If Do Not Disturb turns itself back on, or only certain people can reach you, check for a schedule or another active Mode, such as Bedtime or Driving. Review its call filters to see which callers are allowed through. Settings and labels vary by phone; some Google instructions apply only to Android 14 and later. Google’s guide to limiting interruptions explains the available controls.
2. Review blocked numbers and unknown callers
In the Phone app, open Settings and look for Blocked numbers or a similarly named option. Unblock any legitimate caller you find there. In Google’s Phone app, a blocked number is automatically declined. Its Unknown setting blocks private or unidentified numbers—not every number that is absent from your contacts. Google’s instructions for blocking or unblocking numbers cover these controls.

If only one caller is affected, check that number’s entry and blocking status first. The symptom alone does not prove that the caller is blocked.
3. Check Airplane mode and cellular signal
Make sure Airplane mode is off and that the phone shows cellular signal. If signal is absent or poor, move to a place with better reception and try again. These are basic connection checks, not a guaranteed menu path for every Android phone. AT&T’s Pixel 9a troubleshooting guidance includes Airplane mode and signal checks; the cited instructions are specific to that device and carrier.

4. Ask your carrier about voicemail timing and routing
If the settings and connection checks do not resolve the issue, contact your carrier. Google notes: “Many phone carriers offer the ability to change the ring duration or number of rings before incoming calls go to voicemail.” Ask whether your carrier can adjust that timing and check how calls are routed to voicemail. Options vary by carrier, so do not assume there is a universal Android setting or dial code. Google Phone app Help’s call-settings guidance directs users to their carrier for this change.
If calls from every number still go straight to voicemail, ask the carrier to check your line status, voicemail routing, and call forwarding. Mention whether the phone shows signal and whether calls fail in other ways. The symptom by itself does not establish an account problem, SIM fault, provisioning issue, or network outage.
