To keep private files out of Windows Search, change which folders or file contents are indexed. To remove web results, use a separate control: Microsoft documents a policy for certain managed Windows editions, but not a universal consumer toggle. These settings solve different problems, so changing the local index alone will not stop web results.
Exclude a private folder from Windows Search
In Windows 11, open Settings > Privacy & security > Searching Windows. Under Find my files, choose an indexing scope, then select Customize search locations to inspect indexed locations and remove the sensitive folder. In Windows 10, Microsoft documents the path as Settings > Search > Searching Windows. Labels and menus can vary by Windows release.
Windows Search uses an index—a catalog of file information—to make local searches faster. By default, it indexes file properties and may index contents. Removing a folder from indexed locations keeps that location out of this search catalog; it does not erase the files or prevent other apps from accessing them.
Choose Classic or Enhanced coverage
| Setting | What it covers | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Classic | Common profile folders such as Documents, Pictures, Music, and Desktop by default. | Narrower coverage than Enhanced. |
| Enhanced | User folders and files broadly across the PC. | More comprehensive, but can use more system resources and affect battery life and CPU consumption. |
Microsoft says index size is typically less than 10 percent of the size of indexed files, but that rule of thumb can be exceeded with many small files or code. Initial indexing can take up to a couple of hours; later changes are indexed in the background. These are Microsoft Support estimates, with no publication year stated on the support page.

Keep filenames searchable but exclude file contents
If you want Windows to find a file by name but not match words inside it, use properties-only indexing for its file type. Open Customize search locations > Advanced > File Types, select the extension, and choose properties only. Microsoft says this prevents indexing and searching the file’s contents while preserving searches of its properties, including its filename. This applies by file type; excluding a whole folder is broader.
Stop Windows Search from querying the web
Microsoft documents the DoNotUseWebResults device policy. When enabled, it prevents web queries and hides web results in Search. The documented Group Policy path is Computer Configuration > Windows Components > Search > Don’t search the web or display web results in Search.

Microsoft lists this policy for Windows Enterprise, Education, and IoT Enterprise editions from Windows 10 version 1803 onward; Pro is not listed as supported. It is a policy-managed setting, not a universal consumer switch. The cited Microsoft documentation does not establish a single equivalent web-results toggle for all Windows Home and Pro users, so do not assume that changing local indexing or an unrelated setting removes web results.
Keep web, cloud, and local search controls distinct
Windows Search can return results from the device, a personal Microsoft account, a work or school account, and the web; Bing powers web results and suggestions. Excluding a local folder changes the local index, not cloud-account results. If your concern is account content, review Search permissions and the relevant account settings as well as your local indexing choices.

In Windows 11, SafeSearch is under Settings > Privacy & security > Search permissions. It filters sensitive web previews; it does not remove the web as a source of search results. Microsoft’s Search privacy and indexing guidance also notes that semantic indexing is enabled by default on Copilot+ PCs. Microsoft says semantic-indexing data is stored locally and describes ways to exclude locations and file types, but this should not be read as a guarantee that other software cannot access index data: installed apps may be able to read it.

- Removing a folder from indexed locations stops that folder from being included in the Windows Search index; it does not securely erase the files.
- Properties-only indexing makes file contents unsearchable through the index for the selected type while leaving properties such as filenames searchable.
- Neither change removes copies stored in OneDrive or work or school accounts, nor does it establish that other apps cannot read the files or index data.
- Web-result policy controls whether Search queries the web and displays those results; it does not replace local indexing controls.
