If sweet bell peppers seem to upset your stomach, look for a repeatable pattern before cutting them out. Note how much you ate, whether they were raw or cooked, what else was in the meal, and when symptoms started. Bell peppers are included among vegetables allowed on MedlinePlus’s low-FODMAP food list, but that does not guarantee that every person will tolerate every amount or preparation.
Why do bell peppers upset my stomach?
A symptom after a meal does not prove that bell peppers caused it. The amount, the rest of the meal, sauces or other ingredients, and a digestive condition can all be relevant. The cited guidance does not establish how often sweet bell peppers cause digestive symptoms.
Start by distinguishing sweet bell peppers from hot peppers. Capsaicin, the spicy component of red peppers, has been associated with nausea, warmth, and pain in functional dyspepsia; that finding concerns spicy peppers and should not be generalized to sweet bell peppers. The British Society of Gastroenterology guideline on functional dyspepsia discusses this distinction.
Are bell peppers hard to digest, or could something else explain the symptoms?
The symptom pattern can help you decide what to track and what to discuss with a clinician, but it is not a diagnostic test.

- Bloating, gas, abdominal discomfort, or bowel changes: These can have several causes. FODMAP carbohydrates may be poorly absorbed and fermented, potentially contributing to bloating, wind, discomfort, pain, or diarrhea in some people. However, MedlinePlus’s low-FODMAP guidance includes bell peppers among foods that can be eaten on the diet; it does not support calling sweet bell peppers universally high-FODMAP or an IBS trigger.
- Heartburn or reflux: Consider the whole meal and your known triggers. NIDDK’s GERD guidance notes that spicy foods are commonly linked with symptoms for some people, while individual triggers vary. It does not identify sweet bell peppers as a trigger.
- Symptoms beyond the digestive system: A food allergy is a different concern from ordinary intolerance. Allergy can involve gut symptoms as well as symptoms elsewhere, such as a rash or swelling. The NHS food-allergy guidance explains the distinction between allergy and intolerance.
How to check whether sweet peppers are the cause
1. Keep a short food-and-symptom record
Write down the pepper amount and color, whether it was raw or cooked, the other ingredients and sauces, the symptom type, when it began, and how long it lasted. A food diary and symptom history can help when discussing a suspected food reaction with a health professional, according to the NHS.
2. Look for a repeatable pattern
Compare meals rather than relying on a single episode. Note whether symptoms follow peppers in different meals or occur only after a particular combination, portion, or sauce. Change one suspected food at a time; removing several foods together makes it harder to identify a pattern.

3. Consider a limited, single-food trial with professional guidance
If symptoms are mild and there are no signs of allergy, discuss a focused trial with a clinician or dietitian. NICE defines single-food avoidance as excluding one food thought to cause symptoms, then recommends gradual reintroduction after an agreed period, usually 2 to 4 weeks, to check whether symptoms return or worsen. This is a guideline recommendation for IBS dietary management, not a proven pepper-specific protocol. See NICE quality statement 3.
Do not use a prolonged low-FODMAP elimination diet as a casual self-test. MedlinePlus advises working with a provider or dietitian to help keep the diet balanced: Low FODMAP diet.

Does cooking bell peppers make them easier to digest?
The cited sources do not establish that cooking or peeling sweet bell peppers prevents digestive symptoms. You can record raw and cooked preparations separately to see whether your own pattern differs, but treat that as observation—not a proven remedy.

When should I get medical help?
Talk with a healthcare professional if symptoms recur, are severe, or remain unexplained rather than concluding that peppers are responsible. Seek emergency help for sudden breathing difficulty, throat or tongue swelling, or other signs of a severe reaction after eating. A stomachache accompanied by a rash can occur with anaphylaxis, according to the American College of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology.
