To stop spam emails, use your email provider’s spam and phishing controls, block repeat senders, and unsubscribe only from mailing lists you recognize. Filters are imperfect, so check Spam or Junk periodically for legitimate messages. If a message looks suspicious, don’t click its links or attachments; report it and verify any plausible request through contact details you already trust.

How do I stop spam emails?

Start by identifying what kind of message you received. A familiar retailer’s promotion is different from an unexpected message impersonating a bank, utility, or other trusted organization to get your personal or financial information. Choose an action that fits the message rather than treating every unwanted email the same way.

Action Best for What it does
Report as spam or junk Unwanted messages that reach your inbox Flags the message to your provider’s filtering system; it does not guarantee that all similar messages will be stopped.
Block Repeated messages from a particular sender or domain Targets messages from the selected address or domain. Blocking is provider-specific and does not necessarily stop the sender from sending.
Unsubscribe Promotions or newsletters from a sender you recognize and signed up for Requests removal from that sender’s mailing list.
Report as phishing Messages that impersonate someone or try to trick you into sharing information or opening something harmful Flags suspected deception to your provider; it may be separate from blocking the sender.

1. Mark inbox spam as spam or junk

Use your provider’s built-in spam or junk control on unwanted messages that reach the inbox. The Federal Trade Commission notes that filters are not perfect, so marking messages that get through can help your provider handle unwanted mail. Start with the FTC’s guide to getting less spam in your email.

2. Report suspicious messages as phishing

If a message pretends to be from a bank, delivery service, government agency, or other organization and asks you to act urgently, share sensitive information, or open an unexpected attachment, do not reply, click, or download. Use your provider’s phishing-report control, then delete the message. In Outlook, “Report phishing” does not block the sender; Microsoft says blocking requires a separate action.

3. Block repeat senders or domains

Blocking can be useful when unwanted mail repeatedly comes from the same address or domain. It is distinct from reporting a message: a spam report flags the message, while a block targets mail from the sender you selected. What happens to blocked messages varies by provider, and blocking does not prevent someone from sending mail.

4. Unsubscribe from lists you recognize

For a retailer or newsletter you know and chose to receive, use your email provider’s unsubscribe option or the sender’s legitimate unsubscribe route. Do not make a suspicious unsolicited message’s unsubscribe link your default choice. If the message may be deceptive, report it as spam or phishing instead and avoid its links and attachments. The FTC’s guidance on dealing with spam, email, and junk mail also explains how to approach unwanted messages.

5. Create a filter for persistent patterns

If unwanted mail follows a consistent pattern, such as coming from a particular address, create a filter to route or label matching messages. Filters can make recurring mail easier to manage, but they are not a guarantee that every spam message will be caught. Google explains how to use Gmail filters and manage messages incorrectly sent to Spam in its Gmail spam guidance.

6. Check Spam or Junk for legitimate mail

Filters can misclassify wanted messages. Review Spam or Junk occasionally, and use the provider’s “not spam” control if a legitimate message lands there. In Gmail, adding a trusted sender to contacts or creating a filter can help with future misclassification; Google also notes that messages from blocked senders continue to be identified as spam even if you move them out of Spam.

7. Verify unexpected requests outside the email

If an unexpected message could be genuine, contact the supposed company using a phone number, email address, or website you already know is real. Do not use the contact details or links in the message to verify it. The FTC’s phishing guidance recommends checking through a trusted route.

8. Report phishing through the right channels

Use the provider’s phishing-report control first. In the United States, the FTC also accepts reports at ReportFraud.ftc.gov; the Anti-Phishing Working Group accepts reports at reportphishing@apwg.org. These channels complement, rather than replace, your email provider’s controls.

9. Secure your account if the messages suggest someone has access

A sudden flood of unwanted subscriptions can sometimes coincide with an attempt to hide account security alerts. Search both your inbox and Spam for account notices, then use your provider’s security tools. For Gmail, Google recommends a Security Check-Up when suspicious activity may indicate account compromise.

10. Scan for malware after a risky click or download

If you opened an unexpected attachment or downloaded something from a suspicious email, stopping spam alone is not enough. Follow the FTC’s advice on scanning for malware. If you know the device is infected, take it offline while you work through malware removal.

11. Use your provider’s current instructions for its controls

Menu names and options vary across email services and can change. For exact steps, consult your provider’s current help page rather than relying on a button sequence for another service. The FTC suggests searching for your provider’s name with “how to unsubscribe from unwanted emails” when you need its specific instructions.

How do I block an email address in Gmail or Outlook?

Gmail

Use Gmail’s spam-report and blocking controls from the message you want to manage. Google’s Report spam in Gmail page covers reporting and handling messages sent to Spam. If a legitimate sender is repeatedly misclassified, mark the message “not spam,” add the sender to contacts, or create a filter. Blocking does not necessarily remove that sender’s messages from Spam.

Outlook

For a suspected scam, choose Report > Report phishing. To stop messages from a particular sender from being treated as ordinary incoming mail, add that sender to the blocked senders list separately. Microsoft’s Outlook phishing and suspicious behavior guidance explains that reporting a phishing message does not itself block future mail. A missing authentication indicator or a mismatched sender can warrant caution, but Microsoft warns that a failed authentication check does not by itself prove a message is malicious.

Why am I still getting spam after blocking someone?

Blocking targets the address or domain you selected; it does not stop the sender from sending, and it may not cover other addresses used for similar messages. The provider may route blocked mail to Spam rather than prevent it from arriving at all. For messages that still reach your inbox, report them as spam; use a filter for persistent patterns, and report suspected impersonation as phishing.

How do I unsubscribe from unwanted emails safely?

Unsubscribe when you recognize the organization and remember signing up for its marketing or newsletter. Use your provider’s unsubscribe control when available, or go through the sender’s known, legitimate website. Avoid clicking an unsubscribe link in a message that is unsolicited and suspicious; report the message instead.

In the United States, the FTC’s CAN-SPAM compliance guide says commercial senders must provide a clear opt-out and honor requests within 10 business days. That is a legal requirement for covered commercial senders, not a guarantee that every unwanted or fraudulent message is legitimate or covered by the law.

How do I report a phishing email?

  1. Do not reply, follow links, or open unexpected attachments.
  2. Use the provider’s report-phishing control. In Outlook, select Report > Report phishing; in Gmail, use the message’s spam or phishing reporting control.
  3. If the message claims to be from a company or agency and you need to check whether the request is real, contact it using a phone number, address, or website you already trust.
  4. In the United States, you can also report suspected fraud at ReportFraud.ftc.gov or send phishing email to reportphishing@apwg.org.
  5. Delete the message after reporting it.

What if I clicked a spam email link or attachment?

If you entered a password or financial details, contact the affected provider or financial institution through a trusted channel and use its account-security process. If you downloaded a file or suspect malware, scan the device and follow malware-removal steps. The FTC advises taking a known infected device offline while removing malware. If account activity seems suspicious, check for security alerts that may have been buried in Spam and use the provider’s account security tools.
