Pixel Buds do not have a documented feature that pauses audio simply because you fall asleep. First check In-ear detection, which pauses playback when the buds detect they have been removed. If you use a supported Pixel Watch, its Bedtime mode can also pause media. The right fix depends on whether playback pauses cleanly, stops when you speak, or cuts out.
Identify what is triggering the pause
| What you notice | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Playback pauses after an earbud shifts or comes out | In-ear detection | Turn off In-ear detection in Pixel Buds settings. Google says it pauses the current audio when the buds detect removal. Google Pixel Buds Help |
| Playback pauses when Pixel Watch Bedtime mode starts | Watch Bedtime mode | End Bedtime mode or use one of the manual exits below. Google Pixel Buds Help |
| Playback pauses when you talk | Conversation Detection on Pixel Buds Pro series | Review Conversation Detection in Pixel Buds settings. Google Pixel Buds Help |
| Audio stutters, skips, or cuts out instead of pausing cleanly | Playback, internet, or Bluetooth connection trouble | Follow Google’s playback troubleshooting steps. Google Pixel Buds Help |
Google’s documentation describes these triggers; it does not establish that sleep or stillness alone makes Pixel Buds pause.
Turn off In-ear detection
In-ear detection is enabled automatically when Pixel Buds are paired with an Android 6.0 or later device with Fast Pair enabled. It pauses media when the buds detect removal and resumes playback when they are put back in. Google says the setting stays enabled for connected host devices until you change it.
- On a Pixel phone with Android 10 or later: Open Settings → Connected Devices → tap the settings icon beside your paired Pixel Buds.
- On another Android phone: Open the Google Pixel Buds app and go to the connected buds’ settings.
- Find In-ear detection. On Pixel Buds A-Series and Pixel Buds (2020), it appears in the main settings list. On Pixel Buds Pro, Pro 2, and 2a, open More settings and toggle In-ear detection.
Turning this feature off prevents the automatic pause-and-resume behavior tied to removal detection. Google says that with the feature off, triple-tapping the right earbud manually puts the earbuds to sleep or wakes them.

Check Pixel Watch Bedtime mode
If you use a Pixel Watch that supports auto Bedtime mode, check whether the mode starts when playback pauses. When the buds detect the watch is in Bedtime mode, they automatically pause currently playing media and disable touch controls and “Hey Google” hotword detection. The buds normally exit this state when the watch’s Bedtime mode ends.
- Let the watch’s Bedtime mode end.
- Put the earbuds in their charging case, or answer a phone call, to exit the mode manually.
- If the buds remain in sleep after a phone reboot, unlock the phone or put the buds in their case.
- With multipoint, media playing on a secondary device may not pause automatically; pause it on that device.
Check Conversation Detection if pauses happen when you speak
On Pixel Buds Pro series, Conversation Detection can pause media when it detects speech and resume playback after the conversation ends. If pauses coincide with talking, review this setting in Pixel Buds settings. Google’s help page describes the feature but does not provide a complete current toggle path, so the exact menu labels may vary.

Troubleshoot skipping or choppy audio
If the sound stutters, skips, or cuts out rather than pausing cleanly, treat it as a playback or connection issue—not proof that a sleep-related feature is active. Google recommends these steps:
