First check your account activity and ask the recipient whether the check arrived or was deposited. If it remains unpaid, get the bank’s instructions and confirmation before arranging a replacement.
What to do first
- Check whether the check has cleared. Review your account activity and contact the recipient to ask whether the check arrived or was deposited. A delay alone does not establish that it is lost.
- Call the bank or credit union that holds the account. The CFPB advises consumers to contact their institution right away to stop a check: CFPB: How do I stop payment on a check?
- Ask what information is needed and whether the order can still take effect. Be ready to provide details that identify the check, such as its number, amount, date, and payee, but follow the institution’s instructions about which details it requires. A stop request may be ineffective if the bank does not have enough time to act before processing.
- Confirm the order and its terms. Ask whether it was accepted, when it takes effect, what it costs, how long it lasts, and whether an oral request must be confirmed in writing. Find out how to renew it if needed and keep the confirmation.
- Coordinate a replacement with the recipient. Once the original is addressed, ask whether the recipient will accept a replacement check or another payment method. Do not send a replacement without coordinating, since the original might still arrive or be presented.
What a stop-payment order does—and what to confirm
A stop-payment order asks the account-holding institution not to pay a specific check. Procedures, fees, and order terms vary by institution and account. The CFPB says that, under most state laws, a written order made before processing is complete commonly prevents payment for six months; in some cases, an order expires after one year. These are not universal guarantees, so confirm the actual expiration date and renewal options with your bank or credit union: CFPB guidance on stopping payment.
Do not assume an order lasts indefinitely. The institution’s current requirements control your account, including whether you must put a request in writing and how long the order remains active. Continue checking account activity while the order is in force. After it expires, the institution may pay the check if it is presented.
When and how to replace the check
If the recipient confirms the check was lost, arrange the replacement only after asking your financial institution about stopping the original. The CFPB says that when a merchant loses a check, the writer can stop payment and then write a new one: CFPB: I wrote a check to a merchant or store, and they lost it. Do I have to pay?

Ask the recipient which replacement method it accepts and whether it will reimburse any stop-payment fee. The recipient may be asked to cover that fee, but agree on this directly rather than assuming reimbursement.
If the check has already cleared or may have been stolen
If the check has posted despite a stop request, or someone may have stolen and cashed it, contact the financial institution promptly and ask how to dispute the transaction and whether it can restore the money. The CFPB explains that protections can depend on whether the payment was processed electronically; rights involving a paper check may depend on state law.
