First check which OBS counter is rising. Network dropped frames usually point to an unstable connection to YouTube or a bitrate your upload connection cannot sustain; they do not, by themselves, mean your Windows mini PC is too weak. Rendering lag or encoding lag instead indicates a local workload problem. Fix the branch that matches the symptom before changing hardware.
Identify which OBS problem you have
Open OBS while streaming or reviewing the affected session and check its Stats window and log. OBS distinguishes network dropped frames from rendering and encoding lag; these counters describe different problems and need different fixes. Save the log for the affected session so you can compare it with a representative test.
- Network dropped frames: OBS cannot reliably send data to the streaming service at the configured bitrate. OBS drops frames to compensate for an unstable or insufficient connection, and a large number can disconnect the stream. OBS Project says it is “extremely unlikely” that OBS Studio itself causes dropped frames. Read OBS’s connection troubleshooting guide.
- Rendering lag: OBS is struggling to composite the scene on the GPU quickly enough.
- Encoding lag: the video encoding workload is not being completed quickly enough. Check GPU and encoder load rather than applying network fixes.
A mini PC can have either kind of issue, or both. The counters, OBS log, and YouTube’s stream-health messages are more useful than assuming the computer is underpowered.
Fix network dropped frames first
1. Test a sustainable bitrate, not a speed-test peak
Run a test stream under conditions similar to your planned broadcast: include representative audio and movement, and monitor YouTube’s stream health. A brief upload-speed peak does not establish that the connection can sustain that rate throughout a stream.

OBS suggests starting the video bitrate at about 75% of total upload speed. This is a rule of thumb from its connection guide, not a guarantee for a fluctuating connection. Reduce the bitrate if the stream still drops frames, then test again. YouTube likewise advises choosing a quality the connection can reliably deliver.
For H.264, YouTube’s current guidance lists these recommended ranges:

These are YouTube recommendations, not a promise that your ISP or network can sustain the chosen rate. If your stable upload cannot support the range for your chosen output, lower the bitrate and, if needed, lower resolution or frame rate to make a reliable stream possible. 2. Compare Ethernet with Wi-Fi
If the mini PC is on Wi-Fi, test over wired Ethernet while keeping the OBS settings and stream content otherwise similar. OBS recommends a wired connection because Wi-Fi can be unstable for streaming. A Cat6 cable is relevant only if you need an Ethernet cable to run this test or connect the mini PC; it will not fix ISP congestion, a router fault, or an unsuitable bitrate.

- In OBS, open Settings → Advanced → Network.
- Enable Network Optimizations and TCP pacing, then test the stream again.
- Leave Bind to IP set to Default.
- If drops continue, try IPv4 Only as a diagnostic. If it does not help, restore the default IPv4 and IPv6 choice.
Change one option at a time where practical, so you can tell whether it affected the problem. These are Windows-specific OBS settings documented in the OBS connection guide.
4. Check software that can interfere with networking
Temporarily test whether a VPN or network-prioritization utility is involved. OBS identifies bundled network tools such as Lenovo Vantage Network Boost and Killer NIC software as possible sources of connection trouble. Also check that the network adapter driver is current.

Firewall or antivirus software can also interfere. Use only a brief, targeted test if needed; do not leave security protection disabled. If the test confirms interference, add an OBS exception as appropriate and re-enable the security software. OBS’s guide lists VPNs, security software, network utilities, and outdated drivers among possible causes.
5. Inspect the rest of the network path
Restart the modem or router if appropriate, and check the Ethernet cable, network adapter, router, switches, and extenders for loose connections or faults. If the drops persist after these checks, contact your ISP with the affected times, OBS log, and YouTube stream-health details. That information can help distinguish a local problem from an issue on the connection beyond your home.
6. Use dynamic bitrate only as a continuity fallback
OBS offers Dynamically change bitrate to manage congestion (Beta). It can lower bitrate during congestion and may reduce frame loss, but OBS explicitly cautions that this does not fix the underlying connection problem. The stream’s video quality can drop as the bitrate changes. Use it when keeping the stream running matters more than maintaining fixed quality, not as a substitute for diagnosis.

If rendering or encoding lag is rising
Do not treat these symptoms as network dropped frames. When the local GPU or encoder cannot keep up, reduce OBS’s workload and test again:
- Lower the output resolution or frame rate. If 60 fps is not working, try 30 fps.
- Simplify scenes and remove or limit costly sources.
- Reduce filters and browser sources, which can add rendering work.
- Check whether other programs are using the GPU and close unnecessary workloads.
OBS’s encoding-performance guide explains that GPU saturation can leave OBS without enough time to composite scenes. These steps address local rendering or encoding strain; they are not a fix for an unstable connection.

For YouTube RTMP or RTMPS broadcasts, the current YouTube guidance lists CBR, H.264, H.265, or AV1 video, and up to 60 fps. YouTube recommends RTMPS and a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds. Set OBS’s output to match the quality your connection can reliably sustain, not simply the highest available setting. The codec and keyframe recommendations do not compensate for unstable upload capacity.

Before an important live event, test with audio and motion similar to the real stream and watch YouTube’s stream-health status. This can reveal connection and quality problems that a quiet or very short test may not expose. Details and codec-specific recommendations are in YouTube’s encoder settings guidance.
When to consider hardware—and when not to
Do not buy a faster mini PC, graphics card, router, or capture card solely because the network dropped-frames counter rises. That counter points first to the connection between OBS and YouTube or to a bitrate the connection cannot sustain. If rendering or encoding lag continues after reducing output demands and simplifying scenes, then investigate the mini PC’s GPU and encoder capacity using the OBS log and performance counters before deciding whether hardware is the constraint.
