Turn on Do Not Disturb from Control Center to quiet notification alerts while you listen. If you want some alerts to get through, customize a Focus; if Siri is speaking notifications through your headphones, change its announcement settings separately.
Silence alerts for a listening session
- Open Control Center. On iPhones that use the newer gesture, swipe down from the top-right corner; the gesture can vary by model.
- Tap Focus, then tap Do Not Disturb to turn it on. Apple says Focus can temporarily silence notifications or allow selected ones (Apple Support: Allow or silence notifications for a Focus on iPhone; How to turn Do Not Disturb on or off on your iPhone).
Turn Do Not Disturb off from the Focus control when you want alerts to resume. Focus delays notification delivery to prevent interruptions, as Apple explains in Change notification settings on iPhone.
Allow selected people or apps through
If you want quiet for music but still need certain alerts, use a tailored Focus instead of silencing everything.
- Open Settings > Focus.
- Select an existing Focus or create a custom one.
- Under People and Apps, choose what to allow or silence.
- Review the option for time-sensitive notifications if you need those alerts to arrive immediately.

Silence one app instead of using Focus
For an app you never want to hear from, turn off its notifications rather than changing your listening routine.
- Open Settings > Notifications.
- Tap the app that is interrupting your music.
- Turn off Allow Notifications.
You can also adjust an app’s alert locations and sounds where those controls are available. This is a persistent app-level change; to receive its alerts again, return to the same screen and enable notifications. Apple describes these controls in Change notification settings on iPhone.

If the interruption is Siri speaking
Siri can announce notifications from apps through supported headphones, which is different from an ordinary notification chime or banner. Check Settings > Notifications > Announce Notifications and review the relevant app settings. For supported AirPods, Apple’s guidance includes a Headphones Only option if you want announcements limited to times when headphones are worn. Settings depend on the headphones and software: Use Siri with AirPods.
Why Silent mode may not solve it
Silent mode is not a universal mute for audio. Apple says audio apps such as Music can continue playing in Silent mode. Do Not Disturb is the more relevant control for silencing ringtones and text tones for calls, messages, and notifications. See Silence iPhone.

- Open Settings > Focus > Do Not Disturb > Set a Schedule and check for a schedule that is enabling it automatically.
- If Focus is shared across Apple devices, check whether Share Across Devices is enabled; another device’s Focus behavior may be relevant.
