To stop HDMI-CEC from taking over your TV or powering connected devices unexpectedly, first turn off the source device’s specific input-switching or auto-power option. If that does not help, disable HDMI-CEC on the TV or the device sending the command. The setting may have a brand name, and its exact location varies by model and software.
Start with the device causing the change
If your TV changes inputs or turns on when you start a streaming player, game console, disc player, or receiver, check that device’s HDMI-CEC settings as well as the TV’s. CEC controls can be available at both ends of the HDMI connection. Disable the control on the device that appears to trigger the behavior before switching off CEC everywhere.
Look in the TV settings for the manufacturer’s name for HDMI-CEC:
- Samsung: Anynet+ (HDMI-CEC)
- LG: SIMPLINK (HDMI-CEC)
- Sony: BRAVIA Sync, BRAVIA Link, or CONTROL for HDMI
- Panasonic: VIERA Link, HDAVI Control, or EZ Sync
- Philips: EasyLink
Roku’s setup guide lists these common names, but menus and labels vary by model and software: Roku HDMI-CEC setup guide.

Stop a Roku player from taking over the TV input
On a Roku player, turn off 1-Touch Play first. Roku recommends this for unwanted input switching. If the TV still switches inputs, Roku’s troubleshooting advises turning off CEC in the TV settings. See Roku’s HDMI-CEC instructions and its support answer for why a TV switches to a Roku device.
Stop a Sony TV from automatically switching inputs
Sony identifies BRAVIA Sync as its HDMI-CEC feature and says turning it off stops the TV from automatically switching to the last input used by a connected HDMI-CEC device. Sony also documents a separate TV Auto Power On option, so check for a control that matches the unwanted behavior before disabling all linked features. See Sony’s BRAVIA Sync support page.

Stop connected Philips devices from powering down with the TV
Philips manuals include an EasyLink auto device off setting that can be disabled. The available options depend on the TV model; consult the manual for your model rather than assuming every EasyLink menu is identical. Philips documentation is available through its support page for the 7800-series example.
Disable HDMI-CEC more broadly if needed
If the targeted setting does not solve the problem, turn off HDMI-CEC on the TV or on the connected source that is sending the command. Search the settings menu for “HDMI-CEC” or the brand name listed above. Disabling CEC broadly can also remove linked-control features you may rely on, such as device control or coordinated power behavior; which functions remain after changing an individual setting depends on the equipment and configuration.

Check the connection if the problem continues
For Roku-related input switching that persists after changing CEC settings, Roku recommends these additional troubleshooting steps:
- Check that the HDMI connections are secure.
- Restart the Roku player and TV.
- If the player connects through an AV receiver, connect it directly to the TV to see whether the receiver path is involved.
- Check whether a TV firmware update is available.
These steps come from Roku’s player-specific guidance; they are not a guaranteed fix for every brand or setup. See Roku’s input-switching troubleshooting.

Keep ARC or eARC separate from the CEC fix
ARC and eARC carry TV audio over HDMI; CEC carries device-control commands. Some manufacturers’ setup instructions connect the options or place them near each other in menus, but ARC does not automatically need to be disabled to stop input switching. Roku’s setup guide treats HDMI-CEC and ARC as distinct options while noting some brand-specific coupling. Check your TV’s audio and control settings before changing ARC or eARC, especially if you use a soundbar or receiver.
