To restart a scheduled YouTube live stream after a temporary interruption, restore the encoder’s output using the stream URL and key assigned to that event, then follow the prompt in Live Control Room. For a scheduled encoder stream, YouTube’s workflow is to wait for the preview and click Go live. Do not click End Stream unless the broadcast is truly over: YouTube’s public guidance does not guarantee that an event explicitly ended can be reopened on the same event page.
Restart the encoder without ending the YouTube event
- In YouTube Studio, open Create → Go live, choose Manage, and select the scheduled stream.
- In your encoder, select the stream URL and stream key associated with that scheduled event. A stream key connects the encoder to YouTube; if you reset the key, replace the saved key in the encoder.
- Start or restart the encoder’s output. In Live Control Room, wait for the feed preview. For a scheduled stream, click Go live when the controls prompt you to do so.
- Check the watch page and confirm that viewers can see the video and hear its audio. If the feed is still absent, use the troubleshooting checks below rather than ending the event as a first step.
YouTube distinguishes the encoder sending content from the Live Control Room action that ends a broadcast. Stopping or restarting encoder output is not described as equivalent to clicking End Stream. If you mean to resume after a temporary interruption, avoid that button until you are finished.
When and how to stop the broadcast
Temporary pause or encoder failure
Restore the encoder feed and confirm that YouTube receives it. Check the event’s Auto-start and Auto-stop settings before relying on the encoder alone to start or stop the broadcast; these settings affect the workflow.

Broadcast finished for good
For the scheduled-stream workflow, YouTube instructs creators to click End Stream and stop sending content from the encoder. Its general encoder tips say to stop the encoder after the event has stopped on YouTube. Keep that order in mind when the broadcast is actually over.

If you already clicked End Stream
YouTube’s public help does not clearly say whether an event explicitly ended in Live Control Room can be reopened on the same event page. Check its status under YouTube Studio’s Live tab and in Live Control Room. If it is complete and you need another broadcast, create or schedule a new stream and share the appropriate link; do not assume the old event can be restarted.
Check the event’s start and stop settings
YouTube says that when Auto-start and Auto-stop are enabled, a creator can start or stop streaming from the encoder. Those settings may be copied when stream settings are reused. Check the scheduled stream’s actual toggles rather than assuming that every event behaves the same way. YouTube’s public help does not spell out reconnect behavior for every combination of settings.

Fix an encoder that will not reconnect
- Confirm the event: In Live Control Room, make sure you selected the intended scheduled stream and are using its associated stream URL and key.
- Check the key: Retrieve the event’s key in Live Control Room. If the key was reset, update the encoder’s saved key before trying again.
- Check the connection type: YouTube supports RTMPS as an encrypted option. If your encoder supports it, use the RTMPS URL shown in Live Control Room; do not substitute a different event’s URL.
- Wait for preview: Once the encoder is sending, allow Live Control Room to show the feed before clicking Go live for a scheduled stream.
YouTube recommends setting up an encoder at least 2 hours before an event and starting it at least 15 minutes before the scheduled start. These are YouTube’s preparation recommendations, not guarantees that a particular connection will work.
Protect recordings of a 24/7 stream
YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours may be automatically archived; a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. That is platform guidance, not a guarantee that every shorter stream will produce a complete replay. If the recording matters, make a local recording, verify that the file exists, and check that it continues to grow while you stream. Confirm that you have enough storage before relying on a long-running local backup.
