Go to Settings > General > Software Update > Automatic Updates and turn off Automatically Download. Apple says this option may appear only after you turn off Automatically Install. You can still check for and install an update manually whenever you choose.
Turn off automatic iOS downloads
- Open Settings on your iPhone.
- Tap General, then Software Update.
- Tap Automatic Updates.
- If needed, turn off Automatically Install to reveal the download control. Then turn off Automatically Download. Apple documents downloading and installing as separate settings, so disabling installation alone does not necessarily stop an update from downloading. Apple’s instructions for downloading iOS 27 describe automatic downloads over Wi-Fi while the iPhone is charging and locked; these are the conditions Apple describes, not a guarantee of when every device will download.
Install an update manually later
When you are ready to update, open Settings > General > Software Update, check for an available version, and choose the download or install action shown on your iPhone. Apple also documents updating an iPhone using a computer. See Apple’s iPhone and iPad update instructions.
Do you need to turn off System Files updates?
No—not to stop automatic downloads of a full iOS version update. Apple provides a separate System Files control, so you can manage those updates independently. The iPhone user guide explains the distinction in its instructions for updating iOS on iPhone.
What changes when automatic downloading is off?
Your iPhone will not automatically download iOS updates through that setting, so you will need to check Software Update yourself when you want a new version. Apple recommends keeping software current for new features, security updates, and bug fixes. In Apple Support’s iOS 27 download guidance, it says: “The best way to make sure your device receives all of the features, security updates and bug fixes in our latest software releases is to turn on automatic updates when you first set up your device.”
